TRD Pro parts

I think Toyota fabed up a completely different skid plate for the Pro w/KDSS. Maybe we'll see the KDSS skid offered to the public at a later date.

Posting for comparison...

Hard to tell any difference in the plate other than cutout.
Looks like the bolts are in the same place.
Looks like they used different sized/style lettering for the "TRD" logo. Look at the "R" on both pics.

Maybe they used SR5 non KDSS Radiator Support Brackets.... oh, should be able to purchase those from TOYOTA.

Thanks for using my image too! :D

Maybe Toyota will release a TRD Pro with sunroof, mirror turn signals and KDSS right before they release the 6th gen 4runner like they did with the FJ Ultimate Trail Team edition right before they stopped importing FJs over here.

I found the name for them, just not the part number. "front suspension member brace sub-assembly"

Actually, it looks like the first gen of RCI skid plates had you remove them.

Further food for the thought that the prototype did not have any either. I am not an Engineer, but from the looks of it, it seems the main purpose of the brace is to prevent the lower radiator/support from being pushed back. I wonder if the 1/4" thick, ~2' wide skid plate would provide sufficient support for this purpose as well. I also wonder if there is any specific reason that RCI changed their original design that called for their removal.

UPDATE:

I called Josh at RCI and he said that there were no issues in removing the braces and using the skid for support. He said that the design was changed because 1. The new designed allowed you to use the same filler plate for both KDSS and non-KDSS skids. 2. Some expressed that they did not like having to remove the stock braces.

If I remember correctly, the issue is going to be that the braces are also the rear mounting points for the skid but I THINK there is still a tab and hole just above the where the skid mounts to the brace.

I had a local FJ buddy swear to me he could mod one for me and he failed too. So I also have a $250 paper weight. After a full week of working on the truck, I am too lazy to take pics but here is a quick and dirty drawing. (don't hate on my mad paint skills lol)

Basically, it will not work due to the bottom radiator support brackets. The non KDSS ones are flat at the bottom and the KDSS variety curves at the bottom for the say bar. You would have to use 1 1/4 - 1 1/2 spacer for the rear mount and a 3 - 3 1/2 spacer for the front. But this also throws off the angle on the front lip (where it is stamped TRD).

I am betting that the prototype used the flat brackets or none at all. One thing I noticed while installing my lift was at no time did the sway bar ever travel enough that it would have hit the regular bracket at full droop. So unless there are bracket clearance issues during side to side articulation one MAY be able to swap to the flat brackets. I am not sure how one would source these though.

Thanks for explaining the issue. Didn't want to crawl under there and take the skid plate off for photos... anybody want a modified "TRD Pre-Production" looking skid plate, contact me.

I removed the supports and bolted up the TRD skid plate without issues. Needed to use the bolts that held the supports at the rear and not the longer bolts that came with the skid plate. In looking at the supports, if they come into play I have bigger problems.

Congrats to Joel for actually making a TRD Skid plate fit on a KDSS equipped T4R....that's is I am reading this correctly!

Did you compare the interior height of the skid plate (on the driver's side where the KDSS sway bar droops) to the interior height of the supports? You might want to do that before really articulating the front end and finding out that the swaybar and skid plate don't play nicely together.

I just got back from my Mojave road trip. Let me get the truck cleaned up and I will mount up the skid without the braces and take some measurements/pics.

I called Shrockworks and their front skid also calls for removing the supports. So honestly, I don't have anymore reservations about removing them. I got a packed schedule for the next couple days but I will get around to mounting mine up on Friday at the latest.

OregonTrailRunner,

How about some frontal and side photos.

I'll take some photos this evening and try to post. Looks like the pre-production TRD Pro…

I made a template off the stock skid plate and transferred it to the TRD unit so clearance is good. Used a little artistic license in the final cuts. I use my rig mainly for hauling my drift boat out of crappy takeouts and not serious rock crawling. Thought the TRD plate would look cool and channel road kill under the rig without dragging it along. I also like to mess with the guys at the dealership.

My buddy cut mine and did not do as clean/detailed of a job as OregonTrailRunner but I am not worried about it. Here are some pics showing internal clearance. I measured at the same spot and no clearance was lost with the skid in place. It was dark outside so I could not take any external pics yet.

I know I saw them some place here....but I am no help on the part #!

I removed mine and did the unthinkable plastidip and they are holding up nicely.....
Might have to call the dealer and ask for the trail end caps part #...:hello:
