I posted this thread in General Discussions, but havent gotten any feedback. Maybe an expert lurking in here will chime in.

FJ coils with XREAS in thread in General Discussion

Basically I have 2 questions:

1. Due to the XREAS, is there anything physically preventing the installation of a taller (FJ cruiser) coil?

2. Would a slightly taller coil that results in a very mild (~1") lift be acceptable to install and still retain the XREAS system?

It looks like moocowjr has FJ coils installed on the rear of his truck (in addition to some spacer lifts) and still has XREAS hooked up and functioning. Obviously there was nothing physically preventing the installation of the coil, and apparently the 1" extension of the XREAS shock is acceptible.

I assume this would be the case for the front as well?

The only thing I would think is exactly how much "beefier" the FJ coils are vs. the 4Runners, will they fit in there and not rub something. As far as extending the shocks 1" its not a problem.

For reference, nomotoe4me has installed FJ Cruiser coils in addition to his Revtek kit, as described in this thread:

He has an SR5, so obviously does not have XREAS. Judging from appearance, he may be 2WD as well- not sure if that would make any difference or not.

Interesting... I missed that thread. Yep, thats a 2wd and it shouldnt make a difference.

Don't have the x or the FJ coils but did add the OME coils to the back and kept the RT spacer on top. Like 6-7 inches over stock in the back. Love it. Kept the air bag but need to add a new bump stop - had to cut them down when I added them with the stock springs. Just want to use the air bags as a bump stop.

My main question is whether the 1" longer springs will damage the XREAS. It appears as though it may be OK.

The air bags you installed were from a relatively affordable kit, correct? They look like theyre holding up OK- any regrets? Id like to keep the rear level when towing, so if your kit works well I may go that route.

Since you're uncertain about the second quote, I'll weigh in.

If the published ground clearance numbers can be relied on, I don't think the FJ coils would provide a lift on a 4Runner. Adjusted for tire size, the ground clearance is the same. Maybe the FJ coils aren't longer. If they are, then they must be softer, right? If that's the case, it sounds like you'd end up with no lift and a different ride which you may or may not like.

In any event, I think XREAS would be fine if you did the swap.

Thanks for chiming in. Judging from 2 peoples accounts (listed above) the FJ coils *should* lift the 4Runner a little. Maybe theres not quite enough info out there to consider it a proven mod, but Im somewhat confident the FJ springs will do what Im looking for.

Correct me if Im wrong, but one of the differentials is the lowest point on both the FJ and 4Runner, correct? Wouldnt the only thing to increase the clearance at the differential be larger tires?

Yeah, up front is the lowest point. I forget exactly where but the front diff is a bit lower than the rear, at least with the hardware underneath it anyway. Not sure about the actual diff itself. The front diff can be lifted with springs or spacers because its independent suspension. The rear solid axle diff can only be lifted with larger tires.
