Transfer case help - its hitting my skid???

So I began to develop a rattle in my truck. My transfer case seems to have begun to move down so it is now hitting my savage skid plate. To solve the problem quickly I added some washers so it is no longer hitting the skid plate.

Is there some type of mounting plate to the transmission on the transfer case that I could check to see if it needs to be repaired??? I am baffled as to how the transfer case could have moved over half of an inch downward to start hitting the skid.

Thanks guys

Dave

Make sure you remove the little factory skid on the tcase if there is one

It is already gone and it is what started this whole adventure. So with my old Savage skids I had started to hear an undiagnosed rattle. Finally when I pulled off my old Savage skids I discovered the factory skid on the transfer case hanging by only one mount. All of the others had broken off. The rattle had been caused by the transfer skid swinging against my Savage skid.

When I put on my new updated Savage skids I had no issues for the first few weeks and then I began to hear a rattle again. The transfer case was rubbing against the new aftermarket skids. For now I temporarily solved the issue by adding three washers to all four of the mounting points to lower the new skids a quarter of an inch.

Maybe the transfer case on the Limited is bigger than on the SR5 models??

Mine is extremely close. After wheeling it flares up. I have had to remove it a few times and bend back the other way but it has always protected my tcase. I think I also have a quarter inch on the back bolts and all of my mounts are good

I have the same problem on my Limited. But it happened from day one with the Savage skids. I had to put a 1" spacer at the back of the skid to keep it from contacting. I replaced the transmission mount (also called the rear motor mount), and now I can get away with a 1/2" spacer. Tried a 1/4" spacer, and it wasn't enough.

I don't like the idea of the transfer case being so close to the skid even with the 1/2" spacer, so I'm not done yet. I guess new motor mounts are next, but those are a LOT more work to replace, as described in this thread If that doesn't work, then I guess I will need to modify the Savage skid, by either cutting out a section and lowering it, or more likely by bending it down right under the TC, which will require cutting a small wedge in the side gussets and the welding.

When I put on my new updated Savage skids I had no issues for the first few weeks and then I began to hear a rattle again.
What is this updated skid you are talking about? I bought mine last summer.

Some people will tell you to avoid this, but I like it.

I'm running a BudBuilt Clocking ring on my Runner right now. It clocks the t-case 10-15*. IDK if Bud still makes them, but give him a call and see.

You're going to need to run a 2" BL, or cut a hole in floor board underneath the seat in order to get it to clear the body.

You're also going to have to modify your shifter, but Bud should have the plans for that as well.

You're going to want to make sure that you've got some "Right Stuff" gasket sealer as well.

I've had two issues with mine, both from me not checking things.

One was the fact that I couldn't shift into 4L, but a SMALL amount f trimming with a Dremel on the t-case adapter took care of that.

The second was I broke a couple of the bolts when I went wheeling, because I didn't have them tight enough.

I'm not going to lie to you, getting it on is a bit of a PITA, but it increases your ground clearance, and will help with your issues you're experiencing.

Keep in mind, IF you raise the transmission, you run the risk of breaking it, because it's not inline with the motor. This happened to my brother. He made a crossmember, like mine, lifting the trans 1.5", but DIDN'T raise his motor. His transmission grenaded on him going down the interstate.

Here's some Pics of the Clocking ring. It bolts to the t-case, then to the t-case adapter. You need to drill out a few holes on the t-case adapter to make it work.

The hole I had to cut and box.

Here, you can see my flat belly. Notice how the t-case doesn't stick out from under the frame rails, compared to the earlier picture.

The reason I still have the mounting locations for the stock crossmember is because that's what the gas tank bolts onto. I need to get to working on my custom tank again, unless I can find a way to lift the tank as High as I want it.

Vibrations and drone after Savage skid combo installed

:bump2:

I am posting in this old thread because I seem to have the same or similar issue. After installing my new Savage skid combo I took it for a drive down the street and noticed once I started to get up some speed, over 20 mph, I could hear a noticeable drone and felt a vibration. I turned it around and parked it as I was set to go out of town the next day. It was dark and I couldn't see any real obvious problem.

It seems that some diagnosed the problem being the cheap transfer case skid, while others simply added washers to the mounting locations to give it the required clearance to silence the rattle.

Where should I start here? Is this a fairly common issue with these?

I have the same issue with my Savage Skids. Not sure what I'm going to do to fix the issue.

I just finished getting mine powder coated and installed. I took off the stock transfer case skid. If you need or want more clearance use fender washers at the 4 mounting points of the skid. I have plenty of clearance now and no vibrations

You both should contact Savage. This can happen due to differences in 4runner models/drive types. But try to first remove the OEM transfer case skid (2 bolts), because the OEM skid decreases the clearance to the Savage skid.

For me, with my 2000 Limited (with the multimode transfer case, which puts the transfer case lower, probably the same for 2001-2 models.) I found that replacing the original transmission mount with a new OEM unit raised the transmission and thus decreased the transfer case contact with the Savage skid, but did not eliminate it in all conditions.

Pretty sure the multi-mode transfer case is larger than the older ones. I just removed a 99 transfer case and it looks bigger than the one on my 98, so the clearance issues make sense. There's not a single poster in here with a 96-98 complaining about clearance.

But I wish I had multi-mode :( next time...
