Transmission Issue! PLEASE HELP ME!

I recently fixed a blown head gasket. And my $Runner sat for a good 3-4 months. After we finished and got it running my tranny didn't want to shift. So I changed the fluid and checked the solenoids out and they were ok. My tranny will only work in reverse. The others will not work. But a few weeks ago I was letting it burn the old gas it had and the tranny was making the whining noise while in park. It does not do it in reverse I think, I can't remember. I was thinkin it may be the transmission fluid pump, that it may need cleaning or something. But I aint the expert.

If anyone has any tips,knowledge, or advice PLEASE lmk.

When you say wouldn't shift. Do you mean wouldnt shift out of 1st into a higher gear or just lost all forward gears completely? I have a 90 4runner with an A340H auto trans and it lost 2nd 3rd and o/d while going down the road it just poped into nuetral it seemed. I'm trying to narrow down this problem now so in the future I may be of more help to you, On the same note please let me know if you find out anything that may cause the problem. Thanks
