Well I call my local pos toyota dealer and was quoted 5k for the tranny and install. Think it will be gold plated??
Lol if I were going to spend that I'd definitely be buying another 4Runner.

I would avoid this route unless you like making it rain for your mechanic. I purchased my used trans from Iowa and met the guy halfway or just north of Moberly, Mo. Cost me 425 as the 25 was for core charge. Replaced trans on gravel apt driveway. Landlord was more impressed than pissed (not supposed to work on cars per lease). That was 45k miles ago.3k is a tough pill to swallow for tranny. it's like buying another 3rd gen.
Your torque converter is slipping so your transmission has to work harder to achieve the same task, hence the overheating. However that's based on the assumption that the whine is indeed coming from your transmission. Have you ruled out other possibilities like a water pump mentioned above?
for you guys who cant find yards with parts... Ive used this site numerous times to get engines etc for multiple custom builds with ease. Its a nationwide network of all the junkyards. Super easy to find parts. I found A rated used 3rd gen 4wd trannies for 350.00.
Car-Part.com--Used Auto Parts Market
ha it was my secret site used to buy LS1's etc for drift cars for cheap. Never had any issues contacting and setting up freight. And half the time I found stuff in Las Vegas local to me right on the website. Saved me a day of walking around yards to find our cars.

I guess it depends on how much you have invested in your truck whether it's worth the investment. If you still have a relatively low mileage engine and you've done lots of upgrades to the suspension and other areas of the rig, it's worth spending the money on a transmission.
infamousRNR is in the same situation right now. His transmission imploded last week. It's grinding in gear and doesn't move. We thought it could be the flex plate, but after pulling off the access plate at the bottom of the bell housing, we can see the flex plate spinning. Also, there wasn't any noise while in park, and if it was the flex plate, it would have been making noise in park. As soon as the transmission is shifted into gear, major grinding noise coming from the transmission. We thought it could be the transfer case, but the sound is loudest directly under the transmission.
We discussed the options but agreed going with a rebuilt transmission is the way to go. With a used one, you are taking a huge risk that the previous owner took care of it with regular fluid changes and you're also taking a risk that the seller is being honest about the mileage that was on the vehicle it came out of. it's a huge amount of labor just to find out the used transmission you bought is a piece of crap.
Camelback Toyota sells an automatic transmission rebuilt by Toyota for $2300 and it includes the torque converter. But, Camelback doesn't ship transmissions. We'd have to drive from San Jose, California to Phoenix, Arizona to pick it up and drop off the old one for the core they require. 11 hour drive one way but it just might be worth it. There's another company in New Jersey called IPT Performance that rebuilds them stronger than factory. But, after you pay for the rebuilt trans, rebuilt torque converter and pay for shipping, you're going to be out around $3500.
Here's the link to the one IPT Performance sells:
A340E, A340F, A340E, A341E, A340E and 30-40LE Performance Transmission
Right, I've been following his situation in the other threads.
I know about IPT, wasn't aware Camelback won't ship.
So, are ya'll headed to AZ or what!? Split the drive between the 2 of you each way, and it doesn't sound that bad.
Man now I'm nervous. I just got a 98 4Runner, my first one ever, and it has a whine that goes away when I let off the gas and changes pitch as I accelerate. I was thinking it was coming from the rear diff, but it's hard to tell when you're going 70 down the highway. I guess I'll drive it til it dies.
Block the tires, set the parking brake, and put it in gear. Listen for any whining at the transmission bell housing.
My whine doesn't occur unless I'm actually accelerating. I don't hear it at idle (Doesn't mean it's not there, I just don't hear it). I was originally thinking it might be the diff since when accelerating the gears would be under more load. I'll need to get under it this weekend and try to figure it out.
Update........well, the noise isn't from the tranny. It it's coming from the timing chain cover. So it looks like a new jdm motor is the n my future. 294k so I guess only reasonable.
Anyone have a good job source?? I don't want to get one from the tsunami.
You have a timing belt. Maybe it's just a bearing in a roller or something? Do the timing belt and see what happens.
