TRD Pro Side Mirror Swap/Upgrade

All this for a new person who showed up for the sole purpose of selling something?

That is what it pretty much looks like.

yes, I started a thread for a new member who designed a new product/solution when she was too new to start a thread. many people here reported her for not being a vendor and as a result her thread was shut down (not by me).

Ok let’s go through this part by part, because this deserves some unpacking.

First, you opened a thread not in the classifieds to sell something for someone who was not a member on here initially, or owns a 4Runner, so that she could push her product. Yet, you state that we have to be a vendor to sell things. I don’t see “official vendor” under your name, and that thread is still up. If you want to hold people to the rules, fine, but you should be just as accountable to them as the rest of us.

Second, please go through and re-read your own thread. That individual didn’t design anything. She tried to resell a product to members on here that would not work for it’s intended purpose in the 4Runner with an extreme markup. Any fixes, were from people after they had issues with the product ( Ex. like the adapter plate, which was designed by another member ((Crazmex)) after he had the product and found it would not work). Reselling a product doesn’t mean you designed it.

Posting misleading information, copying other’s work ( Antman , and even using one of his pictures, which he asked for her to remove) while trying to make sales on a product with a changing process and product while saying “it will work” is a shady business practice at best.

let's also not forget how you attacked her and her product stating that people could buy the parts for less than her offered solution. which i'm pretty sure is the case with many products people buy every day, probably even yours.

Was my tone misconstrued, possibly. It’s often the case when text is the sole form of communication, and you lack facial expression and vocal cues. Once again, go reread your thread and my post. I gave her credit for looking for a solution, and what she did on the Tacoma side of things was done well, but my point was that a solution should not come at the expense of the customer, nor of value to the customer. If it is a good deal for everyone, great. If it is done with misleading information, and the sole goal of generating as much money as possible while clearly not spending the time to make sure it works, then that’s a problem.

Her offered solution for the 4Runner was the exact parts that were available. Stop throwing up “straw man” arguments. It’s unbefitting.

If you want to go through and critique my designs on wiring, then go ahead I welcome it, but I don’t see anyone else going through and finding the right components and doing it properly nor as cheaply as I do. I source my connectors and components directly from Japan from companies like JAE, Sumitomo, Yazaki, Tokai Rika, etc. All of which are whom Toyota uses themselves. I do this as a hobby on the side for those who want to do things correctly like myself. I go through and hand build all of my stuff, not farm it out to some sweat shop in China, so I rather doubt they can be at the same quality or found cheaper elsewhere.

but rather than just support her and the time she spent trying to figure something out, you just tried your best to discredit her with a page long post that must have taken you an hour to put together.

So let me get this straight, instead of posting up facts and saying people would have an issue getting this to work, and oh, you are getting price gouged, I should have just been quiet and let members of this community get fleeced? Wow, that’s some messed up logic and ethics, especially from a moderator.

Once again, go back and read your own thread, because my post was liked and thanked for the information, and I also received a few PMs thanking me as well.

Any discrediting was self inflicted and done by the conflicting information and constant change to the product while pushing sales.

and i'm not sure why you're confused about what selling is but let me try and explain. When you have an item for which you are attempting to exchange with someone for money that is defined as a "sale." Every item in the for sale section represents this.

Thank you for the textbook definition, but the question was and has been, at what criteria point do we, as members transition to vendor status.

If someone were to manufacture or introduce a product or solution, say an interior mod, and attempt to sell mass quantities, then they are, or attempting to be, a vendor.

Really, because like in my PM’s to you, there are multiple instances of this on the site where people make something and sell something. Here, let me link this thread:

Ultimate camping mod- rear window up / down and hatch pop with ignition off!

How is this different from what I do, but no vendor status is required? If you can’t answer that question, then either A) you don’t know the rules you are trying to enforce, or B) You just don’t care and apply them at your whim.

This applies even if the thread is created under the guise of being a "How-To." Can you perform the "How-To" without buying your product? Did you ever create a group-buy thread for one of your products? Did that thread generate over 100 orders? Are you seeing the difference here?

Or create your "How-To's" and provide people with the means in which to truly do it themselves without sending you any money.

Yes, folks can perform the “How To” to without buying my product. The part numbers for the required OEM harness were listed in my “How To” threads. The Factory wiring diagrams are readily available on this site, and connector part numbers are easily pulled up in Toyota's TIS page that anyone can get access to. The point of my harness designs are to reduce the work in swapping out a larger wiring harness, and reduce the cost. I also provide quite a bit of help to others with wiring stuff that is completely unrelated to my “How To”’s and answer quite a bit of questions regarding how to do things both related to those, and to unrelated projects.

You would have seen that had you read through them and asked other members questions first instead of deleting them in retaliation.

Once again, every harness I make is done by request only, not by pushing sales. If people stop wanting them, or I don’t have the time, I don’t make them. It’s that plain and simple. If there was a large demand for one harness, then that is what I made. Don’t try and make it seem like anything otherwise.

Again, your arguments to make this seem like your actions in deleting my mirror harness thread were justified are weak. You can’t provide a single clear answer, nor explain why others threads are fine, but mine were not.

You want to sell things without doing it officially. You want to complain about unjust treatment while also treating others unjustly. Suck it up and pay the fee and be a vendor.

Once again, If I were a business generating revenue, I would be perfectly fine paying a monthly vendor fee. That being said, for the last time I AM NOT A BUSINESS! I’m not going to pay a monthly fee to keep my threads from being held hostage, when I only make two to three harnesses a month, if even that. That is insane.

You want to talk about unjust treatment. Good, let’s talk.

I think I have a pretty good reputation on this site, and I think a lot of members who have interacted with me would say similar. In fact I’m sure if you scroll back a few pages, you will see just that. You want to say that me posting up facts in good faith for the community was unjust treatment, fine that’s your prerogative, but what does that say about you. If I recall, you were making disparaging comments about me on a completely unrelated topic in an unrelated and thread shortly after I posted up those facts. Ring a bell, Jesse? Oops...What a load of bull.

Really, these arguments by you, trying to make it seem like your actions were justified to upkeep some rule (that nobody can lay eyes on the physical text of or provide, might I add) are just plain sad and disturbing.

You, a moderator, acting in retaliation and closing not only my Mirror retrofit thread, but now also my meter and foot light threads (which have both been around for over a year and longer than you have been a moderator) under some BS guise of “needing to be a vendor” while caring this much about a random person who came to sell a product to the community is concerning.

In fact, you mentioned this individual twice to me in PMs when I asked about my thread, and now once publicly here. That’s pretty telling just in the frequency you refer to them. In the PMs you act like you don’t know the “other poster” but act all buddy-buddy in that thread you opened here as well as over on the other 4Runner site. Is this a buddy of yours from TacomaWorld? Maybe a little quid pro quo going on? If you care about a random one-time product pusher this much, and are willing to delete another members threads months later in retaliation, then maybe you shouldn’t be a moderator here for the sake of this community, admin .

If your feelings were that hurt by me posting in good faith to save other members on here a big headache and quite a bit of money, and by showing the dishonesty in that thread, here’s a lifelong piece of advice: suck it up.

Sad to see so many DIY threads by OldRed get closed because mods think he's trying to sell things through all of them.

Forums exist to share info. Closing those is pretty bass-ackwards when more and more forums are dying because people think facebook is a better source of info.

Exactly!
OldRed had done an incredible amount of work to freely share his information.
His DIY threads have been outstanding. I’m sure he has quite a following.

What’s going on is bad for this forum.

No one has answered my previous question of how much is it to be a vendor?
I'll fork over the cash right now for old red to keep doing what he's doing. I may be new to this forum, but have been around other car forums since early 2000s.
Never have I seen so much pressure to keep someone from helping out the community.
This is a free market, why don't you let the market decide how his "product" sells? That is, if old red is a business after all....

If the admin or some responsible moderator would respond and properly post the vendor criteria, rules, and costs, an educated decision could be made. Maybe us grateful members could take up a collection or set up a GoFundMe account to cover Old Red’s cost of being a “vendor”. I’m only half serious here, because I bet the cost is pretty high, like $100+ per month. And Old Red is not in the vendor category anyway.

Just gotta be a girl to get a pass

I'm sorry you guys feel this is the case. The fact is I've always been more than fine with these types of threads. hence why i started one for a new member who i knew nothing about other than her reputation on TW. I'd rather this community benefit from the introduction of new mods and products than be limited by rules and financial obligations. I never had a problem with Old Red's threads until he started attacking someone who was doing the same thing. Even after that new user paid the fee and became a vendor she was still attacked and discredited until she was run off the site entirely. many here want to preach about the good of the community but in this case the community acted like a bunch of inconsistent *******s. and that's what this all comes down to, consistency, nothing more.

I won't continue to debate this and I'm sorry if you all don't see the double standard. I'm also sorry if you don't see the difference between an individual selling their parts or items as compared to someone bulk selling something they've made.

I agree with this statement, but it's simply not true because of the recent happenings. Old Red warned others that the mirror lady was selling an incomplete product and you took up a personal vendetta against him. You personally started a thread for a non-vendor (and weren't going to enforce the vendor rule, clearly) that was pushing product and then closed a DIY thread that was, in essence, "if you don't want to make the harness I'll sell it to you but here's all the info how to do it". Yes, I get that he's still selling product, I get that there's a fine line between posting a DIY and trying to skirt vendor rules, but if there's an issue then tell him he needs to remove reference to selling product in his post. Don't delete the whole post that benefits the community.

This happened because the person was selling a product that was a sham. It wasn't tested and they were using the people who purchased the product as a test-bed to make changes. Look at the Artec Industries front bumper thread that was started recently; the OP had TONS of issues and was warning other people about not buying the bumper. That's what forums are for. The only difference was that because Artec is an actual company, they kicked butt, made changes, and sent out a new bumper on their own dime. I don't recall the lady selling mirrors doing anything to help people who'd already purchased other than trying to push more kits and thanking users for doing the testing for her.

What about the CarTrimHome T8 thread and the users who were BLATANTLY pushing units for commission there? None of them had to be vendors and they were just shilling for referral sales.

You've successfully pushed one of the most knowledgeable users away from the forums because T4R can't define what it means to actually be a vendor and can't hold all users to the same standards.

and that's what this all comes down to, consistency, nothing more.

I won't continue to debate this and I'm sorry if you all don't see the double standard. I'm also sorry if you don't see the difference between an individual selling their parts or items as compared to someone bulk selling something they've made.

You keep mentioning inconsistency...I don't think you know what it means. Also that's what Old Red is; an individual selling parts or items. Bulk would imply he's got some sort of assembly line going and he's just churning out these things. MESO JDM is a good example on Tacoma World. He's got a whole machine shop essentially and is making injection molded pieces. That's totally different than someone making a harness a week to help people who don't have the time or skill-set to do it themselves.

Conflict of interest going on here with this mod methinks

This absolutely sounds like a conflict of interest! This moderator obviously has some sort of connection to the "new vendor." While it might not be a personal connection, it is a connection nonetheless. The moderator appears to be taking out his frustration for endorsing a product that was later rejected by some on this site. This alone should be a reason for him to recuse himself from passing judgement on issues involving Old Red. The status of his threads should be decided by admin or another, impartial moderator. Not by someone who so obviously had a bone to pick with him.

Keeping this thread derailed…

It’s times like this when I miss the 1engineer’s pragmatism in such matters. There has got to be a solution that allows the type of product/service Old Red provides to be classified differently than a conventional vendor.

What a shit show.

This stuff doesn’t happen on the Chevy Forum at all. I guess because most of the time we are at the dealer getting stuff fixed, or talking about our 24” chrome bro wheels. Lol

Seriously though- my new truck is awesome and this thread is a real mess.

Pull it together guys- geez!

ugh, breaking my own rule by giving this any more attention. not that any of this should matter, but here is what happened. the power fold mirror user (KTJO4x4) asked for my assistance in starting her thread. I don't know her from anyone. I created it because i thought her offering was cool and worth being shared and discussed here. The thread was shut down multiple times. I was able to see it so I had no idea that it was invisible to others. She kept messaging me saying she could not find it. Eventually i was notified that another mod was hiding it because she was not a vendor. just like everyone else here i attempted to gain some clarity about when a person becomes a vendor. I pointed out to the mod that Old Red is able to sell things, and that even the mod is selling things without being a vendor. You can see this exchange below. Before all the conspiracy theorists go even more crazy, the deleted part of the exchange is personal and not mine to share. This resulted in Old Red getting shut down, not by me (albeit I did raise the question), in the same fashion as KTJO4x4. So this was not a personal attack, and in fact performed by a mod other than myself.

I have no connection to KTJO4x4. I didn't buy her product and i certainly didn't and don't stand to gain anything from her sales. I was disappointed in the way she was treated by users and moderators of this forum and i tried to stick up for her. not because she is a woman, not because i have some financial interest in her work, but because it was the right thing to do. because i've been a member here for almost a decade and i know what happened to her wasn't a valid representation of what this forum is, or at least what it used to be. maybe her product was crap. i never cared enough to have button to move my mirrors. but even if it was that's no reason for people to bash creativity and ingenuity. there is a more adult way that conversation could have went down which didn't include Old Red going on a page long rant picking this person apart. But even with my personal feelings about Old Red and his personal motivations for doing what he did, i was still not the one to shut him, or anyone, down.

See, that absolves a lot of hate that you got for this whole exchange.

Essentially the forum is run as "however we want to do it" and the "good 'ol boys" get a free pass. Nice to see that momo.75 treats this as a position where they use their standing to profit freely but enforce rules upon others :clap2:

Thank You for replying and clarifying your position in all of this as well as giving us a little more insight. It still seems like Old Red got the short end of the stick with this whole deal. In the end we all lose by denying individuals like Old Red the ability to contribute their knowledge and experience to this site.

Agreed, Old Red has been a contributing member and shouldn't be compared to the lady who was overcharging for folding mirror kits. No comparison in my book. Tanner has always gone out of his way to help members and has been a great and valuable member of this community, definitely got the short end of the stick

Jesse1983 I am sorry to see any attacks or rude behavior on the forum. I have myself have been target of rude comments when I really only try to share and be helpful. @Oldred is the same, he isn't profiting from this which is the underlying motive of a "vendor", believe me as his day job involves having an MD behind his name. It is just something he is good at and wants to share with and help others while recouping his cost. Look, to me it is ridiculous how a guy like @oldred gets shut down while a true vendor with a clear sales benefit from the Sprint Booster thread gets sales volume to his store by providing "advice" replies every other day supporting the product with a link to the shop and a sales discount in his signature.... Uhm is that a registered vendor (maybe he is and if so whatever)?

As someone who has also been on the forum over a decade and contributed since my first posts about hardwiring my V-1 in my '06 sport =, Please go back to the other mod and advocate for having @Oldred's threads restored and let him interact with us here... otherwise we all lose.

Thanks for the consideration.

The rules are pretty simple, if you want to bulk sell things you must become a vendor. the link for which can be found on the right hand side of every page on this site, and here:

Become Sponsor/Advertiser - Toyota 4Runner Forum - Largest 4Runner Forum

The amount of harnesses that guy sells will probably not cover the cost of the ridiculous "vendor fee." It makes sense to charge for established business advertisement, but some guy making harnesses in his free time? Get a life.
