TRS Retrofit Bulbs

So I have a 2015 TEP, and I did some looking around the forum, and noticed that others have changed out their HID bulbs. Huge plus, but here is the question that I cannot find the answer to. Can I just change the HID bulbs out, and put the 55w 5500k bulbs in there and be ok, or do the ballasts need to be changed out as well. Really seems like a stupid question, but since its brand new, I want to make sure I am right before I start doing mods.

2015 Limited with 55w HID

I just did my 2015 Limited with 55-watt HID bulbs and ballasts. There are no 4Runners coming out of the factory with HIDs. If you have the factory lighting system, there are no ballasts currently in your vehicle. Although there isn't a very clean cut-off line in the beam, the light at 55-watts is very embarassingly bright. To answer your question, the systems available out there are so cheap now. You might as well replace the whole thing. You can use your 35-watt ballast to power HID fog lights.

I did a Kensun 55-watt for $59 on Amazon. Very white light without any blue. No flicker and even spread of light. The only thing I didn't like is cutting a hole in the headlight dust cover( the power feed is already inside the headlight housing but it has to come back out to feed the ballast, and then it as to come back in to feed the bulb).

The 15 has projector headlights so you will just need to get a bulb/ballast kit and you will be all set. No blinding people or anything

35W HID with the projector is ultra bright already. Really no point doing 55W.

I found that 35W 4300K Philips bulbs by XenonDepot is really the best result. White and bright, and not blueish/ricey/high-schoolish.

Thanks for the input, and that sounds good. With the TRS ballasts and bulbs, should just be a plug and play. I shouldn't have to do any cutting on the headlight, I don't think. Why 55w do you ask? I have a little of the Jeremy Clarkson going on.....MORE POWER!!!(in my best Top Gear voice)

Now, does anyone have any pictures of theirs after putting HIDs in the factory projector?

If you trust us here, go use XenonDepot "Philips" 4300K bulb.

Forget about the wattage gimmick.

You do have to cut a hole behind the low beam light cover. No big deal, that part is $10 if you need to replace it later.

I have the Xenondepot Philips rebased 4300k kit and it works really well.

If I had to do it over I would have went 5000k and just pieced together my own using the Hylux 2A88 ballasts and CNLight bulbs for about half the cost though. $65-80

I will attempt to summarize why below:

TRS, Diode Dynamics, and Xenondepot (except the Philips rebased 4300k) all use the "straight" CNLight bulbs.

Diode Dynamics and Xenondepot use a Hylux 2A88 ballast with a low startup current (3.5-4.5A) so you really do not need a secondary harness as the stock wires already see ~4-4.5A with stock halogen bulbs. Philips uses and re-brands this ballast as well.

TRS uses their own ballasts but have been hit or miss for some over the last couple generations, especially in cold environments. The current version seems to be fine but the Hylux seems to just be rock solid.
