This is the Green Grenade. My 1997 3rd gen SR5. Ill start with a little background information about this build. Before I turned 16, I bought this 4runner from my next door neighbor as my first car. I paid him $1250 cash and promised to mow his lawn for free for the summer. Luckily for me, he ended up moving not too long after I bought the car. After I bought the car, I had absolutely no money to put into it to be safe to drive. It had extremely bald tires, and needed some basic maintenance. I drove it to my fathers office and let it sit in his parking lot for 6 months while I saved up to buy a new battery and some tires. I had no plans for this car whatsoever other than to put a massive sound system in and some AT tires and drive it to school. Little did I know what I was getting into owning a 4runner.
My good friend in high school was a big jeep guy, and with knowing him, I was invited one day to go out with him and go "off-roading." This was completely new to me and I had no clue what I was doing or where I was going. We went to Weston Pass near Leadville and attempted to do it as he said it was an easy trail. It was early in the season and after getting a few miles up, we hit snow. I, being a dumb 16 year old kid with AT tires and 4Low thought it would be a good idea to try and drive through it. This was not a good idea. I ended up getting stuck and having to be pulled out by my buddy and his jeep. This hurt. After getting back and posting a photo on my personal instagram page, a guy commented asking if I was involved in any of the Colorado Toyota Facebook groups. I responded I was not and was then added. This opened up a world I never knew existed. From there I went out with many local members, meeting new people, and learning about off-roading and proper gear to have, why to air down, the works. During this time, I stole my parents nice camera and started taking photos of the trips and ended up making an instagram for my 4runner. TrailBoundT4R.
From there. My 4runner has gone through quite a few major transformations. 4 roof racks, 2 front bumpers, 2 rear bumpers, 2 sets of sliders, 2 skid plates, just about everything you could do, I did over again a few times learning throughout everything. Many people knew me because of my old front bumper and I was "that kid with the red front bumper." Today, almost 21. I am finally dialing in this vehicle and making it something I can be proud of.
