Toytec Boss vs Bilstein 6112/5160 setup

I'm happy in going with the 6112/5160 setup with T13 springs in the rear. Drives well on the highway and worked well last week on an easy trail. I like that it eliminated the front end dive during braking, in addition to not riding rough on the highway.

During my 5160 install, found that the holes that were supposed to be threaded on the frame were not threaded...used for the reservoir mount. I used a rivet nut for the holes.

Damn right I had bad things to say after spending good money on a full BOSS setup and having the replace everything except the diff drop after only 2 years! For christ sake, one of my rear shocks sheared right off just below the top mount, and my front coilovers were leaking and rode like absolute hell. Hopefully their new designs have been engineered better, otherwise you'll be posting similarly after a couple years bro. I can tell you they wont get another cent from me. Good luck.

Installed a complete Toytec Boss 3" lift kit with Bilstein 5125's on the rear on my 2000 4runner, 2 1/2 years ago. Replaced one front shock that leaked empty on a road trip already, other one is totally leaked out now, Bilsteins are also gone, replaced with Rancho's for now. The whole system will be going in the garbage soon.
When I installed this system I thought I was done with suspension worries for the remaining life of the 2000 4R.
I don't beat my truck up, it's a 90% daily driver with mild trail use on logging/mining/forest tracks.
Called Toytec to inquire about warranty - one year only. The OEM shocks/springs lasted 15 years with no leaks and were still use able, I just wanted the extra height for some of the places I have been going.
Toytec's response "You can't expect performance parts to last as long as OEM parts"
Now looking at options to replace the whole system again and it definitely won't be Toytec...

I see this thread is attempting to revive.

What are your thoughts on getting a TRD Pro suspension and adding the toytec TRD Pro lift to it. The springs are a little softer than stock, and the Bilstein shocks are specifically valved for this truck. If you haven't driven one, it really is plush on-road and it can handle fast whoops and off-roading surprisingly well. I don't have the toytec lift added to mine, but others report it doesn't change the ride quality much and it allows enough clearance to fit 285s.

Cost from Toyota is high, but there seem to be people removing the suspension from their Pros and selling them on the forum.

I understand that it won't be as good for rock crawling as some of the other suspension systems out there, but if you don't intend to rock crawl, it's another option to consider.

What do you guys think?

I basically built a TRD Pro from a '16 Trail Premium, and then lifted the front using the Toytec spring seat spacers (effectively the same as 'clipping up' on a 6112). I personally think it is a great option if you have access to cheap TRD takeoffs, otherwise the 6112/5160 is virtually identical from all anecdotal evidence. Swapped rear springs for Wheelers T-13s giving +1.5" in the back, and I think she sits perfectly. I would not change a single thing about how my truck rides both on and off-road, but I do have KDSS.

I was all stoked two years ago when I got my 14 trail, I did a ton of research and decided to go with the Toytec Boss system. Huge mistake! It rode fine for a while, then the front coilovers started clunking and riding like crap and more recently the driver rear shock completely broke in half right below the top mount. Worst part is that Toytec never got back to me regarding the problems. I can tell you that there is no replacing the many years of experience Bilstein brings to the table. Stay away from the Toytec suspension systems!!!!

Did you approach the person that installed your equipment? What was the cause of failure?

Sorry to resurrect this but I am finally close buying my first 4Runner lift kit.

My main goal is to have a moderate lift to be able to run 285s at a later moment (running 265s KO2 now) and most importantly improve ride quality.
My 4runner is stock at the moment but I am planning to add a full rack and sliders soon.

I came down to 2 setups (both with the addition of UCAs):
- Bilstein 6112 Front / 5160 Back
- King 25001-278A Front / 25001-125A/279A Back

The rear spring has to be decided but I have been recommended from the installer the ARB 2895E

Now, the 2 setups are like $2000 apart which I would be happy to invest for something else.
I'm doing moderate offroad 1-2 times a month, so I'm not hardcore but I was wondering if the KING are really worth the extra price.
I would rather spend the extra cash now and be 100% happy than having regrets later.

I'm SURE the Kings are awesome and I almost went with them, but I just did a reality check for myself and decided the 6112/5160 was plenty for what I do and for my first suspension upgrade. I'm glad I put the miles in that I did with a stock vehicle to notice the better quality ride that I have now. Love it and the way it looks of course. I'd think you may have to do some trimming to get 285's to fit.

I would agree with safdSA. I really like my 6112/5160 combo for what I do (mostly fireroads to remote camping spots with a RTT). The 6112/5160 Icon 2" rear spring has been on for about 9 months and about 1k off-road miles with no issues. Now the pin stripes from brush that's another issue.....

i used dobinsons but went with 599 that gave me around 2" lift--there will be a spring that suits your needs

I had Eibach rear springs from their kit and it was a true one inch but I have a 3rd row though.
