Transmission Cooler

Hi Guys,
OK I have looked and looked and cannot seem to find anything solid on the fluid levels. I am looking at adding a cooler (70264).
I have seen some posts say no additional fluid has been added and others where a half a pint was added. I am not even sure how to check the levels to see how much I would need to add.

So what are you guys doing? Adding or no?

Same here, what I would do is add fluid to fill the aux cooler, cap both ends then attach hoses. Fluid loss to a minimum.
 
So is B&M the go to brand for Transmission coolers? Does adding this effect every day driving in any negative way? I read in an earlier post there might be concern in colder climates... what risk is there running a transmission cooler in colder climates and what are we talking ambient temperature in these colder climates if there is an issue?

The B&M incorporates a "viscous bypass" to allow cold fluid to circulate back to the tranny faster. Not sure if it is total BS, or inadequate in colder climates, but it does give me some piece of mind.
 
Hope this isn't sidetracking the thread, but my Canadian 2014 LE is equipped with a supplemental transmission cooler and, according to Toyota, a transmission fluid temp. gauge. Anyone know where that gauge might be or is it just an idiot light?

It's the idiot light and the transmission cooler that's already in place in the radiator. Same as U.S. models.

I am new to this forum. I have had 2- 4runners. a 2006 and now a 2014. The 2006 was a MUCH better built 4runner. better performance and actually better gas mileage.
Toyota is cheeping out on this car now. The doors don't sound solid when you close them, they have even reduced the towing capacity. I for one am dissapointed in Toyota and likely will not buy another one.

Man I hope not! I have a 15' on order and I hope I don't feel that my 07 was way better! Your scarin me pal.
 
I finally installed the tranny cooler today, it took a couple of hours because I was really anal about everything being right. It was a pretty easy install.

Mounted the cooler pretty much in the center of the radiator. Used the zip ties to mount it, I have used them on numerous vehicles and never had a problem. The fan blows directly onto the cooler from the opposite side.

The factory actually marks the lines (Always double check). The red/pink line is coming from the trans.(Hot) and feeds into the radiator. The blue line is coming out of the radiator (Cooler) and will go into the B&M aux. cooler. The lines in this picture are located on the passenger side of the radiator near the top just under the over flow. Both of the lines feed into the bottom of the radiator.

The two lines pictured here are located on the passenger side of the engine block on the bottom. The red stuff is just some red paint I used to mark the line (Hot Line from Trans.) The line located just above is the return line to the trans. this line is coming from the aux. cooler.

You guys that put in a tranny cooler should check the fluid level at the transmission and make sure it's correct. These sealed transmissions are very particular about fluid level, hence one reason why they are sealed. If I do it, I'll post a video on how to check the fluid at the transmission WITHOUT techstream, and know you are within the the appropriate temperature range.

Everyone adding fluid has good ideas, and it makes sense. But you are guessing at the fluid level in the transmission. Just piece of mind, knowing everything is how it should be.

I added the cooler when vehicle was cold after sitting over night. When I removed the cold return line, I lost about a tablespoon of oil. That accounted for the 13-14 inches of line I took out.

After mounting the cooler, I used a manual pump transfer from the ATF WS bottle, straight into the cooler. I pumped, bled the air, pumped, bled, pumped, until the cooler was full and remaining lines became full up to the point that the line removed. I added just about half a quart. After everything settled, I verified that I had about the same volume of no fluid in the lines, as before starting. This is probably very close to where the level was, but a method to verify optimal levels would be awesome.
 
Here is my .02 cents on the cooler situation for whatever it is worth.

I would not put too much thought or worry into thinking that the fluid temp is going to run too cool for proper lubrication. There's a tremendous amount of trucks etc that run in Alaska for example that are -30 to -50 degrees and this is not an issue. Remember, the cooler is only going to reduce the fluid temp 5 to 10% in most situations. If the transmission was that sensitive to cooler fluid this would be a major problem for millions.

The TH01 and TH02 are not in the pan. They are internal, above the valve body.
ATF Temperature Sensor No.1 and No.2

(1) ATF temperature sensor No.1 (THO1) is used for hydraulic pressure control. This sensor is used for revision of the pressure that is used to apply clutches and brakes in the transmission. This helps to ensure smooth shift quality.

(2) ATF temperature sensor No.2 (THO2) is used as a basis for modifying the ECT shift timing control when the ATF temperature is high. It is also used for the ATF temp. warning light.

I wonder which temp sensor the Scan Gauge pulls from. I would want to know the temp coming from TH02 since it detects the hotter temp of the 2. When you run the live data on a scan tool it will show the temps on both sensors. I have a OBD2 splitter which allows me to hook up 2 devices at one time. I will have to install both and see which one they use.

If the trans cooler from the Tacoma physically fits then I would feel more comfortable using it. I can promise you that the Toyota cooler is built much more durable then an aftermarket type. I.E thicker wall construction, more rigid fins and internal tubing. Take each one apart and compare and you will see what I mean.
 
If you use a scan scangaugeII there are codes to read both sensor temps. I don't recall the codes tho I used
 
They do have the X-Codes for the ATF fluid and I monitor it. The transmission has 2 temp sensors that are in 2 different locations therefor output different temps.
SC only gives you 1 temp to read so that's why I was wondering which one are we reading?

From what I have observed with my Scangauge, the temps will be the same at idle/when not under significant load.

I monitor both temps while towing in the summer heat. The sensor reading in the pan is more consistent, while the temp at the converter sees big spikes under load that return to the pan temp rather quickly.
 
I just completed the installation of a B&M Trans cooler on my 15 SR5P and found the temp check mode to be a bit more difficult to initialize than on my Tacoma.
I did find that with the front of the truck on ramps, I was able to connect a funnel and fill the cooler and slightly over fill the pan without removing the fill plug. This method would also make fluid changes easier.

What are you using to monitor both temps? If you are using the SC then please show me the X-Code for each sensor.

I just did some reading on my TIS and it shows S1 in Linear and S2 is for the Temp warning light.
