Very cool video, scary to think about. Can't believe how it kept blowing tires!

I can attest though, our XC90 feels much more stable than my 4R, it's not even close. The salesman that we bought it from claimed that with all the safety stuff on it, that it "wouldn't roll" in a situation like that. Now, clearly if you drove off a ditch it would roll, but in a normal evasive maneuver, the car will react quick enough to apply brakes where needed fast enough to keep the car from rolling over. I argued with him for a while, just to be a pain. But, honestly I just hope I never have to find out.
 
That's surprising about the Jeep really, I would venture to guess that an Mercedes ML class would do a hell of a lot better than that and they both share a lot of suspension components. Even when the Jeep had its programming adjusted, weight added it still did not much better. The video of the Hilux is rather surprising as well, I wonder if the truck bed vs. SUV frame would make any noticable difference?

Honestly, I think a stock 4th gen would do somewhere between the VW/Volvo & Jeep, maybe get a wheel a hair off the ground. What I am most worried about is how the ABS/Trac system will take such a manuever. I occasionally throw my '04 V8 4WD Sport around a sharp left corner when I leave work sometimes and I am often caught off guard when the Traction Control tries to force the vehicle to not slide, it causes the vehicle to rock in a fashion that makes me think it would roll over easier than if it was left to slide out a little.

Not trying to beat on the 4Runner, but I think it also depends on the driver. The Traction Control system is designed to prevent or minimize loss of traction, when sometimes the best course would be to go into a controlled slide.
 
Honestly the 4runner does very well at stock height. With the ABS/trac on however only thing I really notice is that it cuts throttle to much for my tastes on the track. Unplugged its far better. I would imagine being lifted that the weight transfer would progress at a far worse rate than stock height. plus when you add in the taller tires coming from the lift and I would see it could be unsettling when you put in those situations.
 
I live out in the county so deer crossings are a daily occurring event in my neck of the woods. With the many times I've had to dip and dodge the unpredictable SOB's I can def tell you this..

With traction control on working properly and stock suspension (back before i lifted)..

right at the last minute making a hard turn to the left all the weight of the vehicle gets thrown to the passenger front right tire, which some of the load is then transferred across the stabilizer bar to the driver front tire essentially causing the front end to hunker down. Then as you through the steering wheel back right to get back into your lane all the load transfers smoothly across the sway bar to the driver side and the back right tire remains on the ground. The tires never slid or broke traction so the VSC never kicked in.(55mph)

during the same maneuver all the weight is immediately thrown to the front right tire, after making the hard right turn back towards your lane the load somewhat violently lunges to the drivers front tire, the back right tire loses all weight loads and breaks traction, then the driver's rear tire breaks traction. the VSC then cuts your throttle and applies brakes to the rear wheels individually allowing you to counter steer to get back straight. once traction is grained you have your throttle and brake control back.

same effect as before however instead of the VSC cutting throttle and applying brakes...

once you cut back right to get back into your lane and the rear tires break traction you get started into a slide, back end cuts out left then you counter steer to control the slide, then the weight gets thrown back to the other side of the vehicle causing the rear to slide out in the other direction slightly then you counter steer once more an you got it lol..

just my experiences.. I always recommend to people though if you have a deer jump in ront of you its safer to hit the dear than to try and avoid it. plus the insurance company isnt going to cover you hitting a telephone poll or rolling your vehicle after swerving off-road under comprehensive... that would be a collision with driver at fault
 
I had a moose jump in front of my 95 4Runner. I didnt try to swerve. Luckily I was only doing 35mph. Drove home with a broken headlight, dented hood, cracked grill, and bent radiator support.
 
The funny thing about the title is that new Jeep sucks off road too. Fully independent suspension and lack of a real frame. Just proves how bad it is, I don't care how smooth the leather interior is...
