Tundra Brakes Upgrade - is this kit compatible?

I'm planning to do the TBU on my '99 SR5 with 16" rims. Is this kit compatible? I wanted to buy off eBay since they have 15% today :becky:

Yes, that is the most common kit that people use. Callahan owns PowerStop, it's the same company.

Not all 4Runner rims are compatible with the TBU. If you have the "split-spoke" wheels they will not clear the bigger caliper:

Have you checked out the TBU thread and list of rims and if those are ok?

Worst case scenario you can just take a grinder and file down the high points to get them to clear. I did that with my first set of rims and if you do it carefully it doesn't throw the wheels out of balance.

My understanding, perhaps incorrect, was that this issue was more common with the 231 and not the 199 calipers? I was thinking of going the 199 route for that reason.

Depends on how much needs to be removed. You run the risk of rupturing a fluid passageway and draining your brake fluid if you grind too much off a caliper. It's been done.

ABS malfunctions? My ABS only kicked in twice before the TBU, it never does now since it applies more stopping force with less pedal.

Thanks, that's somewhat reassuring. Knowing me though, I'll be one of the few who does end up with the ABS issue . Also, I have the 3-spoke split rims, so I am hesitant to buy the 231's knowing that I'll have to grind (not liking that option) or get new wheels.

I had the abs issue before the brake kit. I only had it happen maybe twice a year at very low speed. Installed the 231's earlier this year and haven't had it happen yet. So far, I'm saying the opposite. Bigger brakes fixed mine, lol. Just jinxed it for sure.

I've had my 99 3RZ for 19 years & never had an issue with the ABS before or after the 231mm.

I think the ABS issues are on '96-'98. IIRC, the 231mm exacerbates the issues, while the 199mm stays the same.

I think the ABS system was redesigned for '99+.

I think it might just be a few isolated cases. Very few people who own a 4Runner have actually done the TBU in relation to all the 4Runners on the road.

I have no data to back this up, but it seems to me that those who do either do heavy offroading (read ABS wire/axle damage) or have modified their wheel size. There's always the fluke electrical gremlins though like the traction ECU going bad.

It sort of makes sense that there could be issues with the 231mm calipers. They have larger pistons with larger surface areas. That means more force exerted or relieved on the pads/rotors for the same fluid pressure increase or decrease. The system is probably tuned for the swept area of the 199mm caliper pistons. In theory the control system should probably be able to still make the ABS work properly with the larger caliper pistons, but I didn't want to mess with it.

Your car and mine are almost identical twins. I’m going to be doing th same brake upgrade with the 199mm calipers. Do you feel a significant difference after the upgrade? One of my calipers is grabbing so it’s time to get to work on the upgrade. Also, what kit did you get on eBay, and are you happy with it? Thanks!
