TPMS Bypass for 5th gens.

I've been doing some research and have not been able to find a thread where someone conclusively found a way to disable the dash light like the 4th gen guys have. It literally took 5 mins on my 2005 to shut it off permanently. There was some speculation that the control module for 5th gens had been integrated into the BCM but I was checking on a Toyota parts website today and found a part # that is almost identical to the 4th part that we used to shut off the light. It has the same name and it's listed under the TPMS section. It's cold and dark out now but I'm going to spend some time tomorrow looking under the dash for it. Hopefully there will be a way to easily ground out a wire and disable the light for those of us that don't want to deal with the hassle of the sensors. If anyone has figured this out and I somehow missed it in my search, please fill me in.

I would like to look at a wiring diagram and do some research on this myself. Maybe I can dig one up online somewhere and figure something out.
 
Don't see why it wouldn't work?

The only real difference between the 2004-2005, 2006-2009, and 2010+ TPMS modules is that the 2006+ have an additional terminal for a Tach signal (why I have no idea... but the diagram shows it...), otherwise beside the Tach signal wire changing colors from '06-'09 to '10+ the module wire colors remain the same.

So theoretically you should still be able to ground out the ID (Pink wire with a Black tracer) wire to ground and have the light remain off. But on the 5th gens, the TPMS module is located somewhere behind the driver's side knee-airbag unit. The location diagram wasn't entirely useful in that regard, but it looks to be stuck somewhere left of the steering column in that general cluster-f*** of an area.

Never really understood what was so hard about keeping your tires aired up to keep the light off?

There are more than a few of us who left the sensors in the factory wheels when we went aftermarket. I for one didn't feel like spending $200+ for a new set of sensors. Besides, I have driven most of my life without the benefit of a TPMS system. I still eyeball all 4 tires as I walk up on the vehicle. The light no longer bothers me but I can understand it could be a distraction for some.
 
Not to be a smartass, but the easiest way to turn out the light is to pony up for the sensors in the second set of wheels. Ya, $200 hurts, but buying a brand new vehicle and having a stupid warning light on the dash was not going to fly for me — too many of my old cars had that when I was young. And disabling the idiot light won't help in that rare instance when you didn't notice a tire going down.

My tires stay at the correct pressure. I just left the sensors in my factory wheels. I could switch them over or I could afford to buy a new set, I just don't want to. Thank you though for an idea of where to look for the module. I'm just surprised that in 5 years of 5th gens, no one has bothered to do it yet.

How about installing a toggle switch on the ground wire?

This would give you options.

The VSC light is dangerous in my opinion. Lol. The last thing People need when They are out of control is another distraction to avert their eyes and attention to. A robot arm to slap people up side of the head would work better.
 
Why not move the sensors to the new wheels?

They are part of the valve stem and prone to damage when removed for a swap. It can be done but that possibility still exists. Even if only one is damaged they are $60 - $70 a pop.

I will also add that when I initially did the wheel/tire upgrade my plan had been to run the factory setup until I KNEW I was going to be playing off road, swap for the weekend, and then swap back for daily driving. That plan failed when my retired parents 07 Pathfinder needed a new set of tires that just happened to be the same size. So I now have a set of nekkid factory Trail wheels with TPMS in them. And my parents have an almost new set of Dunlops.

I'm with you that tire sensors are very good to have but you are making the assumption that it's the idiot light or nothing...

Stock TPMS problems:
1) Some of us use these off road and air down. I'd like to know if I get a flat when I'm doing these activities. Right now the sensor is just on the whole time.
2) Some of use steelies for our winter tires. That's 10 sensors to replace when the batteries go, plus reprogramming.
3) What about when I'm pulling a trailer? Why buy a second system for the trailer when I could get one that monitors both for the same price?
4) What if the idiot light only comes on after I get to an unsafe pressure for the conditions? Speed limit on parts of I-20 is 80 MPH and summer temps in the low 100s. The idiot light seems to come on at about 20 PSI. Silly to ruin your tires/have a wreck because Toyota went cheap.

So I could buy programmable sensors for about $50/each with shipping plus another $40 for programming, but why? Instead I could get an aftermarket system for less that tells me the actual pressure and allows me to switch my tires out whenever I want, it also allows me to run more tires so that I can monitor a trailer if I'm pulling one, not to mention giving me more warning than a dash light.

Hmmm... I wonder... Can we order TPMS sensors with the SAME sensor ID or a sensor that can be programmed with our current ID? I looked a while back but had not found anything... I'm currently running Blizzaks on stock Trail rims. But, I have a spare set of Trail rims waiting for summer tires...
 
You could have a tire loose pressure and the tpms will not pick it up for 15 minutes or more. I do not have tpms in my off road wheels and tires. My stock tires and wheels are in the garage. With the off road tires on when the 4runner is in the garage it detects the stock tires tpms and resets the light. I can drive 15 to 20 minutes before the 4runner detects there is no sensors and turn the light back on. I do most my local running around with no tpms and no light. You would think the system would detect a low tire sooner than that.
 
Hmmm... I wonder... Can we order TPMS sensors with the SAME sensor ID or a sensor that can be programmed with our current ID? I looked a while back but had not found anything... I'm currently running Blizzaks on stock Trail rims. But, I have a spare set of Trail rims waiting for summer tires...
I have read somewhere (on here) that sensors can be cloned. I'd like to go that route too, but I currently just ask the dealer to input the new codes when I go for an oil change at the start of a new season. Cost me $11 last visit. I swap out my winters and summers myself. Keep the codes on a sheet I hand to the service tech.

Agree that a more robust system is required - especially after seeing Ford's new system on the F-150.
 
Something to point out since it seems there its still misinformation about this.

-Typical threshold pressure before the lamp is set is about 27~28psi
-The batteries in the sensors last about 5~10yrs (How many devices do you own that last that long on a single battery?)
-The above range varies because below 27psi the sensor communicates far more frequently than its usual ping rate, this drains the battery.
-Pacific makes our TPMS Sensors, you can buy them cheaper than Toyota units and they program fine ( which you can do with a cheap eBay TIS TechStream)
- I have heard about sensors threat can be programmed with duplicate IDs, but I have not seen them personally, it was just a rumor I heard and have not gotten around to verifying.
- According to Toyota some models had switchable TPMS units that stored two sets of IDs for winter tires. Judging by the fact that we use roughly the same TPMS module for a lot of Toyotas, it may be possible to use a Dual Set TPMS in place of the factory unit ( would need to research this.)
 
Doesn't Lexus allow for eight codes? Why can't Toyota do the same? Eight codes will allow 90 per cent of users to run with two sets.
In Quebec, Canada, the law requires winter tires. How can Toyota not allow for two sets? It's criminal, I say, criminal!
Added thought: if Lexus does allow eight, is there any way to add that interface to the lesser Toyota?

Don't know about typical but my tires were at 22 PSI per gauge pressure and I didn't have a light...

The only person who told me it doesn't hold more than 5 was the guy at the desk at the dealer.... So maybe they do?

Same here. Mine were down to 25 the other day and no light. I don't trust them at all. They are great however in my wife's mini-van as it's stopped her from driving around on a COMPLETELY FLAT tire a time or two.
