This post is intended to clarify the ECU reset process for 4th generation 4Runners (2003 – 2009) based on my recent experience after my last key was stolen last week.
My local dealer initially told me (incorrectly!) that I would need to have my ECU computer replaced in order to make a new set of master keys. The quote to do this work was over $650!
After making a few calls and doing some research on the internet I found the attached Toyota Service Bulletin (SS003-02) outlining the ECU reset procedure for 2003-2009 4Runners. I called the dealer back and after much chin scratching they finally agreed that they could in fact reset my ECU. The cost to reset and cut two new master keys was $260. Still not cheap but far better than the original amount they quoted me. Unfortunately I still had to have my vehicle towed to the dealer which cost me another $125.
For some reason none of the locksmiths in my region were capable of resetting the ECU for me but I did find several locksmiths in other states that claim they do it all the time. So you might be able to locate a locksmith in your area that can travel to you to do the reset and save you the towing fee. The going rate for mobile locksmiths to reset the ECU and cut new keys was about $275.
Hopefully this info will help others avoid the G&A I experienced with this ordeal.
