I think the ABS issues are on '96-'98. IIRC, the 231mm exacerbates the issues, while the 199mm stays the same.

I think the ABS system was redesigned for '99+.

All ABS parts for 1996 to 2000 are the same. The introduction of VSC in 2001 required a completely different ABS system.

Also, I recommend the Callahan calipers, but not rotors and pads. I already warped them. I've been running Brembo blanks with Axxis Semi-metallic pads for longer in another 4Runner and they stop beautifully.

So you’re not seeing a problem running the 231mm upgrade? I have a 2001 and was wondering if this would be a problem. I also have the 5-star 16” wheel, do you know if these wheels will clear the calipers? Thanks!

Well then my '99 has the 'original' ABS system (pre-redesign), and I have 231mm calipers with no problems. Of course, I also live in Houston with really no snow or ice to speak of, so my experience may be biased.

Do you mind if I ask what wheels you have and what size? I'm interested in doing the 231 upgrade but nervous that they won't fit with my wheels.

I have the stock Limited aluminum 5 Stars. The ones on the Limited are 16", and fit fine, no spacers or grinding needed.

I think there are some 15" steel 5 stars, but those came with the Base or SR5. These do require grinding or spacers, as do all 15" wheels used on the 231mm.

There's a picture list floating around somewhere that shows which stock Toyota wheels will fit which calipers, but you'll have to Google for it.

Sorry, I wasn't specific enough. I run the 199mm. Your 5-star's will clear the 231's. I'm running split spokes so I had to go with 199mm's. I have no experience with the 01-02 ABS system other than with stock brakes, but I haven't heard nightmares.

I have a 2002 (in the 2001-2002 family things regarding ABS/brakes) and I've been good. I've been running my TBU for over 3 years now.

I have OEM sequoia calipers with EBC rotors and EBC green stuff pads.. My only gripe is how much brake dust the Green Stuff pads throw out. way too much. I will got all OEM rotors and pads for my 2nd 4runner (it's a 2000).

I'm also running Sequoia 231 on 16" 5 star rims. The steel spare will hit/grind the 231 calipers if you have a flat an run the spare. So I got another 16" 5 star to replace my steel spare tire.
My experience with the 231 is it is a little more touchy than stock, with the abs kicking in on wet roads. It stops like a boss on dry roads.

Thank you all for the replies. I just ordered the stuff to do this, so I could be tackling this over next weekend. I guess I’m looking at picking up a 5star wheel down the road at some point.
