Transfer case lube.

Chalk me up as another victim of 2 dealerships having no idea of, nor carrying the spec'd TC oil. The one place stated they use non-LS 75w-90 gear oil. Guess I'll order the Synchromax from Royal Purple and try that.

If the gear oil was an issue would we not be seeing lots of Toyota transfer case failures if all the dealers seem to be using it?
 
Transfer case oil 75W

I made the mistake of buying Genuine Toyota Differential Fluid, 75-90W, when I thought I was getting 75W transfer case oil. It came in a metal can like the one shown in a post above but it was the wrong formula oil. I had the job done before I realized my mistake. I've been running it for about 1000 miles so far with no noticeable change.

I'll be looking for the right stuff next time I change the transfer case oil.

I strongly recommend running the vehicle in 4 Lo for a mile or so before changing the front differential oil. I did this on a straight paved street in front of my house without turning the wheel and had no problems. I made a U-turn once at very slow speed and had no issues with tire skipping. The front diff oil came out very dark after only 27000 miles so stirring up the differential oil before changing it made a big difference in the dirt I got out of the case. Most people report seeing clean oil coming out of the front differential.

I have not changed my fluid yet but when I do it will be the Toyota fluid. On my 4th gen I changed the transfer case fluid to Mobil 1 synthetic. Shortly after I had a leak at the actuator seals. It started out as a slow leak and got much worse. This is a $2500 fix. It may not have been caused by the Mobil 1 but who knows. This was one of the reasons I traded my 4th gen on my 2014. Not taking a chance on my 2014. My 4th gen only had around 40k miles when this happened.
 
Just curious, do y’all fill it to the fill hole or do you add the amount specified? I ask because every time I fill to the fill hole it’s more than listed in manual and I don’t wanna overfill it
 
Any more reviews of the Ravenol MTF-3 in their TC? The wife's Limited has over 60K miles and I'm thinking it's time to do a change, but it's hard to justify the cost of the Toyota fluid.

I could certainly justify it if using anything other than the Toyota juice would cause damage but, with the number of dealers and shops that don't use it, I remain skeptical that it's necessary.

Fill it to the hole. Every casting on the transfer case is slightly different.
 
Manual calls for 75W straight. I had 75W-90 Royal Purple in there and did not like how my 4WD was shifting in/out. Switched to $$$$$Toyota can of gold and works perfecly again. Who knows, maybe it is just a placebo effect.

[MENTION=42864]KP Texan[/MENTION] - I just changed my Transfer case with Ravenol MTF-3 at 87K and drove 3000 miles to Missouri and back. I haven't felt any difference in the shifting in and out of 4wd and I did not notice any impact on MPG. I am running Redline 75W85 GL-5 in the from and rear diff.

Amsoil 75W-90 since 54K when I got it. Changed once soon after acquisition and again at 95-100k. 110k now, no issues at all.

The problems of where to apply them lie with the auto manufacturers, where, for example, Toyota specifies in their owner’s manual, their SAE 75W without defining the rest of it. Oil sales people will sell you 75W-90, but what Toyota is really asking for is 75W-85 without sulfur/phosphorous. From the comments I receive, a standard SAE 75W-90 GL-4 does cause hard shifting and grinding in these Toyotas in 70oF weather.”
