Trans / warrente opinions please

Hey folks,
I bought my 2011 SR5 in Jan w/ 53k. I bought a Toyaota Platimum warrente. I took to local Toy dealer for service. They recommended trans flush. I asked, are you sure... I'd heard bad things about them. Heard is would be bad if f they let fluid get too low. They insisted. She I picked it up and drove home, it slipped gears, stuck and slammed into gear and staked out. Took it back to dealer. They said the trans fluid wasn't filled sufficiently and once they topped it was off it was fine. I'm not comfortable w/ this. I fear due to the tech's negligence my trans sustained excessive wear and damage. They say the computer says it's fine and now that it's topped off it shifts well. I want to keep this 4Runner as long as I can. That's why I paid 2k for Platimum warrente.
What do you folks think? Did they do damage and shorten it's life? Should I try to insist they replace the trans? Any advice or suggestions here?

Well, don't get talked into trans service you don't need.

Go back and get in writing that they did not fill properly. That way in case something happens you're covered hopefully.

You can forget about getting the transmission replaced. However, notes in your service record about them under filling the fluid is a great idea.

philsey, 2011, 57k miles, warrenty = Toyota Platinum 5 additiinal years and 50 aditional K no deductable. I bought it used so honestly don’t know how it was driven or maintained other than it is very clean. When I had B & M trans cooler installed (not at the dealer) I was told the fluid was geting dirty and I should schedule a fluid flush. Whe I explained that to the Toyota service writer (where I bought warrenty)they said yes, it is over due for flush. When I asked if it was safe (as I said I’ve heard horror stories about trans flush, especially if waiting too long & if the tech allows fluid to drop too low), they said it was within the safe to do range & would be the best way to take care of my trans. Further they said they only allow “master techs” to do this.

Seeing that I went in w/ trans shifting perfectly and left w/ it slipping, sticking, slamming into gear and then stalling, and latter to find out it was the tec’s neglagence.... I’m very unhappy to say the least. T
I am hoping to keep this 4runner as long as possible!

They said they ran a "computer trans health check" and no problems or error codes came up, but they also admitted they can't tell if there may be physical wear or damage due to their neglagence.

They did say it was “noted in their records”.

Anyone willing to hazard a guess if they shortened the life of my trans?

Stop worrying, you are covered to ^here^. If it's good that long, you're OK.

They did say it was “noted in their records”.

Get a copy. Do not accept excuses. It's on you to make sure it's documented. EDIT: Also make sure it's posted to your on-line Toyota service file.

Like I said, no one knows.

"Master Tech" my lily-white arse. "Oil Change Tech" would be my guess.

If indeed you bought a genuine TOYOTA ext wty, it's good anywhere. If you ever leave this dealer, and have issues, documentation is important.

reading your posts was beyond painful! :wacko:

its probably fine, make sure it is documented. If you have any issues, don't hesitate to return and get that documented as well.

the flush is done with first a pan removal and a filter change or cleaning. then the flush is done.
reason they did not fill properly is they would have to wait for the trans fluid to cool down so they can set the level proper.

could be they put too much fluid in that would create air bubbles which acts like low fluid as well.

you need the service record stating that they did not properly fill the trans . If the trans is damaged in a few K miles it will fail.

When I bought my used 2002 4Runner I got the warranty on it as well. The trans fluid was almost black after about two months. I took it in and paid to have it flushed. Ran great for about a month, then started with the same slamming into gears and bad shifts. Limped into the dealer stuck in 2nd gear and they said it was a goner. Fought with them about the warranty and ended up getting them to replace it with a little out of pocket.

Make sure it is all documented and you should be OK.
Call Toyota directly and note what happened, you'd be surprised what Toyota might do. They made the dealership pay for half of a rebuilt trans from Japan and ate the labor to install it and a rental car for me for the 3 weeks it took to get the transmission.

Yup, had them write it up, post it on the Toyota service history & print it out for me.
