Toytec with 285/70/17 Duratrac

Doublehaul

Planning on doing the Toytec ultimate lift after my research. I have browsed extensively for the past few days and still have a few questions on what I'm trying to do. Please excuse my ignorance.

-Can I run stock wheels on my 2011 sr5 with bigger tires and no issues?

-What is the optimal wheel size for 285/70/17 if I do plan to upgrade?

-Do I need to do anything to prevent rubbing after the upgrade (i.e. spacer, uca, etc.) or have you guys run this combo (stock wheel w/ 285 duratrac - or any aftermarket wheel) with no rub and full compression?

Thanks in advance.

Optimally need 10" rims for the 285's. Trail Editions have 9.5" wheels from what I've read. I've got a TE and my Ultimate is getting installed tomorrow with Duratrac 285's.

Actually TEs have a 7.5" rim. SR5s have a 7" rim. Optimal width for a 285 is 8-8.5". Most guys on here run 8" wide.

So I can't fit the 285s on my 7" wide sr5 rims? Do the 285s require any modification for rubbing or will they be fine on the toytec ultimate?

They fit. Ive seen quite a few guys on here running 285's (specifically GY DT's) on 5th Gen SR5 wheels.

Pete, I have the Toytec Ultimate/285 Duratrac setup on my 2010 TE. You'll definitely need to do the fender liner modification (easy & can be done with a box knife. There's a thread that has great pics of what to do) and you'll want to get as much caster as you can get (+4 is the max I think) when you get the alignment done. I went ahead and got the LR UCAs from Toytec since I'd read that it was hard/impossible to get a good alignment without them after the lift. If you don't increase the caster, you'll definitely rub on the frame's body mount when backing up and turing the wheels full-lock either direction. So, if it's in your budget I'd recommend getting the new UCAs and having them installed at the same time you do the lift (and, they don't necessarily look any better than the stock UCAs but they are certainly a bit beefier). If you decide to add them later you'll definitely be paying for another alignment (and for the second install unless you're going DIY). Plus, they're easier to install when you have the strut assembly removed so doing it all in one fail swoop would be my advice.

Even with the UCAs and alignment I had to remove the mud flaps (they're stock on the TE but I don't think they come on the SR5). Also, I'm running the TRD wheels so my offset/backspacing is different than your stock SR5 wheels. I can't remember what the offset/backspacing is of the TRD wheels off the top of my head but they are 17x7.5 for reference.

That said, no rubbing issues in normal driving and during a recent Moab trip that found me wheeling on Hell's Revenge and (finally) properly breaking in the lift (which perfomed like a champ!). Hope that helps.

When I had my lift and tires installed, I had my 285 Duratracs mounted on my stock SR5 wheels. There were no issues, just had to move the fenderwell forward a bit. I bought new wheels a little later which are 8" wide. To answer your question, yes, you can use your stock wheels with those tires and others have as well.

Need to find the link to the fender liner mod...got my lift and tires today.

Found it...

I'd suggest that rather than cutting an additional hole or elongating the existing screw holes in your fender liner, just move it as far forward as you'd like and punch the screw directly threw the liner plastic -- it's easy to get the screw to tap through and this way you don't have to worry about the liner working it's way back towards the wheel if the screw were to ever loosen. and -- as Harper7 mentions, a 1/2" forward on both sides should get the job done.

Well that was certainly clear as mud.

I would be comfortable with 285s on 7" rims for road use, but wouldnt want to air down for offroad use. My 7.5" TE rims make me nervous airing down to 20psi even.

You may need to do explaining.
A narrower wheel will hold the tire bead better than a wide one. Also a narrower wheel will have more protection from rocks due to more tire sidewall bulge.

I know guys that run a 315 on a 7" wide wheel and have aired down to 10psi and lower.

It's my understanding that too wide a tire, just as too narrow a tire, will negatively effect the ability to hold the bead.

Also, ballooning sidewalls aren't all that attractive and I believe can be dangerous. And with only anecdotal evidence, I've heard it reduces tread life.

I'd prefer to stick within the width range mentioned by the manufacturer of the tire.

Goodyear I believe recommends 7.5" to 9" wide rims for 285/70/17

Can anybody else with this setup (tt ultimate lift and duratrac 285) comment on their experience? Uca, no uca, installation experience and complications (I.e. brake line or diff issues), and end result? Are the rear springs stout enough to prevent sag while towing a couple hundred pounds of tongue weight? Performance and ride on and offroad?

This is a big decision and want to make sure I measure twice and cut once!
