Transmission Cooler

I am looking to do this mod over the weekend in preparation for towing my sailboat XC. I too went with the BM 70264 only to discover the inlet/outlet fittings are 5/16. I already purchased extra 3/8 hose and it sloppy loose on the cooler fittings. I know some have purchased a reducer fitting, but for others, has simply tightening the hose clamp over the "flexible" hose worked? From my limited research it seems like the return line PSI is not terribly high, but the consequences of a hose coming off is potentially catastrophic for the tranny. I'm not too keen on introducing more connections from a reducing barb fitting, but I also want to do it right. The alternative is going 5/16 and stretching it over the 10mm hard lines, but that's not ideal either. F, B&M, advertise your damn dimensions properly... Anyone want to help me solve this incredibly difficult first world problem?

I put a B&M 70268 SuperCooler in my Gen 4 about a 100K mile ago, worked flawlessly until a recent trip back east.
We were traveling through Wyoming and it was -22 degrees with a calculated wind chill of -69 at 80mph but everything mechanically with the 4r seemed to be fine. We stopped for the night in Laramie and the next morning we hit the road at -12 degrees. Somewhere between Laramie and Lincoln the B&M developed a crack in one of the cooling channels causing the fluid to spray as a fine mist coating the entire engine and chassis with fluid. Because it was so cold there was no burning smell or smoke from the fluid that could be detected from inside the 4r. It wasn't until we pulled off the freeway at Lincoln that I new something was wrong as the tranny would not shift out of 3rd. We pulled over and popped the hood and had an O S moment.
It was easy to tell the leak originated at the cooler as it was soaked in fluid as was everything aft of it. I called a tow truck and had it towed to a Toyota dealer and had the cooler disconnected and a tranny flush and refill done and we were on the road again.
If it had not been so cold out I am certain the tranny would have been toasted. My guess is 75% of the fluid blew out before I caught it.
As far as the B&M failing,, the only thing I can think of is it got so chilled overnight in Laramie that when the hot tranny fluid hit it the aluminum couldn't take it an cracked. When back home I tested the cooler with and air compressor and a tub of water and it was a pretty catastrophic failure.
I still will put one on my Gen 5 as I tow a 3,000 lb trailer, but will definitely figure out a solution for extreme cold driving.

this 10KLBS cooler worked for me towing a 4KLBS boat in summer up good sized hills . V8 sedan max tow capacity of vehicle was 4KLBS. well I never had any overheating/leaks/or any drive train repairs . easy to install and the only problem I had was I had to cover it in the winter because the tranny fluid cooled down so much the heater would not keep my toes warm . so I used a hard plastic sheet to cover it. worked for many years well over 200K miles.

I almost went with Hayden on my other car, but ended up going with the Derale 9000 series plate and fin. Installation was easy and it's held up great. Fortunately, my T4R came with a tranny cooler and it's holding up well. If any problems, I'll probably get another Derale but may go with the 10000 series stacked plate.

Also after some research I am most likely going with this cooler from C&R racing. High quality and it has 3/8th inch push on barbs so no problems trying to match up the hoses to different sized tubes..Thoughts???

I'm sure that cooler will work fine. Anything is better than stock, and practically all are larger than the ones which come with the tacoma tow package.

If you are confused about the lines going to and from the radiator, they are marked. The one from the trans to the radiator cooler is marked with red marks (hot), the one from the radiator to the trans are marked blue (cool). The lines connect to the radiator on the driver's side bottom. But you can access them from above on the passenger side, that's where i made my connections.

I don't think the barb size was really a big factor for me. It's a quick, cheap fix from the big auto parts stores. I was more interested in overall size and method for cooling...tube/fine, plate/fin, stacked plate, heat sink, etc.

You can usually tell the return line from the radiator because it's the cooler of the two. Go from completely cooled off and then start truck, put her in drive and give her gas while holding the brake. Go feel the lines.

I just installed one of Tru-Cool units. Very impressed with the build quality, we will see how well it cools. I got one of the larger units, 24k BTU, so it took a bit of effort to puzzle it in. Hanging it dead center and using the threaded holes on the radiator support ended up working the best., clean looking and secure.

If you look at the pipes coming from the transmission you will see where they change from metal to the rubber lines. One of the pipes is straight and one has an angle to it towards the end. The angled pipe is the inlet into the transmission. The straight pipe is the outlet. Therefore the outlet pipe is the one going to your inlet on the cooler.

Also if you look on the pass side of the transmission you will see where the 2 pipes go into the unit. They are stacked on top of each other. The lower of the 2 is the inlet, the one above it is the outlet.

Nice install and thanks for the help...It seems most here are installing the size you did and with 20-30+ degree drops in fluid temp 11"x6" looks to be the proper size.

Well from what I found not an issue.

From the manufacturer on cooling regulating.

2014 Trail Premium 4runner

I went to the dealership after I purchased my B&M Transmission Cooler and they assure me that my 4runner comes with a transmission cooler already. I had a look but I can't really see it. I'm not sure if I should return the cooler I bought or not. Do you guys know if it really has one already? I'll be hauling a 4400 Lbs Trailer

Yes it has a built in cooler that is in tandem with the radiator. However, this cooler is like a standard cooler that comes on all cars, it is not like a separate transmission cooler that is being referred to here. The V8 4runners came with a separate trans cooler. I have put trans coolers on many of my vehicles that I use to tow with. I asked the dealer about putting the cooler I bought and they said they would not do it because it voids the warranty. I have not had time yet but I am going to call Toyota Corporate to find out if this is really the case. Needless to say my aux trans cooler is still in the box at this point.

I notice you went with a model with 11/32 fittings instead of 3/8. Was that just for more cooling? Any issues with connection using 3/8 hose? I like the tru cool over b&m and was just trying to choose a model.
 
Toyota is a nice driving truck. Its fine for everyday use. But for towing, not so much. I kick myself in the ass for getting rid of my Chevy. I'll buy another Chevy before another Toyota anyday.
I believe a truck should be tough and handle like a truck, not be wussy and handle like a car.
Toyotas are for posers who want to drive a truck cause they think it makes they like cool.
My stock Tahoe would out tow any FourRunner.

Can you show us on the doll where the bad man from Toyota touched you? :evil:
 
B&M Install - Hardmount

Installed the B&M trans cooler using the hardware and existing points on the AC rad and center support. I had to use longer bolts into the mounting points due to the extra thickness of the brackets, and a spacer for the top right (cut) bracket due to the offset. Initially I had the top right (cut) bracket mounted asymmetrically to the bottom - in a diamond/V shape, but that allowed the cooler to wobble back and forth, hence the cut bracket mounted horizontally to the vertical bar. I used extra lock washers and thread locker and extra zip ties for redundancy. It lays up against the backbar perfectly, and I stuck the foam padding against it for abrasion resistance. Setup is super rigid. My only fear is the hardware vibrating loose. An extra benefit is this mount puts the cooler further forward and gives much better routing angles for the hoses. Also doubled up and zip tied the hoses after routing for abrasion resistance.

Up top, my hoses were marked correctly for hot and cold. Tested multiple times with multiple ppl (there and at trans hard lines. If your trans is warm like mine was, you can start the engine for a few seconds and feel the hot ATF warm up the lines. I tapped from the cold line up top down to the bottom of the cooler and from the top of the cooler down to the cold hardline into the trans. The hardline that's kicked out from the transmission is the cold return line into the trans, and the straight hardline is the hot out line into the rad. As I'm writing this I probably should have bypassed all that snakework of intermediate hardline on the rad shroud.

Using ScanGauge trans temp is pretty stable at high 150-160s while coolant is 180s cruising on a 90 mile drive. Ambient was low 90s. Trans temps are 20-30 deg less than coolant and never got as hot or hotter than coolant like they used to. Used to see spikes into 200's from trans going up and down interstate hills, and now maybe 180s.

No,, was not thinking about the fittings specs,, just really like the TruCool design and quality. No issues with fit up, bought the correct size hose.

Titan guys add that same cooler. Titans come with a actual OEM tranny cooler and the tube warmer in the radiator as well. I just installed the 40k cooler on my titan and its massive. it looks like a damn intercooler for all my TURBOSSSSSS. I also bypassed the radiator warmer as i don't really want a strawberry milkshake in the transmission. Temps are 2 needle clicks lower around town, and like 4 clicks lower on the highway lol.


Anyways, 4runner stuff! LEDS!
