Transmission service on 96 auto & questions.

I was just reading the sticky on the trans service and then realized that it was for the 4th generation runner. Not sure if that can be applied to mine so please let me know if so.

I just bought this runner (1996) a few days ago and when I checked the trans fluid it almost looks and smells like gear oil. Since this is my first Toyota I'm not sure if the trans fluid is different or something but I'm guessing not. I want to change the fluid this weekend and was wondering what I should know about this process. I've changed tranny fluid before but that was back in the day working in the garages in the mid to late 80's.

I apprreciate any help you guys can give me.

The 3rd gen auto is an A340E, the same as the early V6 4th gens. The procedure is applicable.

Do the tq converters have drain plugs?

I don't know... If they do nobody here has mentioned it. I know MikeTheWino's "pulling the return line near the radiator" trick negates the need to drain the converter.

I know what you're getting at, draining the t-converter would be great.
