Transmission problem?

So are you saying that we could put it into 1st when coming to a stop, and also go, and never have the clunk?

I need a solution. I'm past 120K on mine and it happens every time, and it's getting worse in it's feeling. I've tried the grease, and it doesn't work any more. I feel that I've taken great care of this thing, and it is seriously going to piss me off if the transmission (the only thing that you can't do much for) is what goes out.

Did you try my experiment with keeping it in 1st gear???

The popular and much spoken about clunk is unacceptable, so too is the lunge which we believe is caused by the AC compressor coming on increasing rpm. ....

And I will post once more on the 5th overdrive issue that has plagued my vehicle since new. When coasting at 45mph as soon as it shifts in O/D in 5th the transmission shakes, sometimes very noticably. Accelerating (out of O/D), decelarating or shifting into 4th eliminates the shaking immediately. I have given up with the dealer as the claim it is the same as any other and no errors are logged on the system. The only option the service manager has left me with now is to give him the vehicle for a few days and let him use it to let it surface and log the problem, which still doesnt mean they will replace the tranny. I have complained about this since the first week I bought it.
Am I the only person with this problem??
What would you do?
I am now on 32k miles.

1) Has nothing to do with the A/C. Turn it off and drive it and it will react the same way.

2) It will shift out of O/D everytime you take your foot off the gas (i.e. coast) even on the freeway, it will then come up to speed and go int O/D again if you are over 45-50 mph.

I agree, I am aware that taking your foot off the gas and applying again will show the rpm raise slightly then settle as it shifts into o/d again, but to clarify, by coasting i mean, foot on the gas, or gentle accelaration where power is needed to maintain speed, such as driving around the neighbourhood, or being forced to drive that speed by ocngested traffic so you cant increase speed (slowing below 40mph is not an option!).

Learn to channel out the 2 problems. You will find driving your truck to be much more satisfying. Like stated by many already, these issues are not going to break your truck in anyway. You just have to baby the truck when coasting to a stop, instead of stoping abruptly all the time. I never feel the driveline thump on mine driving this way. I love my truck thump or no thump, it doesn't faze me.

4Runner clunk

I have a 03 4Runner with 65K on it and it clunked when I would stop or start moving. I had it into the toyota dealer about 5 times and they kept saying that it needed to be greased more so the driveshaft would slide over the slip yoke easier. It never really helped, I still felt it and it was annoying. The last time I took it to them, I told them to fix it this time or I wanted to talk with a toyota rep. They called someone at toyota corporation and they told them to remove the grease fitting on the slip yoke (or drive shaft...not sure which one) and that opened a hole that allows the air pressure to be released when the driveshaft slides over the slip yoke. They did it and I haven't felt the clunk.

The one thing I can say is if it bothers you to have the clunk, make the dealer fix it and don't let them tell you there is nothing they can do, because mine seems to be fixed and it's a lot nicer driving it knowing that I won't feel that stupid clunk everytime I come to a stop.

03 4runner problems

Hey guys, ok so I think I broke my 03 4runner. I got new tires two days ago and went missing today. Everything was a blast except after I got dont with the mud part. I was on the pavement and noticed it was pulling me left and That the diff locked I was going like 55 mph. I wasn’t aware of what it did so I just hit the button and there was a grinding sound followed by a little pop. So I quickly put the diff lock back on and everything was cool, until I pulled over to see what was up. I parked it and then turned off the diff lock. My car started rolling so I hit the break... strange. So I put it into gear and heard this grinding noise and it wouldn’t go into gear. Can I get a clue as to wtf is happening to my baby?

Is the center diff lock light and vsc light off? Sounds eerily similar to what I just went through, although mine was grinding because I had the speed sensors disconnected and no rear drive shaft. Once everything was put back together it would go into gear without the grinding, but my center diff wouldn't disengage. I had to replace my transfer case to fix it.

Kind of reassuring seeing so many people with the same or similar issues that I’ve been having with my 2007 SR5.

Whenever I come to an abrupt stop or even sometimes around sharp turns I feel and hear an audible clunk and the vehicle seems to drop into neutral…

2007 Toyota 4Runner SR5 codes:

P0456- gas cap (could be an easy fix, just buy a new gas cap) that might fix that and the below issue as well…

P0441- Evaporative Emission Control System

P0455- Evaporative Emissions System Malfunction - Gross (Large) Leak Detected

P0894-Transmission Component Slipping

P2714- Pressure Control Solenoid ‘D’ Performance or Stuck

C1201-Brake control / Dynamic control system : Vehicle stability control system

Any insight or recommendations are greatly appreciated.

So, new here and have done a few searches but so far not found anything yet for a transmission issue I have. I have a 2007 4Runner with V8. After a hard stop all of a sudden a loud grinding noise form the transmission/transfer area. After pulling the transfer case the splines on the safe deff have one light damage to them, but on the rear od the transmission it looks like the female spline shaft is cracked. After pulling the transmission it look looks like this is just a spline coupler th connect the transfer case to transmission. But after calling Toyota they state this is not a serviceable part and does not have a part#

Trying to find more info on this part and diagrams with a part number but so far I have not been able to find any detail info about this.

In this pic you can see the cracked sleeve still on the rear of the transmission shaft

This is the shaft from the transfer case

Best I can tell from a few short vides on eBay is that maybe that coupler is really part of the transfer case and is supposed to have stayed on the transfer case but due to it breaking maybe that's why it stayed on the transmission shaft.

i replaced all my u- joints, cleaned the old grease out of everything, pumped fresh grease and still get a clunk at hard stops. you can literally feel the tension in the body and the release when it clunks.

noticed mine has been clunking lately turning as well.

i took the zerks out and helps alot, their back on though, i was thinking maybe the shaft traps air inside everytime it compresses and binds the whole shaft when trying to smush all the grease in there. what you guys think???

a permanent solution would be great, as those comments that it does no harm is wrong, as my last clunk put the tranny in limp mode and wouldn't go past 3rd and threw a solenoid code.

wasn't there an updated driveshaft that fixed this??
