I work during the day so I had my father take my 14 runner in for the 20k service. When he brought it back to me I immediately noticed a significant vibration while idling, accelerating and decelerating. I called the service dept and of course they're gone for the day. I checked the dipstick and the oil level appears to be several inches above the normal range. Would too much oil cause this?

So you say its several inches above the top indicator on the dip stick? So that would be about a full quart too full? Damn, that is a lot. You could wait and call the dealership tomorrow and see what they say to do or you could drain some out. If it were me, Id wait and make the dealer fix it.

I hear you there. Probably just get some lame excuse and maybe an apology?
This is something that has plagued me for years. Most often if not always, you have to make a second trip to the service dept. to get something done right. As you mentioned, your work schedule is full, so do you really have time to waste going back to the dealer? My guess would be a big NO.
Hope you get things worked out to your satisfaction.
Maybe when the next oil change comes up it will be better weather.

4 inches too high? Sounds like they filled it twice. Usually a quart is an inch or an inch and a half. They have these pumps at dealers that are supposed to dole out a predetermined amount of oil. Either someone hit the button twice or had a vehicle in before yours that takes way more oil like a 7 quart BMW Z3.

Yes I have previously posted a couple of my screwups. Totally forgot about that one. I have drained the oil and filled it twice a couple times out of thousands of oil changes. Sorry but sooner or later everyone screws up. Thats not an excuse its still sucks but life is good if you own a new 4 runner. Not defending anyone else just telling it like it goes down at the dealership or any repair place. The fact that he forgot to drain it, thats a new one to me.

Were it me, I would take that 12 quarts and dump it right on the floor of the service bay.
But it wouldn't be me, because I service my own vehicle. Don't trust them. Free ain't so free when you have to deal with crap like this, is it?

I, and I alone take the 4Runner in for service. I go to my dealership because, well they service a lot of 4Runners and that gives me some confidence. That being said, when they roll the vehicle out, I go over everything, including checking fluid levels and my tire pressures (they love to drop them back to 32). Last time I was out there, one of the mechanics saw me doing this, smiled and gave me a head nod. The look on his face said it all.....They do the work, but it's always smart to check things yourself. Mistakes happen, especially in environments where people are working on several projects all at once while not getting paid like they should give a shit. That said, this is not an "oops, our bad" type of mistake. Oil overfill can cause issues like foaming etc, but I have no idea what 2x the amount of oil would do. You need to get this documented with the dealership for future issues. I've run test vehicles with 120 to 130% oil levels that had no issues (they were running 20+ hrs a day), as there will always be some leeway engineered in. However 200% seems like it is out of scope and not something that would be planned for. The good news is that it sounds like you caught it right away so hopefully any damage will be non-extant or very minimal. Good luck with the dealership, sometimes they will do right by their names and sometimes they suck.
My family have used this dealership our entire lives and never had anything close to a problem. I'm definitely going to have it documented. What would you all suggest I ask for compensation? I'd like the engine inspected but my confidence in this dealership has sunk to the basement.

Finally talked to them. Service manager flooded me with apologies and said to bring it back in and he would personally see that it got the service done right along with compensation for my travel and inconvenience.
What do you all think? I'm going to report them to Toyota as well.

When you think of all the things that had to go wrong for the oil to be filled w/o draining it is mind boggling. The filter could not have been changed, the dipstick never looked at, chances are the vehicle never got in the air because most mechanics I've worked with (I spent 5 years with Honda as a Service Adviser) pull the vehicle in, lift it up and start that oil draining - it's the part that takes the longest. Your prop shaft was probably not lubed and torqued. Problem is it was probably an oil change tech - not a mechanic. In that way, going to a smaller shop where the mechanics do the oil changes themselves has been my preference when I couldn't do it myself.

Apologies won't fix any issues you might have down the road. I would have them warranty the motor for the rest of time.
Props to Toyota for building a motor that can handle twice as much oil than needed. After 40 miles I can't believe oil didn't pour out from various places. When I was 16 I put about a quart too much in my Grand Prix GTP, after a day I had oil leaks and a $600 charge to fix it.
