TRD Pro body lean on road?

Ok so I know there is a thread about KDSS versus non KDSS, and I understand the benefits of the KDSS suspension on the road which is where I will be spending most of my time...

However, the only comparisons Ive read have been with Tail Premiums/Trails with KDSS versus SR5's without it...

Considering the TRD Pro has a different non-KDSS suspension than the SR5.... How does the TRD Pro compare?

Does it have a similar amount of body roll/pitch/dive to a KDSS model or to the SR5?

My type of driving is definitely "spirited" on the road and my current CUV has very little body roll or nose dive at all...

Thank you!

Let's say we both have... similar driving styles? The roll on the TRD is nothing to worry about. I assume the sr5 being a tad softer suspension MIGHT have slightly more body roll? Also SOME TRDs might sit higher than some sr5s so it might all equal out in the end.

Bottom line, it drives ok in the twistys, It's not a handful if that's what you're worried about

Go drive both back to back. The KDSS equipped 4runner will be superior in the corners on the road, but the differences can be subjective and you need to drive them back to back to experience each model. Drive an SR5 if they don't have a pro.

Regardless of which model you choose you are in for a totally different driving experience vs your nissan rogue.

Much appreciated advice guys.

I most definitely wont be able to test drive a TRDP anytime soon.

I just want to make sure I can base the TRDP's ride off of an SR5 test drive. Because if they both have completely different characteristics on road, then it defeats the purpose of testing an SR5.

The best comparison to a TRD Pro will be if you can test drive a Trail edition without KDSS. The spring rates and shock valving will be similar. The TRD Pro does have better front and rear shocks, but I highly doubt it will change the body roll properties much. The slight front end height difference of the TRDP will be negligible in terms of changing body roll as well. I came from an FJ Cruiser where KDSS isn't an option, so I don't miss it at all. I'm sure KDSS is nice, but not necessary for my purposes. Good luck!

Ive just checked out your posts in that thread, thank you for the link!

What Im understanding is the TRDP is between the SR5 and Trail with KDSS as fars as road manners are concerned, but are closer to the Trail with KDSS correct?

PNTRDPROO, one thing to consider is... the TRD Pro suspension is going to take a bit more break-in time compared to the others. i know with any Icon or Fox system I've owned (and im sure this rings true with Bilstein), my truck drove noticeably smoother once i returned to the pavement after its first real off-road excursion. Settling occurs and valves do need to seat, so heating up the suspension with a nice off-road romp is the best way to do it. maybe an actual TRD Pro owner can confirm or deny this?

just fyi- I'm running all Fox 2.5 on an SR5 and considerable suspension settling/break-in did ring true for my set-up. My front dropped close to 1/2" after two off-road runs and a few hundred miles.

From what I understand, the suspension breaking in would cause it to be more soft and "rolly", squatty, squishy, and nose-divey, correct?

Yep. The trail with KDSS is barely adequate IMO. Wouldn't want it to be any softer. Its way softer than my old sport edition 4th gen with the XREAS

I honestly don't notice significantly more roll in my TRD Pro than I did with my 2010 LE. It rides a bit more truck like, but I am pleasantly surprised by the ride.

I don't drive much so only have ~ 900 miles on my TRD pro, but I feel like the suspension is softening a bit, but it could be all in my head at this point. The longer I drive the TRD pro the harder it is for me to remember the SR5 and trail editions. This isn't a sports car so I don't think any of this matters much. If max cornering speed is a big consideration, then this may be the wrong vehicle for you. This vehicle makes me want to just chill and drive the speed limit on public roads. My Raptor made me want to speed and accelerate quickly to hear the exhaust. My Evo 8 and Evo 10 both made me want to corner as fast as possible. Bottom line, the TRD Pro performs as it should....there isn't much body roll for what it is, but if you are that picky about the exact handling characteristics, then buy a different model and get shocks tuned to your exact needs. Merry Christmas Eve!

Here is a little background... I have always been into sporty sedans. My prior vehicle was a 2006 Honda Accord with a V6 and Honda Factory Performance suspension which was 1" lower than stock... I was going to get a Maxima but ended up getting the Rogue for practicality reasons. Also, having worked on a ambulance for the past few years I was accustomed to the "higher" up feel.

I ended up loving the Rogue. I actually can drive it like a sports car. There is virtually NO nosedive and very little body roll. It feels like a sedan. There are times I need to get somewhere very fast, and weave in and out of traffic or take a ramp "briskly", etc...

I want a more rugged vehicle and am set on the 4runner for the added practicality and durability and space.

That being said, I just want to make sure I am making the right decision suspension-wise for the 4runner. I want a truck that can get me somewhere (over a curb, through a rutted field, down the beach, over a bunch of zombies) a sedan cant take me and where a cuv may have a harder time, but something that will respond to my inputs on road....

I love the way the TRD Pro looks and the idea of a suspension made to speed over rough terrain (NYC mooncrater potholes)... I dont expect "sports car" handling, but I want to make sure it also responds to my inputs on the road.

If I have to respond to an emergency in it, i want to feel secure driving it.

Thats why Im trying to find out as much as I can about whether the TRD Pro or Trail Premium with KDSS is best for MY needs.

During the summer I plan on taking it on the beach and the occasional dirt/forest road.

if emergency handling is your big issue... maybe something more like an Outback would be better? however, an outback cant run over as many zombies as a 4runner can! :-)

Based on my understanding of your needs I think either model would be fine. Go with what you like more.

"Respond to an Emergency" -- the TRD Pro wouldn't be my first choice as an emergency vehicle. It's a BOF vehicle that was designed for on/off-road driveability. If you need to "respond to an emergency" and plan on taking corners at greater than 45mph in NYC, I'd stick to your Rogue or go for another cross-over vehicle. Not saying the 4Runner couldn't handle it, but again, it was designed for different purpose.

Will you feel secure driving it? Only you can tell. I feel comfortable driving mine.

Does it respond to my inputs on the road? Yes, I turn the wheel right the truck goes right. I turn the wheel left, the truck goes left. I don't expect it turn like a sports car, nor would I try to force it into that role either. The brakes are good and the acceleration is adequate for the engine and transmission. I knew it wasn't going to jump off the line, nor did I expect it to break any landspeed records. It's a 4.0L engine hauling around a lot of weight. If these things were important to me, I would have looked at other vehicles. I wanted a capable off-roader/daily driver and I know that this vehicle will do what I need it to do.

Do you need KDSS or will the TRD PRO meet your needs? Again, only you can decide. Have you been able to test drive both? I knew I wanted the TRD PRO right away based on looks and that I could drive it off the lot and not have to put any more money into mods. Would I have liked KDSS? Absolutely, but it's not an option on the PRO. The Trail drives nice, but I didn't notice any significant differences during my test drives.

At this point, I'm completely satisfied w/ my purchase. I got a great deal on the vehicle -- paid well below MSRP and I know I'll have a vehicle that will last a very long time.

I hope I'm not coming across as a jerk, but a lot of the questions you're asking are subjective and opinions (especially on this forum) differ. Make the choice, TRD PRO, Trail Premium, SR5, or Limited. No matter what you end up with, you're still getting a very reliable and very capable vehicle.

Happy hunting and I hope you're able to get what you want.

I take it by BOF you mean body-on-frame... I know that this vehicle is a truck....

Chevy Tahoes and Ford Expeditions as well as Suburbans and GMC Sierras are used by law enforcement and EMS/Fire departments around the country. A truck can be used for the type of driving Im referring to.

Also, just for clarification, Im not saying Im buying this truck to be a dedicated emergency vehicle. It will be my DD/All arounder... Im saying if I have to respond to an emergency in it, I want to feel stable on the road doing it. I have to get places in a hurry sometimes and I want to know THE BEST of the 2 suspensions for that..... Either KDSS or TRDP....

The other two vehicles Ive looked at were the Nissan Xterra- felt way too uneasy for me even at normal cruising speeds

Jeep Wrangler Unlimited- havent driven one yet and dont really plan to. I was very interested in one until I realized the interior room is limited and the road manners would probably wear on me after a while...

So that is what has led me to the 4Runner

Very simply:
TE with KDSS handles on road best.
LE with XREAS is next followed by the TRDPro and the SR5 and they are about the same. The SR5 shocks were changed for the 14-15 years over the 10-13 models.
I had a '11SR5, A '12 TE with KDSS and now a '15 SR5. I test drove the new LE and TE premium with KDSS extensively before I got the '15 SR5. Two weeks ago I drove a PRO about eight miles around town. Very similar road manners to the SR5. There is a difference but not much.

Bottom line is any of these are fine to drive and comfortable to boot. None of these will handle like a nice CUV or even less like a car. Sure the police drive SUV's but I guarantee they don't drive them like a Explorer or even less like a Charger. Simple physics.
