Toyota emblem on back hatch

Does this emblem come out of the chrome piece that's above the tail light? I'd like to paint my emblems white and would prefer to do it with them removed from the vehicle. If it matters it's an 05 sr5.

It Does BUT it wont go back in. Theres 2 prongs and adhesive. I painted the trim black and the emblem orange. I had to use black silicone to put the Emblem back on. Im sure glue would work as well.

How did you remove it? Do you have to remove the inner panel?

What do you recommend? I want to paint the emblem white and leave the rest chrome. If I can pry it out with a flat head or something without breaking it I will do that. It seems to me the safest way would be remove that whole piece then pop the emblem out from the back. If I want to remove the whole piece do I need to go through the back of the hatch? I hope I'm making sense...

If you just want to paint the emblem leave that trim piece on. Its a HUUGE PITA to remove. Get a blow dryer and some fishing line. Heat up the emblem and get the line behind it and work your way down. You will hit a snag about half way. Those are the centering pegs. When you hit that start from the bottom and work your way up. Use a slow sawing motion and keep the glue nice and warm and it should pop right off. When you get it off the goo will not work anymore. So rub all the goo off and sand the emblem down with like 400-600 grit. Prime and paint. when its fully dry I recommend clear silicone to reapply. Put a lil around the whole emblem and press back into place. Have some q-tips and paper towls ready to wipe off the excess. Dont worry about centering thats what the pegs are for.

I used a heat gun and softened the badge up as was previously stated. I've heard of the fishing line technique, but I used Popsicle sticks to pry around the edge until it finally popped off.
I used some automotive grade body panel tape to stick the badge back on after painting.
The whole job is really pretty easy. Post some pictures when you're done!

i used the 3m double sided body panel tape. i put the strips of tape to completely cover the whole back of the emblem, and used a razor to cut out the open spaces of the emblem....time consuming, but worth it.
