Toyota OEM rebuilt Steering rack from dealership.

our Toyota dealership sells remand racks with all new Toyota parts for 400$. A new rack is 750 from them. I've read remand are no good but are remand Toyota racks from the dealership better? I'm also looking at a rack from a salvage yard that came off a 4Runner with 57k miles but they want 200$.

Which one should I get?
Remand from Toyota for 400$ with new tie rod ends?
Or used rack off 57k mile 4Runner for 200 with tie rod ends?

Remand from Toyota is 1 year.
Salvage yard rack no warranty.

I would imagine if the Toyota rack has all new Toyota parts than it would be a good option.

If all parts are oem toyota, then yes $400 is a good buy. The OEM tie rods alone are at least $100 a pair.

I agree with you and cleanrunner. I've read about every post about remand racks and how terrible they are but toyota remand racks from the dealership are never mentioned. a company does the rebuilding for Toyota but uses all Toyota parts. I would just like a rack that can last me another 5-10 years without leaking fluid.

Been having to refill powersteering fluid about every 500 miles or so.
I went on a couple muddy trails and on the beach not knowing my driver side boot was ripped. There is some mud/water and steering fluid in the boot now. Previous owner had power steering fluid in it but I will be flushing the system with ATF fluid before I put the new rack on ,whichever route I go, so it does not contaminate the new rack.

Has anyone ever bought a remand rack from the Toyota dealership? Or are people just getting there's from the local auto parts store. I would like to know pros and cons if you have bought one from the dealership and if it would be superior than buying the used one off an 02 4Runner that only had 57k miles on it when it was rear ended and totaled.

I'm glad you mentioned this because every time I reverse out of a parking spot after it has sat for a few hours or so I do get a clunk. So a new rack would fix this issue too correct?

I've worked in a several steering rack and gear manufacturing plants (TRW, Showa, R.H. Sheppard) and I'd have a hell of a lot more faith in a remaned rack from one of those than I would in an auto parts store rack. There will be legitimate quality control systems in place that will make all the difference in the world.

The moving parts of a rack don't normally wear out, it's the guides and seals that go. If the rack itself is worn they're probably throwing it on a gear hobb or lapping machine to even it out, then using an oversized pinion to control the lash.

It's probably a very safe alternative to a new Toyota rack.

Anyone know who actually manufactures these racks? Aisin maybe?

That sounds more like a sway bar link to me, but it could be really worn bushings in the steering rack.

That's great news and I feel the remand rack from Toyota will be the way to go from what you and others are saying. Extra 200 dollars with a year warranty sounds better than taking a risk with the used one from salvage yard. I'll find out friday who remanufactures the racks for Toyota and get back to you.

And it's not sway bar links since both of them are brand new toyota replacements in the last couple months. I'll keep this post updated as well.

My old one had a ton of metal shavings it in when it failed completely. I don't know exactly what it means, but the thought of someone using my very messed up steering rack as a core for a reman'd one is not a happy thought. That thing was TOAST.

I got a brand new one from Camelback for $580.

If it's just seals and guides that go out, has anybody rebuilt one themselves?

i would say go with the toyota remanufactured one.

I decided to go that route Friday.I will be purchasing it as long as everything they said over the phone was true about all new Toyota parts being used for the rebuild.

And that is my biggest concern for buying a remand rack.many have said they are not meant to be rebuiit. I'm hoping Toyota tosses racks like yours and consider them unserviceable and not try and resell them. But from what Jeremy is saying it sounds like a good company can put together a good rack especially if the Toyota dealership is reselling them.

I'm leaking steering fluid out my driver side tie rod boot. It's been torn for awhile and has mud/water and steering fluid in it which is terrible for the rack and seals.i also could live without getting a new one but having a leak bothers me and I like to get stuff fixed sooner rather than later. I'm sure their are other symptoms of a bad rack out there too.
