TRD Pro LIFT? - Flamers Troll A Different Thread...

I love the TRD Pro in Black. And if I had a TRD Pro in black, it would never be allowed to get dirty.

Now, if you want to buy one and get it, I am jealous.

Next line of thought, I thought this was a public forum for like minded individuals to discuss the 5th Gen. 4Runner. I don't feel the need to use the forum to beat my chest, tell you why I believe I am better than everyone else or tell you why I think I am smarter than everyone else. And if I do have good information to pass along then it makes no sense to slip in a snide comment and lose the whole point of the information.

If you want to lift your 4Runner for looks or for performance it should be your decision. And I see no reason to berate you for either reason. I am glad people come here to discuss their thoughts and ask others for their opinions. I want to voice my thoughts and suggestions but I don't need to be passive-agressive.

If you want to use spacers or the top of the line suspension that is up to you to decide based on your wants, desires, needs and budget. I am not morally superior because I can recommend, desire or even own something lesser, equal or even better.

I come here to discuss the 4Runner and not have a battle of wits. I have other places in my life to do that.

...I know stuff some of you don't so I post it....

That right there is the crux of your problem, whether you realize it or not. You try to come across as an authority, but you fail to realize two things--1. there are people who know more than you on any given variety of subjects, and 2. you often post incorrect and/or inaccurate information.

Way to dig up an old thread just to bash someone for contributing useful info. Like it or not, I'm sure 1eng has contributed more to this forum that you ever have. If you want to call someone out on incorrect factual info I suggest you back it up with facts of your own.

I'm sure you're an intelligent individual. You should know that debates are fought with facts and not personal opinions.

@OP, what about a body lift? If you put some sliders on, it may not be too much of an eye sore. That said, I know diddly squat about body lifts or even if they make them for the 5th gen. I personally wouldn't do it, but it's probably worth a google (as is taylor swift, but don't google body lift and t. swift at the same time)

Hey guys,

I wanted to revive this as I'm looking for something slightly taller myself.

Toytec currently makes a bottom plate spacer for the Baja TX front Bilstein that yields approx. 1" of additional lift but will make the ride a bit firmer. The TX Baja shares the same shock body as the TRD Pro, with different spring rates and valving. This might be the best way to get the original post-production TRD Pro lift before they omitted the third adjustment point. It's pictured on the right below. It will affect the ride height as it preloads the spring, but it won't be detrimental as the pre-production TRD Pro was just as high. The left is what the TRD Pro comes with (except pictured on the TX Baja).

Another option for a very mild lift would be to install a 1/2 Toytec top plate spacer which yields about 3/4" lift. The top plate spacers are reported to not change any ride qualities which may benefit those looking to retain factory ride feel but want a better lift. Of the two, these will work the best as it won't affect the spring preload.

I'm currently looking into a custom front spring at near-factory spring rates without relying on spacers for a lift. I'm afraid the Toytec 620lbs (yielding a 2.5" lift) may be a little firm for me. I believe the TRD spring rate may be closer to 550lb but have no way of verifying without sending it out for analysis or having access to measuring equipment. I'm investigating whether a taller spring with OEM TRD spring rates may yield a higher lift without sacrificing ride quality or having to run spacers.

Unfortunately I have to dedicate some downtown for this as it means obtaining the non compressed free height of the spring. If someone has beaten me to the punch please feel free to share your data so I don't have to.

Rear spring options are pretty much good to go as there are a number of different options (SAW 1.5, Icon 2.0, etc.). Fronts are where we are limited if we want to retain the TRD Bilsteins since most manufacturers are opting to utilize coilovers.

^^Very interested to see where this goes. To me, it almost seems like the TRDP has a reverse rake or prerunner-like look. Those that have acquired on of the new pros, please correct me if I'm wrong on that as I haven't spent much time with one in person yet. My biggest fear is that with a little bit of gear and dogs in the back, this thing is going give me a really saggy bottom.

It seems that right now the smallest replacement rear spring I can get is the SAW 1.5. If I replace the stock ones with the 1.5's, will it (1) void warranty and (2) give me way too much rake? I'm wanting to keep the stock Bills obviously. The specs say that it has a 12% increase in spring rate which, hopefully, doesn't seem like it will change the "stock" ride quality too much.

Any input would be greatly appreciated!

I mentioned a little bit about the pre-production vs. production models. The pre-production models definitely had some reverse rake, but the production models the front lift is greatly reduced- probably a good 1/2" or so. You'll notice that the pre-production models had three notches on the Bilsteins, whereas the production there are only two. The rake is definitely gone, but you can get it back easily with the Toytec spacers.

I have the boss coil overs up front but I can tell you the SAW rear springs are really nice, the slight increase in spring rate meant that with the lift it was similar to my Xreas ride paired with the bilstein 5100 rear. It's slightly firmer but nowhere near harsh, I have a little extra weight I carry around but not more than 150lbs daily (I do have 3rd row as well on top of that). But if you have the TRD coil over in the front the SAW springs will likely give you a high rear end based on what I've seen without doing something in the front and i have no idea if those rear shocks allow for more height without issues.

Deleted my other post as a courtesy to OP to stay on topic.

Just did a build on Toyota.com on a TRDP, looks like around $45,500 OTD and then another $1000 for tires, no JBL, no push button start, no Torsen? I think I'll wait for the TRD Pro Limited.

Curt i hate to be captain obvious. But, what does this have to do with this thread.

Now I would like to see different option using different springs in the stock shocks. I just started to get some of the Icon billet parts to replace the factory stuff to allow for a little more articulation, but if i cannot get the stock shocks and springs settled out with my load I may have to end up with the Icons 2.5 extded travels and remote reservoirs front and back. I hope to not have to as I am beginning to worry about adding weight when going on a trip expedition style. I do like the availability of parts in the stock configuration making repair somewhat easier as parts are easier to get. Though the parts I am getting I find it difficult to reall bust them, except for maybe a Jonny Joint or bushing. That is what spare parts are for....

I am keeping an eye out on this thread as the toytec solution is not terrible it would offset a heavy bumper or a winch and add some lift. I still think that perhaps a quality custom spring may be an answer, but i do not knwo in the end wha the Bisteins can handle travel wise.

That's gonna be a one wait.

I for one bought the TRD pro because it came without a lot of the stuff I was hoping to do without ; sunroof, slidding tray, kdds gizmos, etc...which Is the way I was ordering my trail edition AND the looks of it to me was something I was going to do to the white trail as well, plus the black grill on the pro is a nice + i didn't think about. They basically saved me time and money.

The reason I bring those points up is that Suspension wise I always planned on lifting it about 2-3" so I never looked at the TRDs suspension as a selling point, I know that might be sacrilegious to some. I'll be doing a King or Icon lift with rear long travel kit on it so that I can get more clearance out of it, be able to get more articulation and carry a bigger load while retaining a good ride. I'll keep the TRD suspenders in a box in case one day I decide to sell it and whoever wants it has a hard on for the original truck, but that was always my plan no matter which truck I took home.

Doc I may have a bead on some custom Eibach springs that may work. Hardest part will be figuring out how the spring rates/spring heights translate into lift height. I know the TX Bajas are 650lb/in, and the TRDP are rumored to be lighter still. I guess if I find the TRDP spring rates and get a custom coil spring an inch or so higher, that should translate to a ~2" lift above OEM. Worst comes to worse I could take the easy way out and run the off-the-shelf Toytec coils...

I ended up in a TRDP when actually shopping for a trail premium. I wanted some of the stuff of the premium but not a fan of sun roofs - wasn't planning on paying any premium for a TRDP and they never asked me to so it worked for everyone. ;-)

i think you'll find Icon parts are going to be more easy to find than the Toyota ones. its not like there are going to be TRD Pro's littering junk yards all over the country because they were so common. you're forgetting the TRD Pro is a limited production truck, with a specific suspension. Bilstein may be 'releasing' that new shock set to the public in the form of the 6920 or whatever it is - but what happens if that goes on Backorder? Icon or Fox or whoever you buy from has readily available parts that are cross standardized and stocked throughout country to rebuild the shocks rather than replace them, and if the event arose that it did need replacement - all they have to do is make the part or scavenge it.

but, why would someone buy a TRD Pro if you were just going to replace the whole suspension anyway...?

Plus parts are quite easier to get ahold of, ie through a dealer in a region. Most of the time the region warehouse will have spares. I think that is much easier than having to just call the manufacturer of aftermarket parts.

Because I got it cheaper thatn a trail? And the funds are from selling other gear from my FJ no big deal, i like the looks of the inferno and if i decide to,change it out no big loss.
