Yes it is true, Toyota is cutting back quite a bit of it's production, but as for the jobs they are only cutting temporary positions. So in the terms of laying anybody off, thats not happening.

Thats good they are not laying off. Like I said I caught a blurb running out the door and did not know exactly what the deal was. Figured you guys would update me:D

I guess with all the other auto companies going south, it is probably bring Toyota with it a little bit. IMO I think if the US government is going to bailout GM, Ford, and Chrysler their CEOs and top execs should get a drastic pay decrease. Now our tax dollars are going to pay their massive salaries. You know they are going to take some of that money, something has to pay for the gardeners, pool boys, and maids.

I agree, the CEO of Toyota gets 1 million a year which is many times less than most in the third level of management in the USA car makers. Restructure this mess and the enormous amount of money going to workers that no longer work and you will not need a bailout.

it is time to let chrysler pass on or get bought by another company.

i can see saving GM, but chrysler is a total wreck.

Yep

Agreed, the lack of quality in their vehicles (especially over the past 10 years or so) is nothing short of pathetic.

Personally, I say let GM and/or Chrysler file for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy reorganization if that is what it takes.
If the government wants to give any company money it should be the suppliers the automakers owe 10-15 BILLION dollars to (according to a report I read).
The parts suppliers employ roughly TWICE as many people in the USA as the automakers.
If the parts suppliers fail, Toyota, Honda and all the other foreign automakers building vehicles in the USA will face parts shortages.

Given the fact that 4Runner sales have literally dropped off a cliff this year (44K vs 80K YTD, 08 vs 07),
one has to wonder if Toyota will delay or speed up the introduction of the next generation model.
Also have to wonder if Toyota might be thinking about assembling the 4Runner at their Texas plant since it is being so under utilized.

Time will Tell I Suppose.

Chrysler is doing a full shut down on all their plants. No one is expected to return to work sooner than Jan 19, 2009.

Well, I can reassure you times are tuff! They are not shutting us down for the whole month of Jan., but we are not running any production for the week of the 5th-9th, plus no production on the 16th, 19th, 23rd, and the 30th (that is just for what we call the Eastside of the plant, Sienna production). The kicker is that when we do return in Jan. and we are running production, we will only be running for half a shift.

I doubt it, they are actually better of than we are (TMMI). At our plant they are only running about 60 Sequoias a shift (not quite 4 hours of really ssslllooowww production), and we are going to 111 Siennas a shift (when at one time we were pumping out about 400 a shift) in Jan., plus we are no longer producing the Tundra (incase you didn't know we only run 2 shifts). Later this year we are going to be running the Highlander, but hell their sale are tanking as well. Who knows??? I guess as long as they keep paying me, I'll clean toilets if they ask me. :D :happens: :biggrin2:

An example of the downfall of chrysler was oversaturating the brand with too many of the same type of vechicles like what was the deal with offering the Patriot and Compass along with the Liberty which basically were all the same vehicle;I guess they wanted to see if one of them stuck with the public instead of doing better market research.

I understand the economic ramifications of the big 3 failing but they made their beds so they need to sleep in them and I really don't care if they fail.

Is it for sure that your plant will produce the Highlander? I thought that it was being produced in Japan and would continue to be produced there...Interesting...

Bailout, or Bankruptcy... THEN WHAT???

So, the bailout is in the works, GMAC is getting the holdings company status and will be able to dip into the bailout fund for banks. Chrysler is getting some of the money too. Ford says they have a little bit of cash in the bank and do not need the the tax-payers money YET.

The Chief Everything Officers will take a significant pay cut, the unionized workers will take a cut as well and will have the union contracts re-drawn (or, hopefully, eliminated)

Or the Big 3 will file for bankruptcy protection, restructure, tell all their creditors to "go and scratch it" in the process, lay off workers, etc...

But WHAT IS NEXT??? In either case...

I do not think that as a result of a bail out or banruptcy the Big 3 will start producing world class vehicles... It takes YEARS of R & D and engeneering... And they do not have the time not the talent for that.

In Korea and Japan, the governments know that certain industries, such as auto, are backbones of their economy. They are heavily protected (from competition) and make the positions for working for Toyota, Samsung, Mitsubishi, etc so attractive that only the best of the best from the top engineering schools are picked. Over here, in the good ole USA, we don't even graduate a fraction of scientists and engineers that will be needed to be competitive in this global market. We continue to lose the few top talent that we do have to foreign competitors who snap them up over to work in Dubai, Abu-Dhabi, Singapore, Hong Kong, India, Russia, etc. Our immigration policies have turned away very smart people from even trying to enter the US; so they have takeh jobs in other countries - anywhere but here.

I think there is no quick and easy solution to this problem and we are on for a looooooong ride down...

Yes you are correct, they do produce the Highlander in Japan, but before the auto industry went to the pot, they could not keep up with the demand (all of the Japanese plants were extremely over burdened work wise.) They have been doing the retooling in the weld shop for a couple of weeks to a month now, so I would assume we are still going to be building them. We are still hoping they actually decide to run it in the East Assembly shop with the Sienna and then announce another vehicle to run in the West plant with the Sequoia.
