Turbo 3RZ 98 4Runner Questions

Hey guys new to the page here and have some quick questions that yall should be able to answer. I currently have a 98 Toyota 2wd 4runner with a auto tranny and 2.7l 4 cyl 3rz. I drive it as a daily driver to work and back and am getting around 21mpg. Im allways setting up and building diesel engines for our tractor and trucks around the farm with turbos ect. for performance upgrades and was on here the otherday and found that alot of people were turboing the 4 runners 4,5 and 6 cyl. Im very capaible of setting up the turbo like the exhaulst intake intercooler ect. as iv done serveral times b4 and have lots of spare parts. My intentions are to make a neet turbo setup that will help my mpg's and little in power, Kind of like the new eco boost f150
My question is about the fuel and tunning side of it, Iv never turboed a gas engine and am curious if you can just set up the turbo and the map sensor compensate for the boost or will I need custom tuning ect. Any info will help. Thanks

Clownmeat??? And another question that I just had. Wonder about a vacuum for the motor.will I have to hook up a vacuum pump???

Maybe up to 5psi boost....you are way better off to put a haltech sprint 500 in and go stand alone. 3rz's will make 3-400rwhp on stock internals. I was going to turbo the one I have in my race truck, but I needed 5-600rwhp so I opted to go 2JZ.

Ok I have found ''Clownmeat'' Build page and all he did to his turbo build is run High oct fuel and colder sparkplugs and thats it with 7psi of boost and it seems to be running pretty good. Im thinking about the t3/t4 hybrid with a manifold mount, or should I run a
T25? Could someone message clownmeat or something to get some of his input.
And Im new to the Toyota lango, Im use to the Powerstroke forums. What is the Haltech sprint 500??? and what do you mean go stand alone???

Add that and remove the toyota ECU all together. Find a good person to dyno tune....and enjoy.

T25 is too small. I run a tdo6 17c off of a gmc typhoon/cyclone (4.3L) on my 2rz (Tacoma). Using 450cc injectors, (lotsa guys use the supra 440's), and a safc2 for some fuel control. Ran 9 psi for 5 years.

Now I'm at 15psi with some meth, did hg and studs all on a stock engine. The 2rz/3rz are awesome motors.

Yes sir they are. I have never been a big toyota fan till I bought this 4r off my parents for 1000$ and after 360k Miles my girlfriend fliping it and me driving it everyday all Iv ever had to replace on it as far as hard parts is rear axle shaft bearings, seal and a O ring were the oil filter housing bolts to the block and a alternator. And after all that It still runs good enough that i feel comfortable putting a turbo on it and it holding up. There bomb proof. lol
Wish it was in better shap as far as the body goes but the interior is still mint. Hoping that i can put this turbo on it for around 350+ and gain 5-8 mpg and maybe a tad more power going up hills and such. Also it would be neet to set up and show all my friends. Conversation starter.
Flatboy, did you do all the work on your truck yourself? Did you convert a natural as. motor to a forced ind. Im having a lil trouble with the vacuum and boost. On diesels they use a vacuum pump powered by the fan belt for the brakes and such, Will i have to re run all the vacuum lines to a pump for a gas engine being converted over to forced air.

If I were you I'd spend some time on customtacos reading build threads, theirs lots of them.

You won't need any pump.

500-600? man i hate to tell you but you just wasted a lot of $ on the 2Jz LOL

you can run pink top injectors stock with 8psi max without any tuning but i would add a FMIC to keep from detonation.

$600 motor, $2-3000 in turbo related goodies....seems like a bargain to me. :becky:

not bad but still cheaper the RZ route.
we made 550whp on stock cams and now at 796whp all on a 2rz. :boxer:

That's badass. I know it can be done. But I need reliability for short course racing. A strung out RZ won't survive. A mellow JZ will. :thumb:

i would have to disagree with you there bud. our 2RZ has over 125+ track passes with 3 years on it on the same build. running strong at 33psi and has seen as much as 60psi. if built right and tuned right it will last

That's impressive, but still nothing compared to short course. You are running for mere seconds at a time, I need to run for around 20 minutes a race, 3 times a race day. Sometimes the rad gets covered with mud, temps get up to 240, and its just overall not nice on motors.

But PM me some info....I was going to turbo my 3rz but didn't think it was possible to get enough reliability.
