Toytec Boss vs Bilstein 6112/5160 setup

Does the TRD Pro use the same rear coils as the rest of the 4Runners?

What I'm getting at is that in order to mimic the TRD Pro suspension one would need the 6112 Coilovers (what circlip perch settings?) and 5160 rear shocks with OEM coil springs?

It does.

To mimic the TRD suspension, 0.85" in the front is the closest (typically TRD suspension gives an inch, give or take). TRD rear shocks give 1" more travel, though the rear is not lifted. Not sure about using 5100s with no lift (spring or spacer) in the rear, as I think that shock allows 2" more travel (to accommodate lifts), and could be an issue. Not sure about that one.

I personally think these vehicles look best lifted 2" in the front and 1" in the rear, keeping the running boards (i.e. frame) near level, maybe with 1/2" rake. Whenever a vehicle has equal space in the fenders, it always looks to me like my boys did when they were little and needed a new diaper... :yuck:

I installed my Toytech Boss 2.5 coilovers 8 months ago knowing I would eventually add a winch bumper with a winch and an aftermarket skid plate. Well I recently did just that. All that extra 350 Lbs or so pulled the front end down about an inch. Today I grabbed the spanner wrench and a 3' cheater bar, sprayed some WD-40 and went to work. They still look like new. No rust or corrosion.

The first 1/2" went pretty easy. The second 1/2" I had to use a cheater bar as it was getting pretty tight. It took about 45 minutes to crank it up an inch.

Would a heavier coil be a better option (truck suspension newb)? Not sure if TT Boss has a heavier coilover option or not.

Side note, love how your rig looks. like the writeups on your site as well. Got any pics from that big bear black diamond run?

They are the heavier 650Lb coils. I bought them knowing I would be adding the extra weight.

A couple of Big Bear Runs.

I hear that. That happened to us with our old clay sewer line. Nothing like a new sewer line to put a kink in the toys. That was a painful year ... ugh.

I'm also leaning towards the 6112/5160 setup.

Here is Denver Slee really likes the OME setup, but I'm nut sure I want to go the full 3in. I'm planning on UCAs not matter what I do. I don't want to pay labor/allighment twice. I also run empty 85% of the time so I'm a little worried about the heavier spring rates that OME uses. Most of my driving is to/from school and up I70 or skiing/mountain biking/camping. Also a few trips to Crested Butte :)

The OME would be a little cheaper than the Bils. I'm trying to work out what the ride difference would be. That one thing that is hard to judge from the forums.

I did run into a guy at my Starbucks in the Highlands with a '14 Limited. He had the Toytec Boss set and he hated it. No joke ... he said it drove like a tank and he wished he never bought it. He knew the ride would be stiffer than stock but he didn't know it would be that stiff. He told me if he could afford to replace it he would get something else in a heartbeat. I could tell buy the guys face that he was really upset. His parting comment was buy anything else besides the Toytec ...

For me it all comes down to the ride. I drove a lifted 4 door Wrangler Rubi for just over 9 years. The thing was a tank. I am soooo happy with my '17 TRDORP (with KDSS) I don't want to mess up the ride, but I want the ground clearance.

For me my order right now is (1 and 2 are neck and neck to be honest)
  1. 6112/5160 - basically the TRD Pro suspension just liftable :)
  2. OME - with moderate spring rates (NOT the HD springs)
  3. 5112/5100 - a basic lift in my mind

Just to give an update to my comments.

Here in Denver, Slee Off-road has and extremely good rep. It has been in to the shop 5-6 months ago and got back today. I started out looking for info on lifts. I laid out my driving and how I plan to use my TRDORP off road.

In a nut shell 90% on road. Mostly short trips to/from the kids school. Longer trips are up skiing (Winter Park, Steamboat, Crested Butte) and similar areas in the summer for camping and easy/moderate off-roading.

He said there were two kits to start with. One was the OME with UCA and the second was 6112/5160 with UCA. He said if I wasn't going bumper, winch and spare tire carrier, I shouldn't look at the OME kit. He said the ride quality of the OME in an empty 4Runner was to harsh. He outlined how the OME kit really shines when the rig is full loaded but that isn't how I'll have my TRDORP setup daily.

The 6112/5160 combo with UCA and OME rear springs was the setup they commended. The ride quality is not harsh in any way. The quality of the shocks are top notch and there are no fitment issues. They have done several 6112/5160 installs and believe is the best option unless you step up to fully adjustable Fox, King or Icon. They didn't suggest using the Boss options. They said if your looking at them its better to spend the extra money at least Icon or Fox/King. Another interesting point is they outline how here in CO the environment (dust, mag-chloride, sand/gravel on the winter roads and so on) is really hard on these types of shocks. The higher end parts don't always hold up to the abuse of CO roads and elements. They have seen much fewer issues with 6112/5160 then other more costly options.

For me ... I'm going with 6112/5160, UCA and OME rear springs. I'm pretty sure Slee will be doing the install. They include a alignment with the install. They also keep measurement and feed back for every install they do. They know inside and out what works for what people are looking for :D

Definitely gonna go with the 6112/5160 setup. Been eyeing this setup for months and this forum confirms it's exactly what I'm looking for.

I've seen several posts about leaking 5160's and 6112's. Can anyone in here confirm whether or not they've had that problem?!?!

I give reports like that pause. Like jpovs said it may be from over extension. You also don't know how the sock was used. They make the 5160 for a ton of different vehicles and not just the 4runner. I'm not worried about the reports. Also everything will leak and fail at some point.

I've had Bilstein 5100s on 2 previous trucks with no issues. Great shocks. I do drive conservatively so that does play a factor. Someone who is aggressive may encounter excessive wear or damage. Also, using your equipment for its intended purpose is good advice. You don't see 5100s on trophy trucks and rock crawlers.

6112/5160 OME medium duty springs

Hello all. This is my first post here although I used this thread to make my decision about the suspension I wanted to use. I recently purchased a 2017 TRD Off Road. Much like everyone else, I could not stand the front end break dive and I also wanted to lift the vehicle a bit. I spoke to a few guys at 4 wheel parts about which path I should go (even though I know what I wanted) Playing dumb, they were very helpful in pointing why the Bilstein setup would be perfect for my mostly highway commute but occasional off road camping trips. The rear springs is where I didn't know what I wanted. I plan on getting a small camper down the road but for now, we load up that cargo area with all kinds of camping stuff. They recommended the OME 3" medium duty springs. Now with this installed I still maintained the factory rake (which I'm not too big on.) I think there are smaller rear springs one could purchase to get a more level ride. Empty ride is slightly harsh if you hit let's say a railroad crossing at a high rate of speed but overall the ride is extremely smooth and glides over potholes. Should be noted I do have 285/70 tires on stock wheels so I think those soak up the bumps as well. For me, this is an excellent setup and much much better than stock ride. Ride quality over looks is what I went with and got.

This is a great post! I'm in the same boat right now with my 17' ORP. I was debating between the 6112/5160 setup vs the 6112/5100 setup. Mine's mostly a DD with the occasional trip. I found the setup for roughly 800 on amazon for the 6112/5100 setup with springs struts etc. Should i go with the 5100 or the 5160 in the back?

Thanks!

you should match 5160 in the rear.

I am also in the same boat either to swing for a full fox/king setup or 6112 combo. Even the 5100 setup is super tempting because of the cost/benefit. :bowl:

Yes I'd go with 5160. You'll basically have a TRD Pro suspension but saving a few thousand off the purchase price. (Markup in Texas for the Pro is ridiculous) The difference based on the installer at 4 wheel parts was because I went with OME springs for the rear. He said he's done about 10 5th gen 4runner with the 6112/5160 setup but this was the first one with the OME springs. He mentioned this setup was the smoothest he's driven. Now I'm just wondering if I can add a spacer for the front to level out the vehicle

I'm happy in going with the 6112/5160 setup with T13 springs in the rear. Drives well on the highway and worked well last week on an easy trail. I like that it eliminated the front end dive during braking, in addition to not riding rough on the highway.

During my 5160 install, found that the holes that were supposed to be threaded on the frame were not threaded...used for the reservoir mount. I used a rivet nut for the holes.

awesome! i'm happy with the bilstein setup as well. but i wish they had a 3-3.5" option. 2.5 is great but i need more lift! lol. but better than stock!

Dont go toytec. I installed a full boss setup with Camburg uniballs and the toytec fronts were ok for the first year then they started clunking(like the sound my old trucks front struts made when they were bottoming out), but what really gets me is that I tried to readjust them because they've started to sag a bit and they are completely stuck in place because the threads have begun to corrode. I battled them for a couple hours last weekend with no luck. So, technically these coilovers are adjustable, but only at install!! It sucks.

Wow 15 posts and he bad mouths Toytech. I have had mine for two years and they look as good as the day I installed them. Maybe you should take care of your stuff.

The front 6112 is a coilover kit. But you're right, I think that specific model isn't rebuildable, and the ToyTec BOSS are rebuildable. Is it that important?

The BOSS coil overs 2.0 are not rebuildable, you can replace the shock in case of failure. The BOSS Performance 2.5 it is fully rebuildable

This is a bit off topic, but does include Toytec. I decided to go with the Toytec Ultimate 3" lift with the Billy 5100 coilovers and the Superflex springs paired with the TT Boss for the rear. This system will be installed on a new 2017 T4R SR5, so whats you guys take on this system?
