Toyota issues "fix" for axle wrap / driveshaft clunky-thumpy

I have just started to notice our 4Runner doing this occasionally. Mostly after a hard brake and just starting to let the pressure off the brakes. I am taking it into Toyota tomorrow to have them look at it. I printed off the TSB for this to show the technician. Our 4Runner only has 1,400 miles on it. Thanks for the TSB and the info guys.

I notice issue when i am accelerating towards green light and it turns red. With a firm push on the brakes and not releasing, i hear a thump and i see the 4x4 knob move slightly back. Is that the same issue?

Care to elaborate on the tire rotation mishap? Was it dealer installed?

I have had the "THUMP" since about 3500 Miles and I stupidly thought it was just tension built up in the brakes, and the pads releasing, The thing is I get it sometimes under soft braking as well. The dealer will have my truck in a week having the rims powder coated due to a mishap during a tire rotation, so I will hopefully have them replace the prop shaft while it is on the lift. "they are probably going to hate me after this visit" but hey it's an expensive truck and should be 100% at 15,000 miles. Does anyone have a definite way to get the axle to thump? I want to be sure the tech feels and hears it? Thank forum-

Yeah the Stealership did not remove my dust caps when they did the routine 15,000 service tire rotation, in doing so the technician had to angle the air-wrench so heavily that he melted all four dust caps and scared all four rims. It was not an easy road but they eventually agreed to powder coat the rims satin black (as I would have had done anyway) but otherwise I would have asked for new rims. They tried real hard for the "we have a guy" but I insisted and I feel that they have done right by it now. :thumb3: yeah black TE rims in two weeks!

Amazing.
After they scratched the caps during my first service experience, I now remove them before I take it in. Actually, I like the no cap look so I'm keeping it. Please post pics of the powdercoated rims, I want to tool dip mine when I have time.

Update: Just got a call from the dealership, and they are going to order a new drive line. The service adviser said that this is a quite common issue with certain Toyota's. He said this occurs because as the nose dives (hard brake) and the back end rises, the drive line and the slip yoke become misaligned and when the vehicle returns to a level position (once stopped), the yoke slips back into its original position, and that is what produces this "clunk/thunk" or "bump from behind" sensation.

Hopefully, the new drive line will fix the issue, but the adviser said I could be back before my 60,000 warranty is up for another one. I hope not. I will update you guys when I have the new drive line installed.

Very interesting. Thanks for the update.

Ditto. I have been really curious as to an explanation. Be interesting to know what they did to the new propshaft to correct it.

It has most certainly fixed mine.

but the adviser said I could be back before my 60,000 warranty is up for another one. .

Hm, not thrilled to hear that.

Seems like it would be easier to fix the massive nose dive and keep the rest of the parts the same.

Agree. Are we considering this a design flaw or just a problem some toyotas have? If a design flaw, seems like something this obvious would come out in testing.

He was not totally positive on this when I asked about it, but he did mention that he thinks Toyota coated the splines with some kind of Teflon material to help ease the yoke back into position with less friction.

What's wierder about it is it's only a recall for the FJ's and 4Runners with the part time transfer cases.Even though all 4runners have the same part number drive shafts from the factory.

I have a Limited and has never done it although I religiously lube my driveshafts every time I change my oil.
Is there anybody here with a Limited with " the bump" and wonder if they would go ahead and warranty it,being a Limited?

That`s explains why mine not doing it yet, after I installed 5100 and rear sprints nose dive is minimized.
I`d also lube it if I knew how. is there any treads showing what to lube? is there fittings or Id have to disassemble something?

SO is this just limited to the SR'5 and the TE?? I have a LE and granted I only have just over 2000 miles on it, it hasn't shown up yet.

Not sure how much of it is from the nose dive. I've got stiffer than stock suspension and I get the "bump from behind" every so often, though maybe not as bad as what some have described. What's really annoying is that I mentioned the problem (but not that I knew about the TSB) this morning when I dropped the truck off for 32k km service. The work order that came back blamed the sensation on my "oversize tires and bouncy suspension". Pretty pissed about that right now.

I'm laughing but I really hate that sort of crap.

Just had my rear propellor shaft replaced this morning on my '10 TE per the TSB. What a difference! I just wish that it hadn't taken Toyota so long to issue the fix.

I have a Limited and have not experienced this with 58K miles on the truck. I grease the the driveshaft every oil change also.

What perplexes me is why this won't be handled under the extended warranty if the owner has it. Why purchase the extended warranty then??? My wife's is rolling up on 53k and I think I have noticed this before but I don't drive it on a daily basis.
