Transmission interchangability

I have just purchased a 2002 4Runner SR5 and the transmission is shot. I thought it was just a solenoid, but when I dropped the pan there was chunks of metal everywhere so I guess it's time to get a new trans. I just wanted to get some info on what year 4Runners I can pull a trans from. Any help would be greatly appreciated. If this info is already available Just show me where, I searched and could not find and interchange info. Thanks in advance for any help.

No, but it needs to be from the 3.4l V6.

When I contact JY selling transmissions they all tell me that 96-99 is different from 01-02. Are they just wrong? The research I have done shows they all have the A340F from 95-03 so what is the difference?

I think you can use the auto trans out of a jeep cherokee (I think its called an A4) and put your toyota bell housing on it. I was just reading about that on pirate. I believe they are the same minus the bell housing. I know they are both made by aisin

They have a few variants of the A340 in our 4Runners, not all of them are the A340F. Also they might be the same general transmission but might have change the electronics inside. Contact these guys and they should be able to give more detailed information.

I will double check but I believe my truck has the A340E, which from my understanding means that it is electronically controlled vs A340F which is hydraulic controlled. I am finding the A340F for almost half the cost of the A340E so if they are interchangeable that would be a life saver. Also there are different variations of each for 4x2 vs 4x4. I will update when I get some more info. Thanks again.

You have a A340F. The A340E is rear wheel drive car variant. 01-02 are electronically controlled and IIRC will be referred to as 30-40E. When my tranny blew, I was told by IPT 01-02 models are different from previous years. Good luck.

The A340E is 2wd, A340F is 4wd and the 340H is the 4wd with the hydraulic transfer case used up to 1995. Here is a link

That's good info, mmml4, but at what point did Toyota switch from the cable-operated kick-down to the vacuum or electronic kick-down? Wouldn't that make a difference in the replacement transmission? tbst - it'd be best to find an A340F from 2001, but I think 01 or 02 would be OK.

Could I put an 04 sequoia trans in my 2001 4runner?? If i changed the bell housing and swapped the shifter lever thing out?

I thought the later ones has electronic line pressure control, instead of cable actuated?

I was planning on making the swap as it'll make my full DBW throttle conversion easier.

You can only use a transmission from an '01 or '02.

I also have a A340 trans question. I have 2 used trannys and they are both out of 2 wheel drive 4runners. 1 is a 2000 and the other is an 2001. The only difference in the 2 is the 1 uses a kickdown cable and the other is electronically controlled. My question is, can I swap out the valve bodies and use the older trans in the 01 vehicle by using the newer valve body?? Any help would be greatly appreciated

If you're wondering about what transmissions work with what year it's pretty simple. The valvebody in the A340 is different 96-98, 99-00, and 01-02. While you probably could get a 96-00 working the 01-02 A340 is electronically controlled and the valvebody is completely different and a 01-02 will not work with anything other than a 01-02 A340.

I will tell you, that the transmission from a 1st gen sequoia will work in 01-02 trucks.

You need to change the bell housing though.

Sorry to necro a very old thread, but I'm needing some information on this. I have an 02 with an A340F that I'm having a ton of trouble finding a decent one in the junkyards here. But there are tons of 1st gen Sequoia A340F's out here with low miles for cheap. Is it really just so simple as swapping the bell and linkage? I know the torque converters have different part #'s, which converter would be needed? I've been trying to find some info on this or a write-up, but no luck. Thanks
