Toyota Towing Guide vs. Owners Manual Specs

The Toyota Guide to Towing available from Toyota on the Web says a 2WD SR5 V8 GVWR is 5490, which matches my 2005's door jamb sticker.

The towing guide also says payload weight is 1235#, which includes cargo and passengers. My owner's manual says payload weight is 950# for a 5-passenger model (which mine is) and 1050# for a 7-passenger (which mine isn't). What the heck?

I am now towing a travel trailer and calculating all of the weight factors involved with towing safely and this payload discrepancy either makes me very tight (at 950#) or gives me some breathing room (over 950#).

Has anybody got clarification about this?

Currently it weighs 4780 on its own. Tongue weight is 650 currently (weighed w/ a Sherline tongue scale).

Planned passenger and cargo weight on the light side would be 350.

I think you'll be fine. IIRC, V8's have the tranny cooler as well. But I am sure some experience haulers will chime in. Bump for you...

Forgot to mention that I am using a weight distribution hitch system w/ sway control, the Pro Series SC. The hitch is the Toyota factory hitch, rated at 7300# for weight distribution use.

My question is the difference in payload capacity for the vehicle, as I'd like to throw a couple of kayaks on top of the roof racks (Yakima's) occasionally. That would add about 120# more to vehicle payload.

Alrighty, I guess I'll take it to the public scale during the week and weigh it empty w/ a full tank of gas to determine whether the owner's manual is right, the Toyota Towing Guide is right, or neither
