Toyota 0W20 vs. Mobile 1 0W20 Observation

I don't think running Mobil 1 is going to cause premature engine failure but If there's an oil that suits our vehicles better then why not? If the price point is roughly the same, then why not? There's lots of evidence regarding the additives in Toyota's synthetic. Unfortunately, I have too many cases of Mobil 1 to get through before I can try OEM oil.

Do what makes you happy.

LOL, my bad, I guess I'm an "OCD shamer." I know they can't help it, any more than I can help some of my own personality quirks. I guess I just feel like if even one person's extreme oil anxiety is relieved a little bit by my introducing an element of rationality, then it's worth the effort.

OCD is what makes the world a better place and evolve. Funny because if it weren't for the Obsessive Compulsive Dedication of the Japanese people, Toyota would not have such reliability at it does. OCD = perfection and evolution. You can thank someone's OCD for all this tech and lifestyle we have today. Yes I will do what makes me happy and strive for the closest thing to perfection.

Costco offers Case or 6 quarts of Mobil1 for $26 when on sale ($10 off). I don't think Toyota OEM can touch that. As for quality, I can't imagine that there is much difference these days. Someone mentioned Amsoil and from personal experience those guys are notoriously difficult to deal with and you can't just go to the local Oriley's to pick a quart of Amsoil, also God forbid you want to sell that extra quart of transmission fluid on E-bay - they will give you all kinds of crap,the worst company I ever dealt with.

I have been using the Mobile 1 0W20 for oil changes due to its availability and cost. During my most recent oil change @ 38,289 I decided to go back to the the Toyota 0W20 oil. Once I started the engine after changing the oil I immediately noticed a much quieter engine (much less valve train noise). Has anyone tried or noticed the same? I sent that last batch of used Mobile 1 0W20 to Blackstone for a report and will do the same once the same number of miles is put on the Toyota 0W20 to see if there are any substantial differences.

Does everyone not just let the dealer do the service?

I drive a T4R because I know I don't have to worry about minutia like manufacturer differences in same viscosity oil.

I've driven vehicles (ex. 2001 Dodge Ram w/Cummins) that required this kind of attention. Get lazy and run Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel fuel? That's a $2000 fuel pump job.

Agree noticed the difference also, it's really weird because I thought it was just in my head but it actually felt smoother quieter and better to me. I wasn't brave enough to start a thread for fear of the "oil's are the same you idiot "beat down LOL

My '05 has never been dealer serviced and runs like a swiss watch. I have no plans to bring my '17 to the dealer for service either....if anybody wants my free oil changes, let me know! It's not that I don't trust the dealers, I just enjoy doing my own maintenence and feel my trucks get more personalized (better) service when I'm doing the wrenching.

As long as your 4Runner is under warranty I'd suggest the OCI of 10,000 miles as suggested by Toyota, never want to give them an out on your warranty. Also "Annual or 20,000 miles" thus if you only drive 15,000 each year the new oil is unnecessary. Save $25 and go with Mobil 1 Extended Performance or 15,000 miles.

In my and others opinions the oil could be good/great, quieter etc but the filter may not be adequate. On my 2006 4Runner I was using Mobil 1 EP for 12,000 miles OCI but changing the filter mid way or 6,000 miles but changing the filter on the Gen 4 was a dream. I used the K&N Performance Gold filter which was the same as the TRD oil filter. I have yet to change my 2016's oil but I will change the oil at 5,000 (try to get out some of the breaking extras), then again at 10,000 miles then start the 10,000 OCI with a 5,000 filter change. I assume the new filter cartridge will allow me to change the filter mid way. I have ordered a few TRD oil filters. BTW, did Toyota change to Royal Purple to make their TRD oil filters? I need to search that.

Lastly, I have found the Gen 5 forum to be a little more lacking in mechanical chatter like oil, best filters in comparison to the Gen 4. There is fun had to banter on oil, filters etc. I know there is the Bob the Oil forum but you are sometimes talking to Jeeps & Nissan etc guys/gals and I like the 4Runners guys/gals.

I did M1 0-20 Toyota blend at 5k miles and will let the dealer do the change at 10k, so I will post back if I notice any differences in engine noise, etc.

The first time I bought Amsoil I picked it up at a local parts shop, after they closed down I ran into a small issue sourcing a dealer. But a quick Google search fixed that.

After that I just ordered their stuff off their website with no issues. So I can't say I've ever had any huge issues sourcing their product compared to anyone else.

For what it's worth, I've changed the oil & filter (just regular 5W-30) in my 1999 Gen 3 T4R many times. Each time it seems that the engine runs much quieter after the oil change, even if I used the same brand and weight of oil.

I can think of two reasons for this: 1) the newness and cleanliness of the new oil; 2) before I change the oil, the dip stick show 0.5 to 1 quart low, the new oil is always topped off to full.

I don’t know how you managed this. I called them and asked, they basically acted like I was crazy and were a little rude even though I was perfectly calm & polite and told them this wasn’t a service I never planned on using. Then they asked if I would take a survey, I said “yes” they hung up on me.

I don't know what sort of "contract" the other guy signed but it goes to show you should read before you sign anything.

My bill of sale is simply vehicle cost, minor fees, taxes and registration.

However there is Toyota Care but it is FREE so you won't get any refund.

Toyota Care is a no cost maintenance plan that comes with the lease or purchase of every new Toyota car, truck or SUV for 2-years or 25,000 miles (whichever comes first). This includes oil changes, tire rotations, fluid level adjustments, multi-point vehicle inspections

It is not worth much more than the price of admission, either (ie, free). 2 free oil changes at 10k and 20k, and 5 free tire rotations every 5k. I used my oil changes at 5k and 10k. Just went in for my freebie 15k "service" (tire rotation) with 15.4k on the clock and was informed, "I'm sorry, that expired due to mileage. We'll have to use your final 25k service." I was dumbfounded. What a shortsighted business model, to give folks the rub over something so trivial, but so not worth arguing over either... it is more inconvenient to wait at the dealer than just rotate them in the garage anyway.
