Toyota Replacing my Tranny in 2011 4Runner

Well after buying a new SR5 4X4 in march 2011 I noticed that the transmission started to skip or shudder when shifting from first to second at around 4K mi. I set up an appointment for them to check it out and the service manager drove it and it did it every time. They kept the vehicle for
two days called Toyota and were told to reload software. When I picked it up they the paperwork said that the transmission was functioning normally. I got in it and drove it home and it was no different. Well, about one year later dealership called me to tell me that there was now a TSB for this issue and the fix is a new transmission and software upgrade.
Truck goes in next monday for fix, I am not really happy about spending $35K on a Vehicle and
now it's going to be all torn apart. I hope they do a good job and it does not cause me some long term headaches down the road from not being put back together like it was from new.
Almost feel like trading it in after service. Not happy !!! It only has 12,500 mi on the clock and it needs major repair already. Are these Toyota's really any better than domestic vehicles ??
My friend has a GMC Yukon Denali with 225K and has had no majar repairs like this, just routine maint.

You're kidding, right? One 4Runner with a tranny problem and one GMC with no problems means absolutely nothing. Sorry that you've had problems but your unique experience says nothing about Toyota's overall quality.
 
I have 8kmi, shutters slightly from 1 to 2 sometimes, nothing hugely noticeable. This usually isnt an area where toyota has problems (at least not that I recall on ATs).

Toyota replaced the tranny in my 2011 SR5 4wd for the same issues at 24,000 miles. Mine was less than a year old at the time. My truck now has almost 57000 miles on it and the new transmission hasn't made the shudder at all since then.

I don't know what the problem was in my tranny, but the new one doesn't seem to have it. Knock on wood, because I'm about to run out of the warranty.

I fear I'm in need to replace mine as it "judder's" far more frequent than I would like. Its almost like it "skips" then catches itself then repeats even "start. stop". Do you have the service record from that replacement?
 
Nothing unique about it if others are having same problem and
Toyota has issued. TSB. This is my seventh new TOYOTA
and second tranny replacement under warranty.
2000 Tundra tranny failed at 30K
 
could you scan a copy of the tsb and post it when you get the chance?

i have a 2010 model 4runner trail edition that doesn't have the tranny problem but its something i'll keep an eye out on.
 
It was still having an issue and you didn't get it repaired? And that was a year ago? I'm pretty sure if you had pursued the issue back then we wouldn't be here now.

Also do you think General Motors would have called you over a year later to resolve the problem??

Just sayin.
 
Dealer told me Toyota was working on a fix and that took over a year, the only reason dealer called me because friend of mine works there, dealers don't normally call customers for a TSB.
Toyota's break and have problems like other companies vehicles.Why do you think they have big service dept's behind the showroom for !!
 
As you can see, I still believe the 4Runner is superior in quality to anything on the market.
If you take 100 of these and compare them to 100 Jeeps, Ford, Dodge or GM product I believe
the Toyota will have the least amount of problems. If i did get rid of this 4R it would be replaced with another Toyota product.My last 4R was rock solid with no problems.
 
This is a TSB?! If so, then one can view it, right? Do you have the TSB number??

This is the first TSB ever to include replacing the whole darn transmission! Weird!
 
I will get a copy of TSB and post it when my vehicle is fixed.From what I was told, this TSB was just released by Toyota.Service told me that there is one transmission in the warehouse and two enroute. He said they were taken directly from assembly line and have the upgraded parts installed to take care of this problem. I will post more details as they become available to me.
I am just passing on what I was told Friday. I am sure they will do a good job with repair, they know me at the dealership very well and know I will not tolirate second rate work.
This was sent to me via txt from service dept buddy. Quote "The TSB has been released for the shift concern on your 4R. The TSB requires that the transmission be replaced and the computer software updated"

I never understand when people ***** about having something fixed. Who gives a ****, its a man made product, things go wrong. At least they are standing behind their product and fix it. If you don't like it, go buy a Chevy, and watch them sidestep until you are out of warranty then charge you for the replacement. :toilet3:

Especially if Toyota is owning up with a good fix.

I did finally have enough of my 2001 ACURA CL after trans number 6 failed at a little over 40K mi. - even with extended warranty I got tired of being stranded and in a rent car for a week at a time. That's what sent me to the 4Runner. Acura never did address the root cause (major design defect) - the fix was bigger and bigger external hoses to pump extra oil on the overheated parts.

six transmissions??!?!?!?!?!?!!?!?!?
 
had my 2005 camry from 2005-2010 without anything but an oil change.

im surprised the acura needed so much work.
