Toyota vs. Ford

Heh...yeah, she likes my 4runner, but we are lookin at the Highlander for her. A new one, v6, sport edition probably, but she's owned all american cars, but i tell her id keep up w the maintenance and like i am w mine. She likes the "looks" (ugh) of the GMC Terrain, so i think its more about ethstetics.

God, give me strength.
 
haha like I said tell her it'd be better to go with something that isn't tanking out from the economy, besides, GMC (no offence to anyone who may own one) I don't think has the greatest trucks (but can look mean if modded right)

The highlander would be a great choice, I'd think & will definately do better than that truck.

Or atleast tell her to go with a Ford if she won't lean towards the Highlander. lol
 
We test drove the Ford Ranger 4x4, the Ford Flex, and the Ford Escape. Before we chose the 4Runner TE, we also test drove the Tacoma 4x4, the FJ Cruiser, and the 2009 Limited 4Runner. The Ranger was the closest in size to my old '85 22R pick-up, but sitting in it was claustrophobic, much like the FJC was. The Escape was a little better on the interior space, but the interior felt cheap. The Flex also had cheap looking carbon fiber accents and less ground clearance than a Camry. The Tacoma 4x4 couldn't fit in our garage and we felt just as claustrophobic in it as we did the Ranger even though the Tacoma is HUGE in comparison. We both thought the 4th Gen 4Runner was a "no go" but we confirmed it during our test drive; nothing specific just a cumlative "ugh".

I really wanted to like the FJC, the Flex, and the Ranger, but in the end the Trail Edition was the only one that fit. hopefully it proves to be as bullet-proof as the '85 pick-up.:D
 
Wow! Thats a lot of test-drivin' ! I let out a full-fledged "UGH" when she said that she would "have to be blown away by the Highlander" cuz she wasnt crazy about the way it looks. I like the way my bank account looks with the very very few visits to the mechanic, i'll say that! Sheesh!

I wanna get a new 4Runner, but im not trilled there's no V8 option. If they bring it back, im sold! Wont hold my breath tho.

Yeah....then ill "just happen" to be banished to the couch for a week, and i sher as hell wont "like" that! Lol ill def use the "gmc mite not be around to honor the warrantee" argument. Its also easy for me to handle the maintainance cuz the dealership is rite next to my workplace!
 
My wife has a 2003 Taurus...unbelievably awesome car. We put 200 K on her 1st Taurus with only maintenance (until we lost a freeze plug). Her 2nd Taurus has 100 K and is going strong.
As to what is hurting American car manufacturers...pretty simple...the Unions suck a big one! We all know that the salaries/benefits of the workers and the top executives are just way out of hand - when you put that much money into labor, there is no way you can focus on quality/performance the way the rice burners can.
Need an example of how much unions suck? My idiot cousin (who has no electrical experience) was hired by CSX (huge rail transportation company) here in Richmond, VA as an electrical apprentice at $ 65 K a few years back (plus benefits). He was telling a story how they can't even "pick up a forgotten tool" if it is not "clearly" written in their work order! OMG - how screwed up is that?
So - don't bash the company - bash the unions for screwing them up! My 2 cents.

I always liked Ford trucks and wanted a boat and decent camping trailer, and got some dogs. I waited a couple years with the itch (like with my 4Runner) and watched the sunday paper ads, and from my Dad's brainwashing, knew I would never get a Dodge or whatever. Almost bought the last gen of Tundra, the "7/8ths truck" but I needed seating for 6, split bench in the front. One day I saw a price I couldnt believe and checked a bunch of other dealers for a match and they couldnt do it, so I went to the dealership with the ad and asked if the price was legit, not one of the those "one avaiable at this price" ads, and the guy said "sure, I have 40 of these, pick your color. I'll be back later to check on you." I got exactly what I wanted, crew cab, XLT cloth basic interior, 5.4, basic and strong overall. It was like I ordered it. It was $22.5K out the door (2006) and that was that. It is an awesome truck, but far different animal than my classic T4R (which I seem to spend more time with lately).

throwing myself into this one.

Before getting Rascal, I was a complete Ford owner with the exception of one Honda for 3 months. They all were great, the 84 Mustang was the best. However, interior-wise, not anywhere close to being as comfortable and nice as the Toyota's are. The longest trip so far in the Runner has been to S Padre which was like 5 hrs or so straight - never had a single issue, no pains/aches anything. Anything over an hour in the Fords and my butt started to get stiff and my back started to hurt a bit. I only ever had one engine problem and that was in the last one, an 04 Ford Ranger, one of the engine fuel injectors died less than 5K into the vehicle, Ford fixed it w/out issue.

All that said, I will never buy another Ford again. They do NOT hold any monetary value whatsoever and I have never loved a vehicle like I do the Runner. And this is from someone who NEVER thought they would be anything but a Ford owner.

But GMC was bailed out, if ya don't remember. Wonder how long they'll actually stick around now. Ford & Toyota are two of the biggest manufacturers who'll actually be around for awhile (Ford still manages to hang in there)

But see, that works cause all you gotta do if it ever brakes down on you is push it. :D

GMC/Chevrolet had a commercial on TV yesterday extolling the virtues of their new, longer powertrain warranty (5 years/100k miles) and their "May the best car win" philosophy.

All fine and good, I guess; but in the early part of the ad, the GM CEO is claiming that GM "paid back" the government loan - plus interest and two years ahead of schedule.

If this is indeed true, I am impressed. I was not in favor of either recent bailout and still think the "Big Three" are rather top-heavy; but if GM is indeed 'on the way back', I suppose that is a good thing.

I own a (purchased used last winter) 2004 Chevrolet Silverado truck, and want to be able to obtain parts and service for it, you know? I doubt GM will ever return to the #1 spot, but I believe they can stay in business & thrive if they do things properly. Their fleet sales and overseas growth (China, Middle East, Australia, etc.) is going to help to keep that behemoth moving along.

The jury is still out on Chrysler/Dodge (FIAT?) - and things look good for Ford (which did not take bailouts). True competition keeps quality up and prices down - something our politicians in both parties need to keep in mind.

That's where Government Motors doesn't tell the whole story. I got an email from them too, being a past Chevy owner. They proclaim, they paid everything back, including interest five years ahead schedule.

What they (GM) don't disclose is the money they used to pay back part of the loans came from an escrow account that was setup in the event the economic situation worsens. The rest of the loans from the government was converted in 60% owner equity in GM.

Yeah they paid it back! The government totally screwed Toyota through the media (worse defects in American made cars, sorry, Toyota didn't make that big of a mistake in comparison) which in turn swayed people to GM and American made garbage and made their money back.


As for the main point,
Ford vs. Toyota? NO COMPARISON in my book. But I may be biased because I'm from a household of 5 Toyotas, 1 Honda, and 1 classic sentimental Camaro. ;) Plus the immediate family has at least 6 more Toyotas :)

I heard them mention that in the GM ad and thought to myself that it was "too quick" for them to have been able to do that (pay off their loans). Nobody mentioned their legacy costs - or what kind of money GM is going to have to spend in order to pay future liabilities for their ever-expanding number of union retirees who don't earn any revenue for the company.

This imbroglio reminds me of how the Clinton administration (and Congress, too) used the Social Security tax (FICA) revenue (erroneously called a "surplus") to mask the size of the real deficit during the 1990s.

Crap such as this only reinforces my belief that we need a smaller and less-intrusive government; not one that is larger and more costly.


P.S. That would be like taking a cash advance on a credit card, depositing into your checking account and calling it "income." Sheesh!

You couldn't be more right about that, I notice that all of the inferior automakers make their commercial about bashing other automakers.

Mercedes-Benz and Toyota, both of them, do not do this. I am sure there's plenty others like VW, etc.

I was watching TV one day and I was shocked when I saw a commercial comparing a Lexus ES or GS to a POS Buick LaCrosse. I thought Lexus stooped down low, I was disappointed in Toyota. I counted my eggs before they hatched, it was the LaCrosse commercial... lol.

Man, and if every single domestic truck commercial doesn't bash on each other+Toyota, their marketing campaign wouldn't exist.

Ford's Edge, the same shit, "It rides better than my Mercedes" which they mentioned multiple times in the ad. The guy probably has a 1984 300SD or a 98 C220. I'd LAUGH if Ford ever tried to battle Mercedes-Benz on comfort, absolutely break down and cry on the floor laughing like a little kid.

Also can't stand commercials that bash every other automaker at once, I remember seeing a commercial for a shitty FWD SUV, I think Suzuki's XL-7 or something... they were driving on a flat dirt road (uhh... offroading?) with tons of other cars. A BMW X5 (I agree, POS) stopped in front of some mud (barely any) and they commercial claimed it was too scared to get dirty, also pictured an Excursion stopping saying it was too big. They wouldn't dare try putting a 4Runner in the mix, I'd laugh if they did. BTW, the SUV that was being marketed stayed on this flat path of dirt...

Toyota marketing for the 4Runner has always been rugged, I love the commercials for the 3rd gen where the bumper scoops up some real dirt.

General Motors... HA! Who wants nothing but plastic and poor engineering?

Clearly none of us, we all have 4Runners :D

Just say no!

I must confess that I broke down and sold my Toyota and bought a Ford once. I was heading to Iraq and my 2000 Tacoma wasn't paid off. I didn't know how long I would be gone, so I sold it to get rid of the payments and and paid cash for a 94 4x4 Bronco because it was a "good deal."

It was nothing but problems the entire time I had it from electrical problems to T-case problems, couldn't keep the front end aligned even after replacing everything. When the tranny went south it was the final straw. Granted, it was not new when I bought it, but I spent enough on it during the time I owned it to have easily paid off the Tacoma, which incidentally, was by far the best truck I ever owned. I miss it still.

I bought a brand new Jeep in 1990 that was a total lemon. I spent $2k on the 7/70 bumper to bumper warranty and in the 35 months that I owned it I spent $3700 total in repairs on that piece of $#!+

I traded it in on a brand new 1993 Z-71 that was a good running truck, but I had to learn how to adjust the alignment on it myself because it would get knocked out every time I took it off road.

I do like the Raptors, but I won't ever buy another truck if it isn't a Toyota. I plan to keep my 4Runner forever. When it starts getting pooped I will probably buy a Tundra or Tacoma unless they change the body style of the 4Runners again.

I have to add that my wife has a 2008 VW Passat that has been a superb car. It is the most comfortable car I have ever been in, and has been totally reliable and economical from day one.
