On my iPhone I use MotionX GPS for trail riding and hiking. If you're traveling where there is no cellular coverage you have to download the maps so they reside in phone memory. You can then run in airplane mode to save battery power; only the GPS receiver is active. Get the app and play with it to learn how to select and download the map info you'll need for your area of interest. If you download maps with very great detail the download time is long. Sometimes many hours. I download maps overnight.

I also use the Avenza maps app.

I also use Gaia GPS on iPhone and iPad and because of that, I bought the cellular version of the new iPad Pro though I never enabled data. It works great for off-road maps where there are no cell signals.

What are you having trouble with? Have you tried the website?

I'm using the website. I might of got it now, but I'm trying to make a route and it just seams clunky. I'm trying to map out a small portion of the Georgia traverse, while drawing the route it keeps taking me way out of the way that i want to go. I ended up just making a mark or two every mile it felt like. Also i cant figure out how to edit the middle of the route, half the time it routes from the end all the way to the point I'm trying to move.

the main thing is to try different map backgrounds, not all map backgrounds will follow paths and you can also try switching from driving to walking (some small trails it will recognize as a hiking trail even though it shows up as a road on a FS or another map). I can't remember which maps do routing, I usually switch between the FS maps and the Gaia and try to do as much as possible on the Gaia background.

Also, if you're doing a really long route it's better to break it up then put them all in a folder. I've noticed when you go to edit a point, if it's a really long route it can take a while to recompute and really slow you down, but if it's short it will let you drag a point no problem

I use Gaia as well. A 5 year membership is pretty cheap and allows you to download maps ahead of time, for areas that won't have cell service. The route tracking feats is pretty sweet too.

I am using gaia gps app on a 128gb wifi only ipad mini. I am able to download and save maps and routes to it before I leave on a trip and save them on the device so that I do not need any sort of wifi connection during the trip. I use a garmin glo bluetooth gps reciever to send a wireless gps signal to the ipad to show my current location on the saved maps. Each map has the choice of several overlays. These include topo maps, satellite image, forrest service maps etc. its very detailed and foolproof when set up correctly. There are also many options during use like recording your track...setting waypoints...etc. i used the set up for the first time to travel the georgia traverse and it worked flawlessly. I had a saved track that had been published online at Georgia Overland and saved that. I added waypoints to mark where I camped and where cell service was available. Ill be doing that trip again in May so I am set to go as far as navigation. The only new thing I will add is some sort of ram mount.

What are people using for trail runs? Is there something that uses your entune as I am struggling to find a use for that.

I have been using all trails as it seems to pick up all the fire roads and some trails. But it keeps having to be woken up.

Just looking for something simple that will show the trail we’re on and stays awake.

Thanks

Just to loop back, the Gaia app is great. Has anyone used the funtrek app? I think it's a companion app for the books.
