Trying to find a certain wire so I can hook up my fog lights

Hi guys, I am going to be wiring a set of fog lights for my 4runner (Lightforce 170 Strikers) and I would like to have them come on in a 2 step process. I need to locate a certain wire though.

For the aftermarket fog lights to come on they will be on their own switch, which I want to be energized by the high beam circuit.

If the switch is on and I turn on my high beams, they will come on. Once the Lightforces are on, and I turn off my high beams, they will turn off.

So I need to find a wire that will be energized (+12vdc) when the lights are on. I will use a relay of course for the rest of the circuit.

Does anybody know where I can find such a wire, and where it would be located?

OK presuming you are using the switch to energize the relay & the relay is going to be under the hood (near the battery or fuse box?) you'll have to run a wire through the firewall to it from your switch. The quick & dirty was would be to add a fuse tap to a fused side of one of the highbeam fuses in the fuse box and run this back into the passenger compartment to the switch. You could use a two lead wire (ie: lamp cord or similar) & it would be no more work to run than 1 wire; one from fuse to switch & then from switch back to relay.

OR, you could tap one of the high beam wires in the pass. compartment. Probably the easiest location would be the drivers kick panel. Remove that & locate conector "IC4". Its the large connector (I think its blue in my 2005) that uses a bolt in the center to connect it. It is roughly square with rounded corners. It is basically four connectors grafted together. You need connector "A", one of the side connectors with a total of 17 possible connections (some are unused so there won't nessesarily be 17 wires. You need to tap #4 or #5 (red with green stripe or red with white strip respectively). They are next to each other. From the top there is a single connector (#1) and then rows of 2 connectors. So it goes: #1 then #2 & #3 below, then #4 & #5 below that.... Just confirm with a METER (preferred over test light) that these have 12V dc when high beams are on and there you go.

That lists all the connectors, their locations, their layouts, what they look like, and the wiring colors for 2003 (so far everything I have seen is the same for my 2005 - I think there were changes for 2006) but I'm not sure how to list the link. That's exactly what I was looking for. I know I will end up running 1 or 2 wires through the firewall for the switch, which will be going to a relay under the hood.

I have all the circuit diagrams printed out that I need, I just wasn't sure on the location of the connector I needed to find. I know there is one connector in the steering column that may have a wire that switches on and off with the high beams , I just didn't know where the other one is located. So if you say it's in the drivers side kick panel, thats perfect. Nice and close to the firewall, and a good spot to mount a switch (there are a couple blank spots there that can be used)

Is there any places that sell non-momentary (latching on/off) switches that are a direct fit in those blank switch locations? The wire clip would be needed as well.

You can get Toyota factory switches that fit there. I have one from Ebay for $20 (seller had several & should still be listed). These are for the Tacoma. Would have to buy connector seperate.

The other option is FJ crusier switches. These had a light when the switch is one. These are more expensive ($60 + - with connectors?) but either Toyota switch looks the cleanest. There are also a couple different options with e FJ switches (symbols show fog lights or roof lights - just different picture).

I have / am adding several switches & this is the route I'm going. There are other switches that will fit but I don't think they look as clean - "factory".

I can't seem to find any on eBay right now. Lots of switches for 02 and older, but nothing for our gen.

I know about the FJ switch that is lighted with the harness, but I don't need anything that fancy. (I cant remember the link right now) Just any Toyota on/off switch with the harness will do.

Link? I'd like to get a full shop manual, if it's available, but the wiring diagram would be very helpful.
