Trans rebuilt after Milkshake - warranty claims

hey all

I've had a never ending saga of trans issues starting with what I suspect is the previous owners milkshake. I didn't have any milk shake evidence but the trans went along with the torque convert and the radiator.

Dealership quoted me out $4700 for a re manufactured toyota transmission.

my mechanic quoted out $3600 to rebuild trans mission, replace TQ, and replace radiator. 1 year warranty (maybe 6k miles and 6 mo. left)

It's been back and forth in the shop a few times since then, once to have the valve body replaced again(was slipping out of gear in between 2-3) and once to have a check engine light inspected for TQ failing to lock at 50mph. Both issues were resolved.

I brought the truck back in as it was whining in D and R under acceleration.

Mechanic has broken down the trans again and determined it's probably the planetary gear, which was a remanufactured one from the supplier.

Here are my options - supplier replaces the planetary gear under warranty at no cost, or I get a credit and pay maybe $270 out of pocket for a new planetary gear.

I really don't want to worry or have headaches with this thing anymore and am stuck between buying what I would assume is a better part, vs. just dealing with the rebuilt parts and cross my fingers that whatever is going to fail on the trans does so within the next 6 months and not after that.

Should've gone with Toyota trans.


If it keeps acting up, I would have him either rebuild the whole thing with TOYOTA parts, or refund the money and get the Toyota Trans.

This is why I go with used OEM parts. You can find them good priced from junkyards, ebay, craigslist with pretty low mileage sometimes. I have had so much trouble with non oem rebuilt trans and motors. Only time I ever had any luck is if they where fully built from a reputable shop using only OEM parts and or upgraded aftermarket parts paired with OEM parts. My buddys shop uses only oem parts on all its builds. Most reputable shops know that when building motor/trans you use only the highest quality parts. Its just how it is.

Yeah I usually subscribe to the "buy nice or buy twice" mantra and I may be seeing that be reinforced currently.....

What do you think? Is it worth $300 to replace just the planetary gear with new? Or should I roll the dice with what I've got and get it back out of shop.

Personally if the trans fails again after the warranty is up I would be looking into the junkyard solution.

I would replace with warranty and save the $300. You already put in $3600. so I would roll the dice without spending the $$..Good Luck

Swap it out for a R150 5spd. No more problem with a milkshake. Instead of changing out my slowing dying TC, I am seriously considering doing such.

If not, spend the $300 for the planetary gear and hope for the best. Then search for another A340 for when this tranny goes down again.
