Man this is an old thread! Are people actually looking for Trail running boards? My '16 TEP came with them installed for which I paid a bunch but I hate them. If I could sell them, I MAY be able to talk the wife into taking them off "her" truck and going with a slider with a step.

They all mount in the same holes.

Different models have different plastic trim pieces that hang down different amounts below the rocker panels. All Trail, TRD Pro, and late SR5 (2014+) models have narrow plastic trim. All Limited and early SR5 (2010-2013) models have wide plastic trim. The wide plastic trim also has a metal bracket with metal braces bolted to the rocker panel.

Running boards and rocker slides for the wide trim have to hang lower down to miss the plastic, or else you have to cut the plastic for it to fit. The wide board brackets nest inside the existing trim brace pieces. The boards on my SR5 hang down farther than the frame and are almost lowest points under the vehicle.

You can put the low-hanging running boards on a model with narrow trim, but there will be an air gap between the bottom of the plastic and the top of the running board. The boards look like they are floating way below the vehicle which looks wierd. Also the brackets may not connect perfectly because the trim brace pieces won't be there.

Your 2016 SR5 has the narrow trim and needs the high-mount running boards. My personal recommendation (based on experience) is that if you ever have any thought to ever going off-road you should skip the running boards and go straight to structural rocker slides for protection. Hey everyone, my dealer installed the OEM Running Boards (the fixed, OEM ones) on my Limited (I opted for the fixed than the automatic running boards), and something doesn't feel right about the way they were installed.

Feels like there is only enough room for 1/3rd of my shoe (or just my toes and the ball of my feet) to step on, and it's not like my shoes are Shaq sized.

Anyone know if there is a way to have the boards to extend out a bit further?

Correct. The Trail running boards will not physically fit on your 2012 Limited unless you either cut or replace your trim pieces.

As a follow-up thought, it's possible the running boards themselves are the same between models, but the brackets are longer for the Limiteds and early SR5's. Not sure about that, though.

Yes I'm starting to believe the Limiteds need an extension bracket to fit the rigid OEM boards. Feels like the only way I can get my feet to not slip on the boards is if position it sideways.

So there seems to be two stock types of the rigid black running boards- the ones with the 90 degree plastic wall that somewhat covers the gap under the rocker...





And then these that have the holes at the horizontal to vertical transition....


Which ones are what? SR5 vs Trail??

I believe the ones with the holes are pre-2012 or pre-2013. Also the door handle being black rather than red in that photo looks like the older style 5th gen. For newer sr5 and trail the OEM running boards are the ones in the first photo. The dealer tried to order the OEM running boards for my 2016 trail since no trails in my region have running boards and received the ones with holes that I didn't want and to get the correct OEM running boards they said they could only order the individual parts for the boards which was over $1000, and based on the information I could find online at that time was correct. So I bought them from someone that removed the boards from their 4runner right after they bought it.

If you want the the ones with the holes the part numbers are earlier in this thread, but if you want the newer ones I believe you have to buy them used or pay big money.

Amazon has these(with the slots) and only list them as fitting the Trail, but not SR5 and Limited, so they seem like the correct ones. You mention these are the "old" style, so maybe these are the remaining old style Trail stock?

One apparently fits better with minimum gap, the other folks say have a bigger gap. Which is which remains a mystery. I do know boards meant for trail fit differently than what the SR5 and Limited get, because the Trail editions and Pro have a different lower rocker cover trim apparently...

Same reason you go look at Shrockworks sliders and if you want them for the SR5 or Limited, you also have to buy additional "Trail edition"rocker trim. Trail and Pro are already set to bolt right on. This may be the reason Trail and Pro running boards are a different part versus the SR5 and Limited.

Wife finally called me out after two weeks of not realizing I removed the running boards. She needs them back on. Can't quite pull the financial trigger on sliders yet and I really dislike the chrome runners I have from my Limited. What I want to do is get a set of the Trail Rigid running boards as I like how the tread pattern matches the rear bumper sill and they are all black (I have plasti-dipped/Painted most of the chrome on my truck). Of the couple of parts breakdowns I was able to see, it looks like they can sort of be disassembled? Has anyone modified these to fit a Limited? I was thinking I could find a set from someone who has swapped them out and change out the hardware/mounting brackets from my running boards to accommodate my wider rocker panel?

Thought I'd check in to see if anyone has done this before I become a guinea pig and waste my time and money. TIA
