Tranny cooler?

I have a 2000 and think I'm going to go with the tru cool 4589.
Does it come with a sending unit,if so what is the best tranny gauge,if not what the best tranny gauge?
I have a mechanical autometer but don't really want to drill and weld a bung in the pan.

I suggest you consider the 4544. It has close to the same specs re GVR and BTU and it is thinner so it fits behind the radiator support bracket. This allowed me to mount it above the bumper behind the grill, close enough to the A/C condensor to benefit from the air draw from the radiator fan. Your 2000's trans temp sending unit is able to provide specific temperature with a scangauge II. Don't know about other gauges. Bought mine online from Advance Auto with discount and free delivery. $120 incl tax. Plug and play simplicity with a bunch of other info, including voltage, fuel trim, coolant temp, mpg, etc.
Terrific piece of equipment.

Trans coolers do not come with sending units. A cooler has nothing to do with monitoring the temperature.

Trans temp gauges come with sending units.
 
Forget mechanical guages and sending units - they leak.

For lots less money ($0-5) you can get an android or apple version of an ODB2 app for your fone. I use "Torque", research this site for other apps. They provide every reading possible from your vehicles CPU. You can configure multiple screens with different types of gauges, different shapes/sizes and so forth - lots of choices and fun. I have been reading a lot on this and just wandering if I should just get a new koyo radiator and plum back like stock or just bypass old radiator and go with the tru cool,it's a 2000 with 101000 miles.

I could be wrong, but I don't think Trans Fluid Temp is sent through the OBD2. You would have to figure out some other way to get that information.

Fair enough. I use the Palmer OBDLink LX with Dash Command. I'll have to go check to see if it works. I would like to monitor trans fluid temp as well since I'm planning on replacing the radiator and adding the B&M 70268 this weekend. I'll let you know what I find out.

Well at least an 01 does, perhaps some of the earlier 3rd gens don't. On my version of Torque, there was more than 1 "trans temp type", so be sure to try them all, giving each one a few moments to start the data transmission. Luck!
 
Is this the right radiator,it says 1998 not A1998?

Yes, that's the right one. Also check RockAuto and Amazon. Also know that Koyo and TYC are the same thing so you might search for both.

99 LTD def capable of providing trans temp via OBD port. I know because I researched the crap out of this and I have a 99 LTD with scangauge II that does this. Earlier years cannot because the sending unit is 'dumb'. Have no idea about other gauges/apps etc.
 
So what about someone with a '96-98 who reads this thread and assumes that based on the "your wrong" statement (which is ironic because it's you're), theirs will also send trans temp info?

They are SOL because you were only addressing the OP?

It's been discussed in many other treads that older 4runners dont have tranny temp sensors so obd reader would be useless for tranny temp

Op have you considered a B&M tranny cooler ?

Yes I have considered te b&m,seems like I'm favoring the 4544 tru cool though.I just don't know if it will cool it as well as stock,every other post says something different.So I'm thinking about buying a scangauge 2 and putting it on in now than installing the cooler and comparing the two,seems like that would be the best option instead of guessing.Im still not sure if I should put in a new radiator after the tru cool install(if it cools as well as stock).

I think you will be happy with the external. My b&m keeps me at least 10* cooler than with the internal cooler.
 
Why do you think you need a new radiator?

Cap the lines for the stock trans cooler and be done with it.
