TRD Pro Fox Shock Clunk

Are Fox shocks bypass shocks? I'm not so familar with trucks or SUVs, but bypass shocks in the tuner/scca racer communities all click and make noises. My Ohlins DFV shocks (which are bypass shocks) on my Honda S2000 click and clunk when it is cold outside. You can hear it a lot when you first drive it in them morning and it's chilly outside (like below 50ish). Once the shocks warm up (by driving around and the shocks soaking up the spring's forces), the clicks/clunks go away.

I've also had the privilege of being invited to drive a friend's scca rallycross car. I asked him... "hey do these things use bypass shocks (not knowing anything about rally), and he said yes and asked why... so I told him my Ohlins makes the same sounds as his rallycross car.

So perhaps what Toyota is saying is actually normal.

Say it slower and louder for the people in the back.

Well thank you for trying to be helpful unlike more people that keep saying it’s normal and deal with it. This isn’t a click. This is a loud hollow thunk almost the same as when your bushing go bad. Yes some shocks make a click, but this isn’t that. Also, it’s only one shock. If this was a standard working action, wouldn’t it be every shock instead of one? In any case, when you feel your floorboard hit from a shock, something isn’t right.
I’m still a believer that it’s possible not the shock but because of the tech tip they will not try to fix anything else. Hence it will not get fixed and we have no warranty for that part of the truck

Why don’t you crawl under and figure it out. You seem to know so much that it should be easy for you to figure out. After all, a 70k pro shouldn’t be making these noises!!

They are internal bypass shocks, yes.

Why should I have to when it’s a new truck under warranty? You’ve never posted anything to help out in here and clearly am fine with your vehicle being a nosies truck and the company not backing the product but some of us aren’t good with that. Also I never said it’s a 70k truck so when you try to be a troll get your comments right

Just an update on my situation:
Toyota is replacing the front shocks. The tech tested everything, including taking the sway bars off and driving to check the sway bar bushings.
They also replaced the front brake pads because the pins were loose in the calipers allowing the pads to rattle.
Parts are on order, so I’ll report back after the new shocks are replaced.

Any update on this?

Interestingly, replacing the brake pads and pins eliminated a significant amount of the noise I was hearing.
According the the SA, still waiting for the shocks from FOX. I plan to check in again this afternoon (weekly follow up). Between this and now the LPFP recall, I'm beginning to lose faith in Toyota. If I wanted to deal with issues like this I would have bought another Audi.

I hear you on losing faith. This is my third 4 runner and I’ve had 2 of there other cars. They always took care of things crazy fast before. Keep us posted please.

Your negative attitude isn’t helping the people who are serious and want to know why their 80k Pro is making weird noises.

Troll.
Clearly you don’t care about your truck. Look at your past post here and in other chats. You drove ages with broken windshields, put cheap knockoff parts on your truck and only make front of others. Leave those that actually take pride in there ride alone when you have nothing to say that helps

Whoa there, friend. I can understand your frustrations bubbling up after paying 90k for a TRD Pro and it squeaking like a Motel 6 mattress, but that’s not a reason to resort to such personal attacks. Goosefraba.

hey now, no need to fan the fire over a six figure Prodozer with its own soundtrack

I took a quick look on Tacomaworld and didn't see anything, but has anyone identified this as a problem over there? Seems strange that it would be isolated to the 4R if it's a "normal" noise associated with the shock type.

Back in March of 19 once they tried to say it was from using the Tacoma numbers for adjusting the 4runner shocks and that’s clearly something that wouldn’t match up, but the same person when I asked if they can get retuned then changed the store so who knows. Being the thirds reported case of this and then only people that’s lived in SD or close noticed it since it was winter they didn’t seem to care.
I’ve searched and can’t find it in other Toyota trucks. I was hoping with more and more reported cases a fix would ah e been found.
Thanks for an actual idea on it.
If anyone else has seen it on another of their products post up would be great.

So just to update everyone on my situation. Special order parts finally came in- still not sure what exactly they are but I could only assume they’re the Fox shocks. The paperwork I received didn’t reference a part number- just said SOP. Parts took over 3 weeks to come in. Dropped the truck off today to be fixed.

After looking at two Supras (which didn’t really thrill me as much as I thought they would) I drove away in my courtesy loaner vehicle. As for those who are being told misinformation, service tech said this is a known issue. He needed to verify that it was the suspension causing the knocking noise and not something else before Toyota would authorize the repair. That was done and it was given the green light.

Service manager said tomorrow pm or Friday it should be good to go.

MY situation sounds much different than everyone else who claims Toyota isn’t addressing the issue, telling people to deal with it, etc. ITS NOT NORMAL. Don’t buy into that crap. I have a 2016 Pro. Silent. Beautiful ride. No issues. If it’s normal why doesn’t that one make noise. Different (more expensive) shocks that happen to be marketed as an improvement- fine. Then why don’t ALL 2019s or 20s make this “normal sound”? Because that’s BS. It’s abnormal. Maybe if this was a race truck with boutique suspension and specialized purpose built valving, sure. But it’s a volume consumer truck that’s marketed to people who want something a little more than the standard 4Runner. Still a 4Runner. Still a Toyota. Still covered by warranty. Still subject to lemon laws.

New cars with new shocks should not be expected to make annoying noises that even your passengers comment on. (Regardless of the price). That doesn’t pass muster. If they said that to me, rather than addressing it, I would escalate it as far as possible. Last resort I would file suit for the cost of repairs. It’s clearly defective. No judge in my state would determine that suspension clunks and rattles which regularly occur under 35 degrees is normal. Especially since it’s not a universal phenomenon. Normalcy must occur across the board.

All I know is somethings happening to my truck inside the service bay of my dealer- we’ll see what exactly that is- but I hope it helps. If not, I’ll keep taking it back until it’s addressed and go from there.

While I agree with a lot of what you say completely, and I have escalated it up Toyota’s chain to the top and even opened a lemon law case on it that did no good due to the tech tip. They simply aren’t doing it.

Also, as you stated Ed you have a 16 Pro, hence you don’t have to worry about it since it’s strictly to the Fox shocks they changed to in 19, hence they can replace yours without the Bs those that have the 19 are going threw. I know this because I asked it I had a earlier gen as my last was a 15.
I’m glad your dealer took care of you as they should and I agree with your views. But sadly that’s not helping us with the 19s.
Hopefully yours is good to go after they swap your stuff

Try a different dealer.

For what the truck cost (largely due to the suspension) I would not just give up on it. Obviously they’re addressing some of them, mine will be ready for pick up this afternoon.

Toyota can’t pick and chose what to fix and not fix for the same year, model, same issue, same remedy, under fair warranty practice. You can also file a complaint with the department of consumer protection I believe. 90% of people who are told its normal will go away and deal with it. Don’t be that person. It’s clearly not normal. If new Fox suspension fixes the issue, then the normalcy argument goes right out the window. As does the fact that some- not all- have this phenomenon.

Also, internal bypass suspension (some) have a clicking sound. Not a clunk that’s rattles the floorboards and sounds like it’s broken.

Early Bilsteins also had a knocking/clunking issue. Toyota fixed it. Probably cost a lot of money- hence the switch in vendor to Fox. I’m sure they’re not happy to hear that Fox is having problems. Should have just stuck with the Bilsteins. But that wouldn’t allow Toyota to justify such a price increase. Another emblem and embroidered headrests don’t call for much of a premium.

I’ve had many dealers look at it from different states and they’ve had their traveling tech special guys(whatever they call them) look at it. It’s always the same. They say it’s a tech tip we can’t touch it. Hence why when I moved here I was happy the new dealer was trying to order a new shock, but Toyota blocked the order due to them saying it’s normal to the shock. The service manager said he never has seen that before. Also, people are saying they are now getting fixed but not one has come back saying they did or post the paperwork showing it so we have proof of repairs. I told my new service manager about repairs and he checked to see if the VIN was cleared of that’s the case. He said often when this is done it’s by regions and takes time sometime to get to your vehicle. The new one is trying but it’s past the dealer level. My biggest issue is when on the phone with Toyota headquarters supervisors about it and asking if I had something else on the undercarriage go out if they were going to say it’s the shock since I still think it could be since mine sounds worse then others. His reply was they aren’t changing anything in that area. Now that I don’t see how is possible. I pointed out that’s not following a warranty and long story short he hung up on me. And I made sure not to yell or curse at him since you could tell he wanted off the phone. They are using that tech tip as a shield and that’s Bs
