You have to be happy with what you own. 315hp/350tq would be fine with me for towing but an Edge has a Class II hitch and lacks a plug-n-play 7 pin on the rear and under the dash wiring for a brake controller. It has the power to tow over 3500lbs but doesn't have the frame or the wiring for it.

Not a fan boy, just practical and like to get what I paid for. Fords are garbage from fit and finish to general engineering components. Absolutely the tech in them is great and some cleaner looking features, but from a maintenance standpoint from a longevity standpoint they are complete junk. I only know this from...working in service at the Dodge/Chrysler/Ford dealership and also managing the body shop for these 3 dealership and doing warranty recalls in copious amounts.
While the 4runner may be overkill for the OP and doesn't need the body on frame large SUV, I do agree with the others on the Subaru reference. Wife has a 13 Forester mother in law has a 16 Outback. Both were completely opposed to Subaru until they just for the heck of it decided to take them for a test drive. The Subaru forester has some pep in it when you stomp the non-turbo edition and a cavernous interior. Being 6'3 and still having half a foot of head room above me is huge, as well as the back seat. You can scoot all over town driving like a bat out of hell and it still will average 28mpg. Thats impressive for an awd vehicle period.
The Outback is one of the most comfortable and practical road tripping vehicles. As others have pointed out the indoor cubic footage swallows pretty much anything you can throw at it. The reclining rear seats make even longer road trips complaint free. Also with more ground clearance than a Grand Cherokee and again paired with the symmetrical AWD these things are pretty hard to beat. All of these capabilities and still averages 29-31mpgs makes it an easy sell.................obviously.
But glad you got rid of your 4runner and into something you enjoy. After all you are the one that has to drive it. :clap2:

I can't believe the Ford Edge is being discussed in the same thread as the T4R. Perhaps next someone could chime in with a T4R/Bently shootout.
No real point of comparison between the Outback and the 4Runner, but my wife has a 2017 6 cylinder Outback and I really do like the thing. I mean, a lot.

Actually you're right! Compared to a 4runner, the Ford edge experience is pretty exciting since it offers "What will break today" roulette.
