Transport 20# propane tank for camping

How do you transport propane tank (20# tank)for camping? Is it safe to tie it on the rooftop rack?

I haven't used a 20# yet, but I've heard people use a milk crate to stabilize them. When I bump up to one thats what I'll be doing.

Personally, I wouldn't feel comfortable trying to secure a propane tank on a roof rack. Most roof racks don't have very high sides, and the tank will be somewhat of a top heavy load to secure. I usually carry mine in the rear 'trunk' area. I always use one of the tank base stabilizers to help keep it upright, especially with the OPD equipped tanks which do not like being transported on their side. Another option, if you are not using a trailer, is one of those hitch mounted load platforms, as long as no one hits you in the rear. :scared:

Sure, no problem. I wouldn't even bother tying it down.

It's not like it could become a flying bomb or anything if you were in an accident or something.

I put it in a milk create & secure it to the crate with a few bungees. About as safe as you can get with those. Other than that - the rear cargo platform would be it - DEFINITELY NOT on the roof!!

I found the solution. I sucked it up and spent extra money for a 5# tank (oh man, it is expensive).

how did you get it home? i just close the valve, put it in the back, crack some windows and go... then keep a nose out for leakage. solution to pollution is dilution. more stink? open the windows. the little green coleman tanks concern me more because there's not a valve that i get to crank down.

more thoughtfully, consider externalities in your safety decision.
