Transmission Cooler Is The Sufficient Enough?

Hey ive been reading alot about this milkshakes on the fourms and i think i would be better off getting these in mine now cause both my 4runners are high mileage and i think they have original raditors so its a ticking time bomb and i figerd getting these now would be way cheaper then doing a transmission swap. Ive done 2 swaps on my 99 taco i had and it is'nt fun. I found these on ebay there called HAYDEN brand here if it works i will probly get 2 of them for both runners

I think they're cheaper on Amazon.

I also believe Hayden made the TRD trans coolers... Must be a decent product.

I personally run the B&M 70268. If I did it all over, I would have got a 70264, although I have had no problems. I just think bigger is better. Must be because I'm American.... Or something... :infidel:

There are a few members on here thatbrun Hayden coolers. Not sure which model though. Look atbthe signatures in some threads and then PM them. Or type "Hayden" into the search tool.

I have a question about the tranny cooler thing. Wouldn't it make sense to get a new radiator too even if you choose to get a tranny cooler since the radiator could still fail anyway?

No what im going to do after i get the cooler is block off the inlits for the ATF fluid so if the raditor was to fail it could only leak into the the tranmission cooler tube. Now if u was to leave the tube upluged and it did fail and water would leak out the cooler inlit holes and could cause u to over heat if u didnt catch it in time.

Mike, yes it makes sense to replace the radiator also. It's good measure. Like said above, if you add the cooler you eliminate the possibility of the milkshake. But the radiator is still old and you do run the risk of it failing and the other issues that go with that.

OP - that's the exact make and model I installed this weekend along with a brand new Koyo radiator (installed in series). I posted the quote below in another thread. The tranny definitely shifts smoother now that the fluid is cooler (but like the butt dyno, this could be in my head). Make sure you buy additional tranny line (dedicated line, NOT FUEL LINE) before the install as you'll need a couple extra feet to plumb it - I bought 9 feet and had about a foot or so left over.

When I pulled back in the garage from coming back (a 20 minute drive there, inside for 20 minutes, and a 20 minute return trip) I measured temp using an infrared gun. top of radiator was 84 degrees Celsius, top of tranny cooler (hot side) was 34 Celsius, bottom of cooler was 21 Celsius. Lines were warm to touch only.
