We need big, naturally aspirated engines in off-road vehicles. The last thing we need is a revvy 4 banger that sends someone over a cliff when the turbo spools up.

No need to worry. Go drive one of the turbo 4 models. Spooling up and surprising you with power is not going to be an issue. Lol. They're as milk toast as it gets.

The issue I see is that they're just too small for the weight.

Turbos are fantastic, if they build them to be reliable and serviceable. I think the reliable part is basically there. Very few issues after the first couple months. But they're not all all serviceable. Put the damn turbos where we can get to them. So if anything happens the fix is reasonable.

The new Toyota 3.3 global diesel is that way. Hot v. Turbo sits right up on top where it's super easy to access. EGR system is also sitting right up on top in the back and ready to service. Why not go that way with a V6 gasser? Or just make easy off fenders - problem solved. The other solution is an inline engine. Then access is usually super easy. Like the Cummins I6.

For that reason I like the turbo 4 over the V6 long term. But it's just too small. Needs 2 more cylinders!

Lots of options Toyota. Hope they figure it out.
