Toyota OEM rebuilt Steering rack from dealership.

having rebuilt my own steering rack i can say that it is worth rebuilding if the metal surfaces are in good condition. if the cause of the leak is the seals then its worth rebuilding, if the rack is pitted rusted or damaged then the rack cannot be rebuilt without replacing that part, and i dont know where that would be bought.

Have you ever thought about the Safari steering rack? I have heard good things and know that a couple guys on here are running them. I don't know how much though....

I have not looked into the safari rack at all actually. I also have heard good things,But I bet shipping one to Hawaii could get pricey. I just figure you can't go wrong with OEM. Also like others have mentioned the original rack has lasted 14 years and probably could have lasted longer ,since I only have 120k miles , but I let mud ,dirt and water get in the torn boot.

I would really like to hear if anyone has any experience with a rebuilt rack from the Toyota dealership or is my dealership the only one having them rebuilt with OEM parts?

I've worked in a several steering rack and gear manufacturing plants (TRW, Showa, R.H. Sheppard) and I'd have a hell of a lot more faith in a remaned rack from one of those than I would in an auto parts store rack. There will be legitimate quality control systems in place that will make all the difference in the world.

The moving parts of a rack don't normally wear out, it's the guides and seals that go. If the rack itself is worn they're probably throwing it on a gear hobb or lapping machine to even it out, then using an oversized pinion to control the lash.

It's probably a very safe alternative to a new Toyota rack.

Anyone know who actually manufactures these racks? Aisin maybe?

my 2002 4Runner is my second vehicle and is mainly used as my daily and main winter vehicle

atm its leaking ps fluid and at first I was going to go with a reman rack but came across a new unit on rock auto by AAE figured I would give it a go as the price seems good and its a new unit

it looks nice but should be getting installed this week with moog outer tie rod ends as it doesn't come with them

Also there are companies that rebuild these. The place in Phoenix I found will rebuild for$250 or sell a rebuilt one for$250. Google Phoenix axle and rack. There are a few that do this in this area(Phoenix). Or just put that Lucas stuff in and keep her full of ps fluid.

I just ordered a new rack from camelback last night for 548.00 and free shipping. After searching and reading a lot of info on oem vs safari vs standard aftermarket I decided a new oem was best for me.

My inner tie rod ends are worn and have some play, i think my guide bushing is sloppy also. To add to it my drivers side boot shows some small leakage. I figured with my luck that I would spend 300ish on my current rack, then have it fail sometime soon. I checked out the safari website to find little info and no pricing on their racks, so I called the number listed and a automated message said they are closed permanently. So i am guessing the safari option is no longer available?

Not at the moment but I'll be back in a week from vacation and will be picking up the rack from Toyota so I will post back with the part#.

I called SERVCO today, they couldn't find me the reman rack. Only a new one for ~$950 (includes inner tie rods). The local auto parts stores are asking $330 for a reman rack.

It went well other than the old rack not wanting to come out haha but as stated you will need the outters but so far so good it looked exactly like the picture and I guess time will tell how it holds up

the frame of my 4runner isn't rusty but that rack sure was and the ps pressure line which I also wound up needing
