TRY THIS To Turn OFF VSC!

I have found that if I just romp on the gas I can get plenty of spin (thats in the dirt). It's only when I get on it a bit that I get the dash flashing and the groning sound. Yes know I drive like a red neck. Still have yet to get a smokey burn out. Any one try this? Get off road and just get on it!
 
What would happen if you were driving a vintage 1970s or 1980s 2WD or 4x4 pickup in 2WD that had very little weight in the back and shitty bias-ply tires with little tread?

If you stomped on the gas with this set-up in a rain-soaked intersection, there would be no VSC kicking in, but you would just either sit there spinning tires or have your ass end let loose.

This is the type of 4x4 that I learned how to drive while growing up. Therefore, making the transition to a modern 4WD with VSC is no big deal. I just ease on the gas and drive like I've done for the last few decades without any trouble.

And yes, I live in NE PA, where we do get our share of snow and ice. Probably not as much as you do, but enough to learn how to drive in it.

I'm glad that you can handle VSC. The point I'm trying to say is that modern vehicles are becoming more electronically and taking the power from the driver to the computer. Probably I'm an old school, but I prefer to maintain full control of the vehicle in my hands. I'll give an example. 2 years ago I used to drive Mitsubishi Montero (it's not a sporty SUV, more off-road). My friend was working in BMW dealership and he gave me an opportunity to take part in BMW X5 test. I remember that it was light snow and I nearly destroyed that vehicle in those 2 hours. The point was to drive the vehicle WITH all electronics engaged in slippy condition and see how it is perform. X5 was spinning, wasn't able to make small icy hills and it had very good and reliable winter tires. So it was horrible. Then I took my vehicle on stock summer tires, switched off all electronics and done the same trip without any problem at all. This was some sort of an experiment for BMW Canada. After this those guys (BMW) really start thinking of doing some modifications to X5. I hope they will do them when new X5 comes. I and some other professional drivers showed that GOOD driver can do better and faster WITHOUT electronics then computer. I'm a former rally driver, so I have some experience how to drive the vehicle in extreme situation without any electronics and hydraulics.
 
I don't disagree with anything you have said. I am pretty easy on the throttle, and when the roads are slick, I am even more cautious. Therefore, I have never had trouble with the VSC kicking in when I didn't want it to, but I have only had the vehicle for 2 months.

I understand the complaints with the VSC, and I am sure that eventually I will need to accelerate in a hurry, the VSC and/or ATRAC will kill my power, and then I will feel the same as you do.

This means that both of us talking on a same "language". Probably we just have different experience and priorities.
For advanced users like me VSC may be pain in one place in some applications.
 
I do agree that the VSC is nice sometimes, expecially on the interstate when you hit some ice. My last suv was a '97 Passport, and I loved driving it in the snow. It was a basic 4wd. I could slide a little around the corner, or not depending on what I wanted. I just wish there was a way you could turn it off and have a little more fun. There is no doubt it helps. Half the fun of the snow is being able to play around in it.

But back to the original posters question can you shut down the VSC on a 4Runner??
 
Ok, I am curious to know if my VCS is even working? I have done the pedal to the floor with the wheel cranked and all I get is a bunch of brake action. I never lose power but I can feel and hear the brakes kicking in to stop wheel spin. I drive a v8.

Try to do it in 90degr. turn. VCS is very noticeable when your steering wheel is off the central position, it has steering sensor. You should also see
 
Let's not forget that the affects of the VSC kicking in are exacerbated by the dunflops... Many have switched to better tires and the VSC is not as much of a problem.

I have hit the same situation Alexjet, only I need to make a quick left turn to get into traffic that will not let people in. Had someone slam on their brakes because my VSC wouldn't let me accelerate once I was in the lane. I looked at it this way... The dunflops couldn't get enough grip to get me started on a slick roadway, so VSC acted appropriately in maintaining control, but I think the system is a little slow in returning control to the driver... Usually in the rain or on slick roads, I am in 4WD now anyway and I don't see the same problems.
