Toytec vs Icon

THE MACF

New member
Newb lifting question here.

First off, never lifted a vehicle, coming from both a lowered X-Runner and 1st gen xB. So forgive the newbness, but at least I'm keeping it in the family.

From what I've been able to learn on my own through the all valuable search function, the Toytec is just a set of adjustable coilovers that can increase ride height at a twist of a spring. (just like coilovers for cars). These would require an alignment everytime the spring is adjusted.

The Icon (anything past stage 2) is a complete suspension design overhaul designed more for long travel and articulation and high speed desert running.

I know travel and articulation are good because it keeps the tire in contact with the ground while you're off camber off road.

Are the UCA/LCA's stronger than stock? smaller for bigger tires? more travel i think?

If you're just looking for more ground clearance to get out into the backwoods with mud pits and dirt trails on your way to the campsite and not doing any technical rock crawling or high speed desert running wouldn't the toytec ultimate be ideal for a daily driver?

Looking at an SR5 BP with premium and nav becasue I want a manually shifted 4wd and heated seats.

Thanks for the help,

Chris

Extended travel is kind of acurate. The shock/coilover bodies themselves provide more travel and articulation compared to the OEM units, but then there are Long Travel kits that are far longer than either set.

Icons are expensive, but high quality products meant for serious abuse and are designed as such. Not saying the Toytec's are crap, they're good products and if you don't want to spend a lot of money they are the best bang for the buck in terms of a coilover lift kit. I myself went with the OLW 2.5" Lift Kit, but I was looking at the Icons and Toytec for a while. Both are a coil over design, the Icons offer a remote tank option for their later stages, which is nice.

Either kit is going to require new UCA to bring the alignment specs back to factory if you're looking for roughly 3" of lift. Icon provides their billet aluminum (its a well crafted and beautiful part, but its about $1100 just for a pair) UCA that have gotten great reviews by many owners. Most people run the Light Racing UCA which can be had for about $500 and they use a traditional balljoint on a adjustable plate to adjust your camber/caster, while units such as the Icon or Chaos Fab use eliptical bolts if I remember right.

All in all, the Toytec's are the best entry level set to get, but if you have the money to spend a little extra, I would look at Overland Warehouse or Icon's as they'll be a better investment.

Post Note-
I have adjusted my OLW Coilovers about 1/4-1/2 an inch and still not had to readjust the alignment from when I first installed them.

Overland Warehouse is out of business, just FYI. so yeah, you're back to your original two choices: Toytec or Icon. the Toytec kit is Eibach springs and Bilstein shocks, i believe, whereas Icon is all custom components. for your described use the Toytec kit will probably be fine... but "ideal for a daily driver"? that's totally subjective. you're unlikely to regret spending the extra $ (if you can) on the Icons, though.

Radflo, makers of the OW Kit, are still in Bus. and great guys to deal with. They offer a '10+ kit.

Metaltech and Slee Offroad also sell very nice custom valved suspensions, made by Radflo, now for our 5th Gens.

Icon sources their springs through Eibach also - made to their spec.

Correct me if I'm wrong...... I believe the Icons need more maintenance than Toytecs. Somebody help me out here? I guess that's pretty typical with any higher-performance specialty part.

I also think realistically, the suspension travel is limited by CV's, etc. Coilovers and UCA's can only increase travel so much.

I've had the Toytech coilovers on my Trail Edition for a couple weeks now and couldn't be happier with them for my daily driver. I would describe the ride as only slightly firmer than stock and the truck feels much more "planted" on the road. I would say the Toytech setup would be a great choice for the scenario you mentioned. AND, the Bilsteins have a lifetime warranty which the others don't.

good to know. i wasn't aware.

yeah, that new Slee setup looks nice. haven't looked into the metaltech, but to the OP: pretty sure metaltech has a sale every holiday weekend. they're a forum sponsor, too.

I can tell you, after some two weeks of on and off road testing, the Sleep shocks are
FANTASTIC. And you do not need UCA replacement.
