Weird situation going on with my 4Runner. I'll start from the beginning, hopefully no one gets confused.
Recently on my 7 mile commute (city driving to and from work), usually nearing the end of my journey, my truck shakes violently (almost as if I have a flat tire), and a I get a distinct smell of something burning, but I can't put my finger on what the smell is or what is giving off that smell. This phenomenon might happen once every week but only for 30 seconds. When it happens, the transmission doesn't drop out of O/D, but the O/D clutch locks up and the rpms jump from 1900-2000 to 2200-2350.
Fast forward to today, I'm driving an hour home from my parents. About 5 miles from my parents on some country roads, this phenomenon takes place, but does so for an extended period. Nearly 10-14 miles. During which my ATF Temp neared 208*F, and my Water Temp hit about 211*F. My ATF Temp usually is never higher than 150 except in the summer. For what it's worth, today was the first day over freezing (39*F), and the first day I haven't had the heater on in a while. I pulled off, and shut the truck down, fearing a milkshake. I pulled the transmission dipstick, but found the fluid to be a darkish red, like ATF should be. No indication of a milkshake. I could smell the same burning smell I usually get after the shaking events happen, but I couldn't figure out where it was coming from. I fired the 4Runner back up, and it was like it was back to normal, ATF was at 160, Coolant at 200. I got on the freeway, 72mph, the Trans cooled down to 145-150 like normal and the Coolant went down to 202, which is it's usual number.
I hope I didn't confuse anyone, but I really just don't get what happened. Regardless, I am ordering a Transmission Cooler today. This was a close call.
