Seeing as I took two years off of school to take care of my dad when he was sick with stage 4 cancer, and crushed his 23 individual medications two times a day for his feeding tube along with driving over 40k miles in 2009 for his doctors appointments.. Along many other things that I don't feel comfortable disclosing on a Toyota owners forum... I can totally understand my dads reasoning for embracing my car interests. While it's a little extreme, you also only live once.

Enjoy the x5 man! I love my 4R, but really miss my bimmer. They are incredible vehicles. Over the next few years I'll be able to pickup a used M5 (or new if the economy improves and keep the 4R for tailgating / times when I need an SUV or off-road capability.

I'm sorry if it offended you that she had a beach car. It was a 1973 FJ40 that she bought for 5,000.00 to take my brother and I out to Big Sur and Santa Cruz. We later sold it for a 1975 "commander" RV- I'm going to say the the LC was much less scarier with her driving on highway 1 but as a single mom, she played the both parent role well as far as bringing us to the outdoors. You don't know me, or my family or our past. Don't judge buddy.

While BMW's are nice for the time of the warranty, after it ha, good luck keeping it on the road! The 4R is in a completely different class. Glad you got something that suited your needs, but its a BOF SUV, handling isn't going to be good, neither are the brakes. German cars may have nice quality & everything, but reliability is a complete joke. If you couldn't tell, I hate German cars after the warranty runs out.

You guys are exaggerating the reliability issues w/ "German cars". Mercedes has issues no doubt, but BMW has a decent record. I know several people with high-milage BMW's that have had zero-to-minimal issues. They're not as good as a Toyota or Honda, but it's not like you see BMW's littering the side of the freeway. Besides, the OP doesn't seem like he plans on keeping the X5 (or any car for that matter) for the long-haul, so reliability issues don't really come into play.

Right, BMW has a really good record.. that is why you are more likely to find an installer ready to put custom sound system or EMS into a Lambo rather than BMW..:hiding:

I know a few guys with BMW and Mercedes that have rolled over 100 and 200K.. I also know a great number of people who are bringing the above mentioned vehicles to the shops I work with. Religiously.

Cars have gotten better, but they still are not reliable.
Besides, have fun changing oil on a BMW... or brakes.. and keep it affordable.:hiding:

Enjoy your X5, my wife has one and we love it. Its a huge difference driving the X5 over the 4runner. As much as I enjoy the 4runner, i still get a smile on my face when I beat the snot out of my wifes X5. Drive it hard, its alot of fun. And dont let all the negative comments get to you, its the internet....who cares what other people think.

To each his own, not the decision I would have made, but as long you like it, that's all that really matters. I just hope you put more research into this purchase than you did into the T4R so you're not in the same position with the BMW in a few months.

heh.. x5s are awesome. I really like them.. But owning one is.. well, it is a brave thing.
Seeing all these Bimmers in the shops I work with is quite unsettling, and once warranty is out, you're in for the world of pillage and pain.

+1 I have friends on both sides of that fence....the ones who got lemons paid dearly.....and the dealers have no pity...after all "it's a BMW" and "if you can't afford it get a Toyota". The T4R is really not in the same class as an X5. Expecting the same performance is really silly IMO. Best of luck with your choice. You will enjoy it.

I know 3 guys who would beg to argue with you and after owning an X5 will never park a BMW in their driveway again. After watching them go ballistic...I won't buy one.

no need to be getting all defensive. I pointed out the fact that you danced around.. cost of ownership and low reliability. tis all.

the way I see it, larger BMW are just not cost effective.. I mean, really, I ran against and beat a more than a couple m3s in my old car. My set up was worth way less than what those owners paid for theirs, and I had less problems with mine.

The cost of their normal brakes got me a 6pt BBK..etc. Cost of motors/trans... i'm not even going there.

I love the way they look, but owning one, not having a bank in Cayman islands makes no sense to me.
